THE GROWTH OF NARCISSISM

Psychiatrist Dr. Keith Ablow says that we are raising a generation of deluded narcissists:  “A new analysis of the American Freshman Survey, which has accumulated data for the past 47 years from 9 million young adults, reveals that college students are more likely than ever to call themselves gifted and driven to succeed, even though their test scores and time spent studying are decreasing.”

Dr. Ablow sees a tendency toward narcissism that has developed over the past thirty years.  He sees a “toxic psychological impact of media and technology on children, adolescents and young adults, particularly as it regards turning them into faux celebrities—the equivalent of lead actors in their own fictionalized life stories.

Where does all this narcissism originate?  Dr. Ablow cites Facebook, Twitter, computer games, and MTV as four sources.

On Facebook, one can claim hundreds of “friends” while feeling they are actually connected to celebrities that they “like.”
With Twitter, the ego is aroused by the feeling that they actually have a “following” that cares what they do even if they have to explain it in 140 characters.

When playing computer games one “can pretend they are Olympians, Formula 1 drivers, rock stars or sharpshooters while “ they are really in dens and playrooms on side streets around America; that is after their hearts have raced and heads have swelled with false pride for being something they are not.

I have a neighbor who is 60 years old.  She knows that I used to be a 200+ average bowler so one day she excitedly told me how her daughter in law had bowled a 298 game.  Needless to say I was impressed!  A 298 is only two pins away from a perfect 300.  When I asked what kind of ball she threw, I was informed that the score had been accomplished on a video game!

I didn’t know whether to laugh or shake my head in disgust so I just smiled and told her “good game.”  It was just another example of how people want fame the easy way.  It’s kind of like phony awards being given to losing teams and individuals in the never ending quest for someone to try and get their 15 minutes of fame although by false methods.

The original "veejays" on MTV in 1981.  L-R, Nina
Blackwood, Alan Hunter, Martha Quinn, J. J. Jackson,
(back) Mark Goodman
MTV shows kids on “reality” TV shows like "Jersey Shore" that are not even close to real life but kids suck it up and portray themselves in the same manner as people like Snooki and her friends.

Does anyone remember when MTV came on the air in 1981 with “veejays” Martha Quinn, J. J. Jackson, and Mark Goodman?  Do you remember the first song they played?  (Click here for answer)  It was a great music network then.  Now, they do “Jersey Shore.”

I have said it before and will repeat it now:  I think a lot of the false ego trips and artificiality of younger people today, especially males, is that they never had to serve in the military.  Dropping the draft in 1973 was a huge mistake.  The military turned a lot of boys into men; much more than the young lifestyles of today where "responsibility" is just another word they can’t spell.

Hi, Jim. I have noticed the same thing, however, I believe that it has been going on a lot longer than Twitter, Facebook & reality tv shows...Instead, I believe that the problem began to take root in our schools -- liberally applied praise without real merit, as well as the breakdown of applied discipline & contradiction of parental discipline when it does happen...-- and we have recently reached a point in our history where, as a whole group, adults no longer have any experience with discipline themselves. Therefore, adults no longer know how to discipline their children & do not know the value of discipline either.

I’ve heard of Dr. Ablow, mainly through his series of novels that I’ve read. Not bad, but a teenage character in them ticked me off with his arrogance, sullenness and ingratitude. And blond dreadlocks.

I think his assessment of what has caused and will continue to cause the deterioration of the ‘youth of today’ (AKA the old folks of tomorrow) is partially correct, but there are so many other contributing factors. Not the last of which are parents in denial, indifferent parents, helicopter parents, and ‘buddy’ parents. My mom was a MOM when I was growing up: she became my most beloved, best friend in adulthood.

In addition, teachers can’t teach without a valid paranoia that if they accidentally look the wrong way or – DEAR GOD FORBID – touch a student, the teacher can be sued for emotional distress, sexual innuendo, etc. who wants to be a teach and truly teach with that Sword of Damocles hanging over his/her head? And do you think the school administration will stand up for said teachers? Sure, oh look: pigs are flying over Orlando! Not me. Don’t even get me started on the low pay for the hours they put in across the course of a year.

Uh oh … I seem to be on a roll. I feel steam coming out of my ears … ;)

And today’s concept of ‘friend’ REALLY REALLY ticks me off! I think a friend is something very special, and to be cherished. People use the word interchangeably with casual acquaintance, the bartender, the chick selling jewelry on HSN. A friend will care for you and often put your needs above his/hers. A friend will be discreet. A friend will respect you. I see absolute red whenever I hear the advertisement that “You’ve got a friend at Bashas’.” STORES ARE NOT YOUR FRIEND!!!! RUSH LIMBAUGH IS NOT YOUR FRIEND! YOUR CASUAL COWORKER IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!

