ALFRED HITCHCOCK, AUGUST 13, 1899 - APRIL 29,1980

I doubt if there is anyone reading this who has not heard of Alfred Hitchcock.  Later this month on April 29, 2013 it will be thirty-three years since the master of movie and television suspense died at age 80.

Hitchcock was born in London, England in 1899 and by 1920 had developed an interest in the film business through his skill as an accomplished artist.  During the 1920s he met his future wife and collaborator Alma Reville.  They were married in 1927 and became the parents of daughter Pat who was born in July of 1928.

The year 1927 was a big one for Hitchcock as he not only got married but he directed his first film, The Lodger.

In the UK throughout the 1930’s until 1939, Hitch churned out many films with the best ones, in my opinion, being the original The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) with Peter Lorre, The 39 Steps (1935), and a personal favorite, The Lady Vanishes (1938).  After Jamaica Inn in 1939, he moved to America where he would gain his biggest fame.

His first film after arriving in the U. S. was Rebecca which won the Oscar for best picture of 1940.  He went on to do such favorites over the years as Strangers on a Train (1951), Rear Window, (1954), Vertigo (1958), Psycho (1960), and The Birds (1963).   His 67 directorial credits also include his half hour TV show which ran from 1955-1961, Alfred Hitchcock Presents.  That Sunday night show produced many memorable programs.  He also did The Alfred Hitchcock Hour in 1962.

The above gives you a quick resume of Alfred Hitchcock’s life and major accomplishments in the UK and America but what kind of a guy was he and why were most of his works successful?

As a follower of vintage film productions, I was rarely bored with a Hitchcock film.  That’s not to say I liked them all.  I never could get into Torn Curtain (1966) even though I was drawn to see it because of the Hitchcock touch and that it starred Paul Newman and Julie Andrews.  Another clunker to me was probably one of his most successful films, The Birds (1963).

The fun things about Hitchcock’s films were his ability to create suspense and a feeling of anxiety that kept the viewers on the edge of their seats through various twists and turns.  He liked icy female characters, preferably blondes, to inhabit his films (Eva Marie Saint, Kim Novak, Tippi Hedren, Priscilla Lane, Janet Leigh, etc.).  He also liked the excitement of someone being on the run like Cary Grant in North by Northwest (1959), Robert Cummings in Saboteur (1942), or Robert Donat in The 39 Steps (1935), etc.

He also always had a plot device that made the whole thing work referred to as the “Macguffin.”  Combined with the music scores of Bernard Herrmann for many of the films, it made for an enjoyable couple hours.

Hitchcock also liked to tease his audiences with his cameo appearances.  Here is all of them.  Some I remember, some I don't.  I think the best is the one with his picture in the newspaper in Lifeboat (1944) advertising a weight reduction product.  Watch carefully for it.

I wish we had more Alfred Hitchcocks in Hollywood today.

(((Reduco)))

My fav Hitchcock films were Psycho and the Birds.

And yes, I do remember watching his TV show as a kid, he was able to create enormous suspense and drama w/o having a bunch of Freddy Krueger, chain sawing blood and guts, or cars crashing and exploding, or buildings being blown up, etc....like they seem to need these days

midnightsstaff said...

Alfred was a pretty shrewd observer of human nature, like a lot of greats including Shakespeare or Orson Wells.

He knew the value of suspense and played the audience like a Strad.

Rod Sterling was another of the same mindset, he knew that humans have a natural emotional rhythm.
Alfred was a master.

But you have to realize that he was also lucky enough to live in the golden age of serious film making, I doubt he could work in the current Hollywood environment.
..or maybe I'm just too cynical.

" thank you very much for asking"

OK, whomever "asked" needs to star as the victim in the next Hitchcock film.

For some reason I always liked ‘the Birds’ even though a wooden Indian (did I cruise past the PC barrier?) had more acting skills than Tippi Hedren. Rod Taylor was a hunk. Psycho, of course, is a classic. I heard that Janet Leigh never took a shower after making that movie. Personally, I think that’s plain silly. Anthony Perkins personal torments came out and added to his portrayal of Norman.

