ALFRED HITCHCOCK, AUGUST 13, 1899 - APRIL 29,1980

I doubt if there is anyone reading this who has not heard of Alfred Hitchcock.  Later this month on April 29, 2013 it will be thirty-three years since the master of movie and television suspense died at age 80.

Hitchcock was born in London, England in 1899 and by 1920 had developed an interest in the film business through his skill as an accomplished artist.  During the 1920s he met his future wife and collaborator Alma Reville.  They were married in 1927 and became the parents of daughter Pat who was born in July of 1928.

The year 1927 was a big one for Hitchcock as he not only got married but he directed his first film, The Lodger.

In the UK throughout the 1930’s until 1939, Hitch churned out many films with the best ones, in my opinion, being the original The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) with Peter Lorre, The 39 Steps (1935), and a personal favorite, The Lady Vanishes (1938).  After Jamaica Inn in 1939, he moved to America where he would gain his biggest fame.

His first film after arriving in the U. S. was Rebecca which won the Oscar for best picture of 1940.  He went on to do such favorites over the years as Strangers on a Train (1951), Rear Window, (1954), Vertigo (1958), Psycho (1960), and The Birds (1963).   His 67 directorial credits also include his half hour TV show which ran from 1955-1961, Alfred Hitchcock Presents.  That Sunday night show produced many memorable programs.  He also did The Alfred Hitchcock Hour in 1962.

The above gives you a quick resume of Alfred Hitchcock’s life and major accomplishments in the UK and America but what kind of a guy was he and why were most of his works successful?

As a follower of vintage film productions, I was rarely bored with a Hitchcock film.  That’s not to say I liked them all.  I never could get into Torn Curtain (1966) even though I was drawn to see it because of the Hitchcock touch and that it starred Paul Newman and Julie Andrews.  Another clunker to me was probably one of his most successful films, The Birds (1963).

The fun things about Hitchcock’s films were his ability to create suspense and a feeling of anxiety that kept the viewers on the edge of their seats through various twists and turns.  He liked icy female characters, preferably blondes, to inhabit his films (Eva Marie Saint, Kim Novak, Tippi Hedren, Priscilla Lane, Janet Leigh, etc.).  He also liked the excitement of someone being on the run like Cary Grant in North by Northwest (1959), Robert Cummings in Saboteur (1942), or Robert Donat in The 39 Steps (1935), etc.

He also always had a plot device that made the whole thing work referred to as the “Macguffin.”  Combined with the music scores of Bernard Herrmann for many of the films, it made for an enjoyable couple hours.

Hitchcock also liked to tease his audiences with his cameo appearances.  Here is all of them.  Some I remember, some I don't.  I think the best is the one with his picture in the newspaper in Lifeboat (1944) advertising a weight reduction product.  Watch carefully for it.

I wish we had more Alfred Hitchcocks in Hollywood today.

By the way, I still believe that Mitt Romney was the perfect choice for a Depression laden nation.

Mitt has his shortcomings, but he is a decent and honorable man, I think it was such a striking contrast that any thinking person has to realize this nation has made a clear spiritual choice to listen and follow Satan.

The guy playing the one armed man was Bill Raisch. He was also in "Lonely Are the Brave" (1962. He's the one armed guy who beats the shit out of Kirk Douglas in the bar scene.

He also was with Douglas in "Spartacus" (1960) and "Seven Days in May" (1964).

Kirk must have liked him.

Interesting about Beck. Do you guys think he's really has something?

It seems too good to be true that we could get rid of the anointed one that easy.

Jim...looks like you got your D-Back's surprise mentioned above...They are in bridesmaid mode right now, losing,(though always "in" the game), games 1-2, but taking the get away game in extra innings. Must be one, maybe two ingredients still missing? But man, I really like them kicking some Yankee butt the other night....
Don't loose faith, they are, and always were a second half (season) / 11th inning kinda team, may still have an after the break surprise or two for we the true believers ????

Middy, somewhat familiar as well as in basic agreement with Thomas's book about lords casting 'we the minions' in their new world feudal system...

Praise be to thee. oh lord, 'O'

I think Beck and his bombastic style did the most to ruin his own brand. Wouldn't be at all surprised if he does in fact have something of significance, (lots of the wild stuff he's claimed has come to pass), unfortunately, because of his excessive, hyperbolic, showmanship, his credibility has been greatly compromised, so, even if his message is valid, no one will really listen, and those who do, will be afraid to admit it!....

Jim, I hope the Giffords Kelly dog and pony show is about over.

Kelly now says he's going to work to get Flake defeated in 5 1/2 years. Good luck with that.

Liberalism may work in Tucson but not the rest of the state.

Time for Giffords and Kelly to go back to Texas and leave us alone.

midnightsstaff said...

So what do you got against Texas?

I will respond in the A. M.

Thanks for the good input. Yes, I was talking to you guys; not Barb! LOL

Proud,

The D-backs need to get Eaton, Hill, back in the lineup and need more from Prado. Upton's hitting .300 in Atlanta and has 10 HRs.