I can count my real friends on one hand, and I’d rather have that ‘low’ number that 345 ‘friends’ on Facebook. Several years ago, as you know, a person I considered my best friend and ‘sister’ emotionally destroyed me, crumbled the foundation of my life and beliefs, and tossed me away like rotten garbage – with absolutely no warning. I would have LITERALLY taken a bullet for her, and cut out my own tongue before speaking hateful, hurtful words. I’m pretty sure I was her friend; I know now that she wasn’t mine.

But I digress. Another thing so rampant today is the psychotic push to succeed fast and at ANY cost. The belief that ‘average’ is bad, and anyone without physical beauty is worth less than the gorgeous people. Dear God: parents actually let their teenage daughters get boob jobs! BOOB JOBS!

I’m glad I grew up when I did, because I wouldn’t be considered worthwhile in today’s culture. I bordered on minimal pretty, and have fought a weight battle all my life, and was shy to a fault until I started in the workforce. I’m glad I’m not that shy person any more, but I spent too much of my life trying to please people who really didn’t care about ‘me.’ Now I’m older, wiser, WAY more eccentric, more than a bit odd, actually, and I live my life as I want to live it. I only care what my real friends think, but only to an extent: I have to live with me 24/7. I can respect their opinions, but ultimately I have to go my own way.

PS In college I explored joining the Air Force. I even spoke to a recruiter. He made me stand up and turn around so he could check out if I looked good enough to join. He said I’d probably start out in the typing pool I never heard back from him, and the joining urge passed.

CJ....could not agree with you more!!
Your belief that parents and adults in general in today's society lack both knowledge and experience in responsibility and discipline is right on! As is your idea that it is rooted in our reliance on schools to be substitute parents in the education and discipline of our kids.
Neither of them have the experience nor the desire to be effective parents, nor to teach either discipline or responsibility to our kids which is a prime responsibility of a parent.

Jim McAllister said...

CJ,

Good to see you back.

We are in agreement. I remember when my parents would tell me sternly, "You do as your teacher tells you!"

It was a different era where parents didn't have much education in many instances and teachers were respected because they did. It seemed like the goal of all parents was to see their kids get a college education.

Today, parents have more education and sometimes clash with the methods of the teacher. In this liberal age it is thought that everyone has to be a winner even if they are the biggest loser in the world.

Because of that mentality we see trophies and ribbons handed to all kids so no one's feelings get hurt and no scoring is used for fear the losers will be upset. It's a big mistake and kids find out the hard truth later when they look for jobs.

The family unit is definitely different now. Mom used to be home for the kids and have dinner ready when dad got home. The kids better not screw up in those days. I remember when I did how my mom would say "You just wait until your dad gets home!' Those were scary words.

There was a commercial on TV a couple years ago where mom is a working mom and comes home to her family with a bucket of KFC for dinner. Yum! But not exactly a vision of the family scene I remember.

Glo,

What a nice coincidence! Comments from you and CJ in succession. You two were originals here in 2006 for the good old Plugged-in days.

I've done blogs on helicopter moms and buddy parents. What a bunch of bull both are.

The hovering moms are such a nuisance as to be intolerable and one's parents are not your buddies; they are your parents and should be treated as such. Any parents or kids who think otherwise are wrong; it simply is not a viable relationship.

In your case, it sounds like you and your mom had a great mother-daughter relationship which probably included your hearing about it if you strayed from the path.

I well remember the fourth grade. My teacher was Mr. Douglass who was usually very popular with the kids. One thing a kid never wanted to do though if he had a brain was piss off Mr. Douglass.

More than once I saw him grab kids bodily and throw them out of class into the hall. He wouldn't last one day today even though those kids had it coming for their bad behavior.

I believe that was the 1950-51 school year; one of which I will never forget.

Boob jobs on little girls, faux friends on Facebook, tattoos, People texting while driving, yapping on cell phones in public disturbing everyone around them.

It's the world of today and I guess it shows the human instinct of pretentious behavior. I'm glad I grew up in a different era.

It's going to be interesting to see if they can pry his ass and Michelle out of the WH after this term. I wouldn't be surprised if he fought to stay on. I's the greatest gravy train ride the louse has ever had.

Jim, If one looks up the definition of narcissist in the dictionary you'll see picture of Obama.

I still remember the words "you just wait until your dad gets home" it used to ruin my whole day.