I watched the AH hour on TV all the time. One episode that stands out was called “The Jar,” and starred Pat Buttram (Mr. Haney) and Collin Wilcox as his young cheating wife, Thedy Sue Hill. Her name played a prominent part in the denouement. The other episode dealt with a convict who enticed the prison funeral director to help him escape. Didn’t quite work out as he had planned …

Those were the TV series and movies and days when character played an integral part in the story and not CGI and guns and screaming action. Classics. I’m glad at least they have been transferred to DVD so we oldies but goodies can still see the quality with which we grew up.

Guys, Hope this isn't too far off topic, does sorta tie to entertainment?

As stated last blog, I was in Florida. While there we went to see The Blue Man Group, an act I never thought I would want to see. Turns out, I was wrong, they were fantastic, and all are very accomplished percussionists....

For anyone who wondered this act could survive for decades w/o ever speaking a single word...Here's 3 guys bringing the house down banging on a couple pieces of poop-pipe:

Proud,

Very good. It was an ad for Reduco which sounds like something that would have been promoted in the early 1940s.

Now, can you tell me the name of the actor holding the newspaper? He was well known on TV in the early 50s.

Jim McAllister said...

Middy,

True, I don't think Hitch would be that popular today if the garbage previews of new movies are any indication of what is showing now.

It seems that if "Fu-k" is said repeatedly, there is a screwing scene along with a scene with cars crashing and burning, you have the formula for today. Now, the audience is as stupid as the film so it's a perfect fit.

Can you imagine Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman doing a scene from "Notorious" today? The audience would walk out yawning. They just wouldn't get it.

Jim McAllister said...

Rick,

Hitchcock was one of the best. Luckily, we still have TCM so we can see his work.

Jim McAllister said...

Glo,

I never could get into The Birds.

You're right, Tippi was no great actress and seeing her take that motor boat over to Rod's house was comical with her in her little suit.

I like the scene at the schoolhouse between her and Suzanne Pleschette where they light up their cigs at the front door of the school.

Unless I missed some subconscious connection to a mystery, the story just seemed a bit week.

I've heard that about Janet too and you're right; it seems very silly. "Psycho" had a great cast which really helped it. I love the cene in the office where Frank Albertson is hitting on Janet and Pat Hitchcock says, "I guess he saw my wedding ring." Keep dreaming, Pat!

She was really good in "Strangers on a Train" from 1951. "Psycho" was her final film.

Collin Wilcox (Horne, later) was good in those roles. I remember her well in "To Kill a Mockingbird." Same type role.

Here's a trivia: Who starred in the first episode of "AH Presents"?
Hint if you need it: He was in Hitchcock films in the 40s.

Jim McAllister said...

Proud,

You're right. I've seen those guys. They are good!

The only Hitchkock movie I ever watched was the Birds. I tried watching some of his other movies but never could get into that suspense thing. I guess that's why I never watched the Twilight Zone shows.

Well I suppose this is to be expected when the topic is on a foreigner, someone who died 33 years ago at 80, and most people in modern America have no idea who you are talking about in the first place.
It's a hotdog, beer and NASCAR crowd Jim- and that particular crowd isn't all that curious.

I doubt anyone here but you and Glo watch TMC and know that "a Streetcar named Desire" was not actually about homeless gay sex in the back of the Phoenix light rail-
..that's the HBO remake.

Rush once quipped "the average person's sense of history begins when they are born"
..that explains the fascination with Che Guevara, Karl Marx and Jimmy Carter to the school age voters I guess.

A classical liberal education like we were exposed to used to represent opening the mind to a wide range of enlightenment, now the meaning has regressed to "study for the test" and forced indoctrination.

Mike,

You need to watch "A Stop at Willoughby" from 1960 originally shown on "Twilight Zone."

Not complicated suspense; just a guy under stress trying to get away from it all. Very inspiring and a place many of us dream about on occasion.

25 minutes long:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0734550/

Jim McAllister said...

Middy,

I remember an occasion when I was talking to a 21 year old secretary at one of my accounts in the 1980s and I asked her what she thought of some incident in the 1950s and her response was "How should I know?; I'm only 21!"

Being a History major it shocked me because she assumed there was no point in knowing anything about a period of time that did not include her lifespan.