That will even out though as he will eventually have a slump and Prado is a proven .300 hitter.

The starting pitching is not good enough though plus i don't trust Putz as a closer. Their best pitcher has been Cahill but they can't hit for him so he is 0-3 but with a decent era of 3.60

Luckily they are playing Parra a lot as they should have for years. All the guy does is hustle and hit and Goldschmidt looks good. Gregorius should be interesting at SS.

We shall see; that was a nice comeback yesterday.

Middy,

I remember the soaps when I was a kid. That's a good parody by Loman and Barkeley. Were they network? I don't remember them.

Mike,

I don't think Kelly-Giffords will ever go away. That little twerp isn't a fly boy anymore so he needs something to keep him busy I guess. He certainly is good at being a pain in the ass which make him the same as every other dumb ass liberal who comes down the pike.

I felt sorry for her at first but she is getting too much exposure and has become a pain just like Kelly.

I think the sympathy platform that Kelly and Giffords are majestically perched atop, ain't going anywhere soon....

The MSM will use them to tug at the heart-strings of every low information voter out there, at every available option. (and if there are no available options, they will manage tho invent or spin one up)

On a serious note: Obama, and the tax and spend even more Democrats are hastily pushing an internet tax bill.

Unfortunately, no matter what amount of new taxes are extracted from those who earned it....It will NEVER be enough to satisfy big spending governments insatiable appetite to spend money. No matter how much of YOUR money you give them....It WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH:

Time to do what we all know needs to be done when someone is ADDICTED to something: (as in spending money you don't have)

Just say "NO"!

Is that not the dumbest, most knee-jerk, yet oh so typical liberal reaction ever?

PROUD said...

Government now wants to tax internet sales, they want to increase income tax, gas tax, property tax, desperately looking for any / all new ways to suck even more money from people who earned it, so they can spend it on programs mostly designed to help themselves get re-elected.

Isn't it interesting how the one area politicians never consider taxing just happens to be, POLITICS aka, fund raising....Even though billions of dollars passed through their greedy lil hands last election cycle, yet they didn't propose to tax it....they didn't want to lose one dollar of THEIR money to the tax man. Funny huh?

midnightsstaff said...

"Is that not the dumbest, most knee-jerk, yet oh so typical liberal reaction ever?"

anything to avoid looking at the truth..
Yeah the libs have a default mode they resort to whenever the narrative wanders off the unicorn trail.
It's maddening because like children they refuse to objectively look at any issue without the lens liberal dogma and will in fact resist reason.

Just like cheering their oppressors who ignore the Constitution, banning the sales of pressure cookers makes perfect sense when you are living in a near Nirvana.

..if only these guys weren't muslims..

Jim McAllister said...

Proud,

There has to be a breaking point where the people who are footing the bills finally say "NO!" to the f--king a--hole in the Whir House..

Now he has the airports jammed up over his idiotic sequestration. He's like a little brat who must have his way. Even some Dems are breaking away saying that there are plenty of areas that could be cut without all this havoc at airports but the guy is a spoiled brat.

It's hard to believe that someone hasn't taken a shot at him.

OMIGOD!

I can't buy a pressure cooker in Boston anymore? "Knee jerk" doesn't even begin to explain this nonsense.

I remember my mom cooking with a pressure cooker in the early 50s. Kind of ironic that with all the technology available now that an old time pressure cooker was the villain.

We still use one all the time. Maybe I shouldn't say that; the government pressure cooker police will show up.

Hi Jim,
You've done a great job here. Yes I remember most of those Hitchcock films, even the not so well remembered very early ones.

And I fully agree with you, genius though he was, his product sometimes missed the mark.

However, I don't agree with you on "The Birds." Hitchcock had to have come up with that idea from Daphne Du Maurier’s (1907-1989) "The Birds", which was a semi - science fiction classic work, which was a well crafted warning of global warming.

In fact, it was even done in a half hour TV show: “Danger” in 1953. Unfortunately, I missed that one.

What Hitchcock left out was the reason the birds began to attack humans. Du Maurier’s story was complete, But Hitchcock, always wanting to add the mystery ending to leave us hanging, left it out.

Makes no difference to me, however, the man was great and always willing to take a chance. And let's face it, most of the time he won.

In fact, even when he failed – he won!

As Jim can tell you, I am no Obama fan or Liberal lover, but I disagree with you on the plight of Israel (which I refer to as 'Occupied Palestine).

The Israelis brought this problem upon themselves by stealing a country in 1948.

Note, the Arabs did not move next to them, they went out of their way to move next to the Arabs.

I agree with you, Jim. A perfect example is the film, “Mildred Pierce.”

Remember the scene where Zachary Scott kisses her passionately bon the rug in front of the fireplace. He nudges her to the floor and we see the fire slowly fade out.

Today there'd be two sweating and moaning bodies, a flash of oral sex, nipples and buttocks gleaming with sweat and who knows what else.

I think the original speaks not only for itself, but for our generation as well.