I went to Catholic school and one thing you didn't want to do was have the nuns pissed at you. Nuns have no sense of humor. Any misbehaving would result in a dope slap upside the head or a wrap on the knuckles with a ruler.

I guess today that would be considered child abuse.

I don't understand what happens from one generation to the next. Deb and I brought our 2 kids up the same way we were raised but now that they have their own kids everything has changed.

There is no spanking any more. If the kid throws a tantrum they're put in time out. I guess spanking may hurt their self esteem.

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

You've got that right. He is the biggest narcissist of them all but his followers are so brain washed they have fallen for his lies. I would love to see this NLRB decision really nail his dead ass.

I went to public school but most of my friends were catholic and it's like you say: Don't piss them off. I heard of many instances of the hickory ruler across the knuckles.

Yes, it's different now. I have on my blog list schedule to do a blog on words I hate. One of them has to be self esteem. My old man probably couldn't spell it and didn't care about it when he took that straight razor strap off its hook.

I've even heard of kids suing their parents over things like spankings. I'm glad I never had kids.

CJ Phoenix said...

Thanks Sam & Jim.

If nuns were the teachers of kids nowadays, we would all have a lot fewer discipline issues. I went to Catholic schools too. Unfortunately, there are also priests involved...I was completely unaware of the issues involving priests when I was growing up & still in school but you should hear some of the stories I have heard now. Even some of the guys I went to high school with were abused by priests in grade school & St. Greg's neighborhood where I live right now seems to have been a hotbed back in the 60s & 70s...Under, guess who...Thomas O'Brien.

midnightsstaff said...

Evidently the Catholic culture tolerates this type of behavior or it would have been stopped centuries ago.

It's interesting whether narcissistic behavior is learned, instinctual or both..
maybe it is a latent human behavior that can either be nurtured or pruned.. I really never have given it much thought.

Public schools are in a predicament of their own making, they have championed liberal behavior.
Yet it's that same cultivated liberal behavior that in a classroom setting creates a negative environment that caters to the slowest, least capable as well as offering little meaningful control of the classroom or addressing the pedagogical concerns of the teacher.

Teaching has always been an art form and traditionally not served by a paint by the numbers approach yet that is the exact problem that always arises with a centrally controlled entity.

It takes a major act of criminal behavior or an insignificant but politically incorrect infraction to remove anyone from the classroom today, suspensions are a joke when they are given.

"Liberalism is a mental disorder"..
I guess that just about explains it.

Steve/DG said...

Well, this is a complete generalization. I could easily also say that old people can't adapt to anything and are crotchety.

There are many kids like you describe. I see another side. My daughter went out and got two jobs and is full time at college right now. Her boyfriend calls me Mr. And grades are important to her.

She pointed out to me just yesterday how a 38 year old could work as a submaker at Firehouse subs -- then when she asked it was his 6 year stint in prison that's keeping him down. Always an excuse.

I could equally blame your generation for letting my generation get away with so many damn excuses.

Need my success? I tell my kids that:
- trying is the first step in failure
- if the cops pick you up, don't call me to bail you out. Whatever you did sit in there and think about it
-- if the cops pick you up because of your friends, you shoulda picked better friends... see above
- you get what you earn. You get the job to pay for your car, and it's not as nice as your friend's BMW given to her by her dad. It's okay -- it means more. Besides, your friend's dad is banging everyone in the neighborhood and her mom is downing prozac like candy.
- own it and take responsibility.
- cheaters nearly always prosper, but you have to sleep with yourself.

Hmm, maybe I should write a book.... screw Dr Ablow.

midnightsstaff said...

But society has changed DG- there is no denying that.

The narcissistic tendencies of kids are pretty observable in Jim's neck of the woods because they are amplified over those in a "working class" community.
I never realized we were poor living in the Texas panhandle because everyone else was doing the same things I was for the same reason, lack of opportunity.
But if I as a kid had the choice I probably would have gone for the free ice cream just like anyone else would have.

But it's not just the i phones or the BMW's in the high school parking lot,
there is a distinct lack of ethics in society today that sends the wrong message.
How are you to take the guide posts seriously when you realize there are two sets of laws, one for us to obey but if you are somehow connected either politically or economically those laws don't apply.
..that is a very powerful message for a parent to overcome or resist accepting themselves.

midnightsstaff said...

Steve, what would happen to you or I if one of us got caught trading stocks based on inside information?

I can tell you, you would go to prison for quite a long time, but if Jon Corzine loses billions of dollars of investors gambling other's money through outright fraud, intending to keep the profits for himself- and then tell's Congress under oath the money just somehow "vaporized".. he is considered a potential replacement for Sec. of the Treasury..