That's the youth we have today; nothing has changed. They never heard of the Depression, WWII, Korea, Eisenhower, or anything else of historical significance. Their only concern is having beer money for the weekend and the latest news about Jay Z and Beyonce.

I think that mentality is what led us to this presidency we now have to endure.

I love your line:

I doubt anyone here but you and Glo watch TMC and know that "a Streetcar named Desire" was not actually about homeless gay sex in the back of the Phoenix light rail-
..that's the HBO remake.

Very appropriate!

Nah, I'm gonna vote for Obama!

The reason is very simple and I'll explain.

The Bible says, "For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, 'You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.'"

Now Romney's way of helping the poor will be to kill them. It's not a bad plan if it's done quickly, but the rich like to kill people, so they'll starve them and that takes a long time.

Obama is a peacemaker. But you know how those guys are. Peacemakers get people killed. Efficiently.

What it comes down to, is who would the American people rather go to war against? Romney or Obama? Well, Obama of course.

That's why I'm going to vote for him. Both Romney and Obama will get people dead. Fact. It just hasn't happened yet.

I have no kids and no wife. It doesn't matter to me if people are all Muslims in the future. I won't be here. Not my problem.

She is willing to forsake her riches and live with you in your double-wide hovel. She,(as well as the rest of FM) wants to record her(their) next album in your storage shed(er, um, I mean, "music studio").

All she asks in return is that you never post on Jim's blog, and stop using the internet completely.

I think you, in spite of obvious mental short comings, can see that this is your chance of a lifetime.

If I were you I would get rid of all computers and cancel your IP contract at dawns early light before your dream girl changes her mind.

The choice is yours, continue making a complete, insane, stalking, delusional, dirt poor, fool of yourself? Or, live the rest of your days, blissfully waking up laying between to Rhiannon and the clay jar?

Maybe you know him?

Yeah this guy has zero respect for the law, always seems to be making insulting, untrue remarks about posters sexual orientation, or falsely claiming to have had sex with a poster he doesn't like's spouses, in general, just losing his temper and shooting off his big mouth w/o bothering to think through, resulting in his constantly publicly slandering people's character w/o the slightest bit of proof to back up his charge.

I know, what with you bein so civic minded and all, that you'd want to make sure guys like this get reported to the proper authorities, so I'll join you in your latest tattle-tale venture.

If not the DOJ?, maybe local authorities in Richland would be better?

Thanks for your help, till now, I've been ignoring this bully, but, thanks to you, I now realize, the law is the law!

*I have no clout, never claimed to

*Never published your address, but it is for sale,(you told us) and therefore a matter of public record
*Don't know a ron long
*Don't know a kevin lee either.
*Never heard of the starck club
*Don't know a thing about ms nicks finances, don't care to.
*Never said I hated ms nicks, never even said I disliked her.
See, most everything you posted is not real, it's stuff you imagined or made up. Where / how you came up with all the stuff is beyond me, the even bigger question is why? you do it?

I did get a real laugh out of one part,(well I find almost everything RK pretty darn funny), no one has done more in terms of "stepping up and doing the right thing", than this blog. For years almost everyone has told, even begged you to "get some help".

BTW, Last I checked Eric Holder doesn't work at the FBI, obviously the fictional story line of your delusion is too complicated for even you.

Gotta go, Fleetwood Mac is taking me for an early bird dinner at Denny's, normally I wouldn't go, what with all the work to be done on the music studio, but what the heck, this might be my last supper once you use your clout with the FBI and DOJ (ahahahahaha)

Of course accusing someone of conspiracy to commit murder is pretty much what you are actually doing yourself..
it's rooted in your bad liberal habit of projecting..

Well Kepple you just formally accused Jim in print of organizing a conspiracy to commit murder.
That crosses the line and is a felony in it's self- it also leaves you liable for civil action in the process- aren't we supposed to say something if we see something?

You are an ignorant and dangerous fool and probably should be locked up for your own protection as well as safeguarding the public.
Allowing you the possession of any firearm is much the same as handing a four year old a loaded 357 and sending him into the back yard to play.