That very same act of getting caught profiting by insider trading or moving a stock price through legislation would not be a crime if done by a legislator, does that send the wrong message?

You are right tho, and every one of your "bullet points to responsibility" were used by myself and countless other parents before- just ask my kids.

Those kids in Snottsdale are just doing what they have been taught, and in a Godless society the people will eventually find a god even if they have to manufacture one.
As long as we consider them as "The Ten Suggestions" this type of generational irresponsibility will continue to no one's surprise.

American simply needs a reboot.

CJ Phoenix said...

Do not forget, DG, that you are ex-military & that background has given you experience in discipline that you are able to pass on to your children. This is especially the case since your marriage remains intact & you have remained present & active in raising your children...All anybody has been saying here is that your generation as whole seems to be raising a whole lotta narcissistic kids who believe themselves entitled to success without climbing thru the ranks of adversity (i.e. discipline), whether that adversity is applied at school or at home or both. I for one honestly believe you & your kids are an exception, not a rule...

In my day, the pop-guru that helped destroy discipline in schools was Dr. Benjamin Spock. Mind you, that was pre-PC (computers), video games, reality tv...That was also a big part of the reason my parents put me in private schools.

CJ,

O'Brien has to be one of the most embarrassing figures in the local Catholic church for the stuff he pulled (hit and run, looking the other way concerning priests and altar boys). He is the first bishop to be convicted of a felony.

He also told people to never shop at Smitty's because they were open on Christmas. He never said a word about places liked Circle K which were also open. What a guy!

He turned down some big award a few years ago mainly because of public outcry if I remember correctly. Smart move!

Middy,

Barb was fortunate in that she taught 2 years in rural Missouri (1967-69)and 18 years in Kansas (1969-89).

I don't know if she could have put up with the heavy liberal nonsense of today.

It's no wonder we are producing a bunch of dumb ass weepy liberals.

You got someone to call you Mister? Wow! Don't let him get away! LOL

You're right, it is a generalization.

However, a lot of kids have been influenced by these sites and eventually reality will hit them. There is nothing wrong with places like Facebook as long as it is taken for what it is.

Your kids are lucky to have a father like you who has a work ethic and has had a good look at the world acknowledging right from wrong.

You also reinforce what I say about guys who have been in the military taking a more realistic look at life. There are things a young guy learns when doing a hitch that can't be learned anywhere else and it is all beneficial.

Jim McAllister said...

Middy,

I know what you mean about Snottsdale.

Lately, when Barb and I go somewhere, I've noticed an unmarked black Chevy Volt following us in our 2005 Hyundai.

Suddenly last night, we were visited by a group of people carrying torches and complaining to us that we must upgrade to a better and newer car in we wish to remain in north Scottsdale.

When I asked why, their spokesman simply said "Because it is the north Scottsdale way! You must own a new and better car so you can have high car payments like WE do!"

Needless to say, I have an appointment today at the BMW dealer. I don't want to be "different". It's important to "fit in."

Would Lady Gaga be considered a narcissist?

I see it as just a deeper degree of the immersion kids have in group think today with social media bringing the entire raw, uncut version of the world into every kids life.

The youth have always engaged in hero worship except there are few hero role models around for them today- just Lady Gaga and Ray Lewis- both narcissists of the worst odor..

I am pretty comfortable with the idea that narcissism can be cultivated.

Personal media devices are probably a root to problems we have today, someone once called television "the vast wasteland"... wonder what he would say about the internet and wireless file sharing?

I watched a hockey game tonight and I could see people right behind the team benches with I phones etc. in between them and watching the game.

Looks just like any other addiction to me.
.. in short a certain degree of narcissism has been intentionally cultivated into society because someone at the highest social level realized that widespread narcissism creates both useful idiots as well as abject despots.

Jim McAllister said...

Steve,

I'm talking primarily about those who follow celebrities, not just the average population.

We hear all the time about some "celebrity" who twitters to his/her 25,000 or so followers. It's those followers I'm talking about; the ones who think that Ray Lewis, Taylor Swift, etc. actually give a damn about them.

I guess I would define it as a "false celebrity complex."

Twitter just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. 140 characters is nothing and to use "U" for "You" and "r" for "are" among the many other abbreviations is not my thing. That usage is probably why kids can't spell anymore.

Jim McAllister said...

Middy,

We live in the "I have to have it now" generation.

Those people at the hockey game with the iPhones can't stand to let one second go by without connecting with someone either to check their tweets or send a message. Cell phones seem rather quaint now compared to what is available.

We have a neighbor who is 60 and she is never without her iPhone. Barb told her something one day and she said "Oh, I have to tell Pam" and immediately started texting a message. She couldn't wait one minute; it had to be NOW!