.."Jimmy, you and your friends had me confused enough to take my own life and I've got the evidence to prove it. Just a couple more years and the statute of limitations kicks in, huh?"

Hey Rick, don't depend on any statute of limitation's when it comes to organizing criminal acts involving a plot to commit murder.

Entertaining suicidal thoughts in print will get one's firearms yanked out of their hands muy pronto you polyp, they are real sensitive about that sort of thing right now.

..well I have tried every approach until I am blue in the face so I guess I am officially off the blog as long as this dog is allowed/encouraged to slander honest people and shit on the property in doing so.

By The way Rick, you won't be able to do time in a men's prison, the white boys aren't going to have anything to do with you once you start this type of nonsense, so you had better dial in on the religious aspect and do a lot of praying, just like the Chester's and child murders do..

Yards flush 51/50's like you every day, you might not even make it through classification at the reception center- much less walk any prison yard.

You just implied, making a overt and direct threat with reference to the Kennedy assassination conspiracy warning us all that you are now intending to stalk all of us with a high powered rifle

It's not hard to imagine their joy if only now they had some rice to cook in them.

Rick, I know you've have been asked repeatedly to limit your ramblings to three (3) posts per day.

You had eleven yesterday, and here you go again with five so far and the day's only half gone.

Obviously you never learned to count?, or,

You have no regard for the rules? or

You're here for the sole purpose of disrupting the conversation and could give a shyt about anyone but your crazy self.

I'm kinda wondering, since no one here can stand you, since most ignore you until your posts become so ignorant or obnoxious that they could strip paint, and the only interaction you get is in the form of insult or the occasional obligatory nicety from the moderator, why are you here?

(of course, I should point out that writing a babbling, drug induced, nonsensical, stevie-laden response will place your total even further above the limit)

Did you notice that Jan Brewer nixed the bill giving the customer a lot of options in the medical industry including mandating that hospital charges are posted before the fact?
The only explanation I can think of is she is on the donor list from Big Hospital and serves them instead of us.

By Mary K. Reinhart azcentral.com Fri Apr 12, 2013 10:43 PM
{Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed legislation Friday that would have required doctors, hospitals and other health-care providers to post prices for their most common services, a move the bill’s sponsor said was a blow to consumers and driven by industry pressure.
In her veto letter, the governor said the measure’s “ambiguous terms and definitions” could conflict with state and federal laws and expose the state to lawsuits.

“I support price and quality of care transparency in the health care sector, which will provide useful information to help patients manage their health care needs,” Brewer said. “I am concerned about the practical and potential legal implications of this bill.”

Sen. Nancy Barto, R-Phoenix, dismissed the governor’s explanations as “red herrings” and accused her of bowing to pressure from the hospital industry, which opposed Senate Bill 1115.
“I think it shows who she’s listening to in this whole health-care debate,” Barto said. “She’s not on the side of consumers.”}

Politics lately is like continuing to kiss frogs in hopes that eventually you might get lucky.
..and it's is not working.

There was ricin found too. Remember when I did the research on how much Castor Beans it would take to make ricin and it was handed off to the feds. They didn't know either, but they did appreciate the insight.

I analyzed both the ricin and that pressure cooker bomb as possibly the work of one group. Add the gunpowder and I fear it is the work of domestic terrorists. Possibly a Christian group, but probably anarchists. Libertarians would do it too.

You see, you can buy castor beans in bulk if you're a farmer and no one will care. What if that farmer is a chemist? Or working with a chemist ... who hates Americans.

It's either educated Taliban or homegrown terrorists of Afghanistan war veterans.

But why Boston and why the marathon? CNN said that the Elite run in those games.

Ricin. As it turns out, it takes a lot of castor beans to make a tiny bit of ricin. No, I don't know anything about chemicals. I'm told items in the kitchen can be made into a bomb, but I avoid thoughts like that.

I'm a new me. A thoughtful me. Like one rock star on Facebook said to me, not very nicely, I say "sorry," too much. It's an Aspergers thing.

Since I wisely chose to remain anonymous years ago, I won't bill you for the expert opinion.

Dora used to tell me to keep it short. It wasn't the doctors who recognized my disorder first, it was Dora. She diagnosed the sleep apnea and everything.

Short:

Gunpowder, probably blackpowder. Bye bye powder in bulk for reloading and blackpowder weapons.

The pressure cookers are tricky. The Chinese have used them for bombs. The Taliban use them. I would guess that American soldiers, in EOD, know how to make them. That's actually a pretty small list of suspects.

I looked on Youtube and there are no directions of how to make a pressure cooker bomb.

I looked at the videos and there's a guy crouching facing the blast like he's photographing it and he didn't even flinch. Everyone else moved, but him.

As far as Bozo the Clown, he is still the complete ass he has always been as you can tell from his comments on the Politics blog.

He is ruining that blog like he did azcentral. He posts too much and what he posts is stupid but he is quick to criticize others. It's not that I mind as I love to put him in his place as I did on my last entry there but it gets to be a nuisance after a while.

The proof is in the pudding as I am averaging more than twice the hits he gets.

He is only satisfied when he gets to be the leader and I have been waxing his ass on the blogs since 2007. It kills him but he doesn't improve; he chooses to try to discredit me instead. The work of a true loser.

He must pay that woman to live with him (assuming she is still there) because he is very abusive to women. I heard that his ex-wife had a restraining order on him and he had quite a rap sheet in AZ and Scottsdale.

"The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first military engagements of the American Revolutionary War. They were fought on April 19, 1775, in Middlesex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay, within the towns of Lexington, Concord, Lincoln, Menotomy (present-day Arlington), and Cambridge, near Boston."

.."Liberty and democracy are eternal enemies, and every one knows it who has ever given any sober reflection to the matter.
A democratic state may profess to venerate the name, and even pass laws making it officially sacred, but it simply cannot tolerate the thing.
In order to keep any coherence in the governmental process, to prevent the wildest anarchy in thought and act, the government must put limits upon the free play of opinion.
In part, it can reach that end by mere propaganda, by the bald force of its authority — that is, by making certain doctrines officially infamous.

But in part it must resort to force, i.e., to law. One of the main purposes of laws in a democratic society is to put burdens upon intelligence and reduce it to impotence.
Ostensibly, their aim is to penalize anti-social acts; actually their aim is to penalize heretical opinions.

At least ninety-five Americans out of every 100 believe that this process is honest and even laudable; it is practically impossible to convince them that there is anything evil in it. In other words, they cannot grasp the concept of liberty."
- H.L.Mencken.

Can you imagine the strategy they are going to use when it comes time to clamp down on free thought?.
One good thing to come of this instance today in Boston was we saw how totally inept the Federal response to any actual emergency other than just bullying the public around they really are.
Imagine if this had been a coordinated attack with simultaneous guerrilla teams all along the eastern seaboard.
It was in effect martial law introduced as a component to the new normal..

PROUD said...

Middy...I must have missed the command to applaud???? looked to me like Americans gladly thanking law enforcement for quickly getting someone capable of blowing them and their families into tiny bits....

I don't believe there was any martial law ordered, everything I saw and read indicated that the Gov or Mayor "urged" or "recommended" people stay indoors and business' stay closed...and that was just in a 20+ block radius of a known terror threat...

Guess I'm just not in a cranky enough mood?

midnightsstaff said...

So what's the problem?
two people can have different views of the same issue without becoming mortal enemies, I guess I am just a bit hypersensitive over the loss of individual rights and sense this was a move to further establish the Federal Police state that I see coming.

We Libertarian minded folk seem to view life differently than a lot of other good people.

Chalk it up to my being witness and working in an end product environment that has the ability and the force of law necessary to deny nearly all individual rights in response to a crisis, perceived or real.

What I see today is an America willing to give up yet another degree of liberty for an illusion of security..

Would you feel better if no one raised my concerns?

I told you that Libertarians have problems with both liberal and conservative viewpoints occasionally.

You are right, they were not forced to stand in the rain, they did it willingly and that scares people like me more than you can imagine- they have been conditioned.

.."What the common man longs for in this world, before and above all his other longings, is the simplest and most ignominious sort of peace:

..the peace of a trusty in a well-managed penitentiary.
He is willing to sacrifice everything else to it.
He puts it above his dignity and he puts it above his pride.
Above all, he puts it above his liberty.
The fact, perhaps, explains his veneration for policemen, in all the forms they take–his belief that there is a mysterious sanctity in law, however absurd it may be in fact."

- I didn't write it, H.L.Mencken wrote it decades ago- truths are both universal and timeless, red vs. blue politics simply do not work.

..see the difference between you and me and Rick and me is we can discuss issues without getting personal or overly emotional- we just see things a bit different and can discuss issues without becoming hostile to one another like the PTB would prefer.

midnightsstaff said...

.."In light of the fact that authorities are still searching for Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, both the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Bruins have postponed their games against the Kansas City Royals and the Pittsburgh Penguins, respectively.

It would have been the Red Sox first game at Fenway Park since Monday afternoon. Their Patriots Day game against the Tampa Bay Rays which began at 11:05 a.m. concluded shortly before the bombings took place. The team then travelled to Cleveland for a three game series against the Indians before returning to Boston last night.

As for the Bruins, it is the second time this week they have postponed a game. Their Monday night game against the Ottawa Senators was called off. They were, however, able to host an emotional game against the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night".

I feel safer just knowing the Red Sox were not playing Friday. lol.

Hey Middy, I take no offense at differing opinions, and I have more than my share of cynical bones,(though most have been broken or cracked over the past couple years), I welcome good give and take on any issue.

The bombing, on Boston's Patriots / Marathon day was quite a kick in the stomach to the town,(which from the times I've been there, is very PROUD), I thought the city handled it well, and love the fact that young people weren't holed up in their house, or some bar, but standing in a cold drizzle, thanking the police, and chanting U~S~A....U~S~A.

In my view, we need a lot more of that! Seems like the norm these days would be to blame the cops, fault the system, and make this terrorist out as some kind of unsung hero or victim....

well, my cpr training kicked in this morning- ya never know what life holds.
I happened on a fresh motorcycle accident with the poor guy laying in the middle of the road.

My natural instincts are to check to make sure I sure I don't know anyone in it and speed up I got tied up for nearly two hours once watching over a dead guy on the way to Mammoth..

Pierre, I think that was his name, didn't need cpr and was awake and responding, but the real danger is letting someone drop off and lose b p by going into shock, so I got off by only asking questions to snap him out of himself and making sure he kept his head elevated, I gave him a brief injury assessment and keeping him talking until the paramedics could show up..

I talked to a fellow marine, trying to keep him conscious outside of Dodge City when he got his leg blown off by a rigged 105 booby trap.
he should have made it by all rights he was talking when he got loaded but he died in the chopper heading for first med- going into shock is a stone dead bitch.

I still have my brother getting killed forty years ago on a Harley by some damn drunk in the corners of my mind I guess.

“To me, it’s words, not actions,” she said. “He’s using political speech to avoid doing what’s right.”

Jennifer Longdon said Flake should have drafted his own gun control bill if he didn’t find the Manchin-Toomey measure acceptable. Longdon, who relies on a wheelchair to get around after she was paralyzed in a Phoenix shooting, said Flake was “parsing words.”

Flake said he didn’t support the legislation because it would have affected some private gun transfers between friends and neighbors. The proposal fell short of the 60 votes needed to advance in the Senate. An attempt to ban assault-style rifles failed as well, along with a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines. Arizona’s other U.S. senator, Republican John McCain, supported the gun control overhaul.

“My position has been the same. I favor measures to strengthen our background checks, particularly as it regards people with mental illness,” Flake said. “Although the intent, I believe, was just to take care of commercial sales and not involve private sales, it went deep into private sales."

There will never be an effective way to control gun violence. There are too many nuts these days plus regardless of the laws, if a guy wants a gun to shoot up a public place he will simply buy one out of a car trunk in a back alley at midnight somewhere.

All this bullshit about background checks, registration, etc. are exactly that: BULLSHIT, and it doesn't matter how much little loudmouth twerps like Mark Kelly travel around enjoying his photo ops and interviews; there will still be gun violence.

In the case of Giffords, she was just too full of herself feeling that she was invincible because of her Tucson popularity. She found out quick how wrong she was; should have had more security. It only takes one person to dislike you.