I laugh when I hear that some "celebrity" has just tweeted to their thousands of followers some inane information like "I just bought a nu Cadillac and really luv it."

Who cares? It reminds me of Jean Hagen as Lina LaMont in "Singing in the Rain" (1952) when she tells the audience, If we bring a little joy into your humdrum lives, it makes us feel as though our hard work ain't been in vain for nothin'. Bless you all.

No word if whether Bill Murray was in attendance when Phil appeared.

I don't know what the average slob can say on Twitter that anyone would care about.

Does anyone care if they get a tweet that Joe is going to the baseball game or the bathroom or anywhere else? Does anyone care if he bought a new car? Not me, and if I did care, I wouldn't have to know about it instantly.

Someone has to be a bit full of him (her) self to think it matters. On the other hand, maybe I'm wrong and it DOES matter to someone. It's just not me.

Even if I was getting tweets from celebrities, what could they say that I care about? "Hey, did you know that Beyonce was lip syncing?" Who cares about that? I already know she is a talentless loser.

What about "Did you know Obama is an idiot?" Hey, tell me something I don't already know!

Mike,

That skeet expert said that real shooters wear a vest with space for more shells and they certainly wouldn't dress like Obama. he also said O holds the rifle incorrectly and the photo has to be phony anyway.

It never ends with this clown.

Jim McAllister said...

Middy,

Great 4:16 video of that meeting in Buffalo. I like when the guy tells those people that "You will have to dispose of ammunition that is not in compliance."

Their laughter in response says it all.

Jim McAllister said...

Middy,

A win is a win I guess but 12,000 is not much of a crowd when you look at attendance around the league where sellouts are typical every game.

It looks like Jamison was just another wannabe wanting to own a team. As usual, he had no money.

Jim McAllister said...

That photo of jug ears and his f--- Obamaphone is sickening.

What a phony SOB! It's like "Well, doesn't everyone have to have a cell phone?" Hell no! Deal with it!

midnightsstaff said...

A strange SB happened..

I wonder if event security was as competent as the electrical providers were or just luckier.

Just about done watching football I think, gangland antics on the sidelines, ridiculous non calls for pushing a referee during a gang fight on the field- slugging players well after the play on camera and one of the most disgusting half time shows imaginable... really is this what America has turned into? a nation of wannabe thugs.

Congratulations to Ray Lewis.. just goes to show it's not what you do off the field that matters but what you do for your tribe that keeps you out of prison..

Pax Obama.. the new normal.

Jim McAllister said...

Great game for sure but I'd like to know what the deal was with the lights. That couldn't have been coincidental. Maybe Mary Landrieu can find out.

I laughed at the end of the game when Ray Lewis was celebrating. 6 kids from 4 women, married to none of them. Also got off of a murder charge somehow. A true member of scumbag central but there he was basking in the glory of a Super Bowl win.

Fortunately he is retiring so keep an eye on the news for his demise courtesy of a .45 between the eyes during a gang fight in some "club." Guys like him never learn the easy way. I don't picture him suddenly becoming a model citizen.

I didn't even watch the halftime show. Beyonce makes me want to puke; probably because she is puke.

Now, our leader is off on another trip to convince the "people" of the validity of another one of his stupid ass ideas.

It looks like I have to pinch myself again to believe this nonsense is really happening in this country.

Gay scout masters? Yeah, there's a wonderful idea. Turn a gay adult loose with a bunch of naive kids.

Mike Slater said...

Jim, Good game last night even though the 49's lost.

I never watch the pre game show or the halftime nor do I listen to the National Anthem because most people can't sing it correctly. When the game ends I turn it off. Depending on who the announcers are I sometimes watch the game muted.

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

I agree, I never watch the pregame, halftime, or any other of the French pastry surrounding the game.

I especially would never wastch any of those Obama loving phony half time entertainers like Beyonce the lip syncer.

I didn't really care who won and was ready to change stations after Baltimore looked like they were going to totally dominate. However, nice comeback by the 49ers to almost pull it out. I'm glad I stayed tuned.

Kaepernick is a good QB; if he avoids injury he should have a nice career. Good riddance to Ray Lewis.

midnightsstaff said...

Did you catch the game tonight?
looks like they are starting to put it together finally.
I really haven't cared about anything further than the playoffs for a long time now, the Superbowl has turned into less of a sporting event than a jet setter party each year.

I'm really not impressed with the spectacle it's morphed into, but then I march to a drum different than most I suppose and rarely find anyone agreeing with me on things like this..

Jim McAllister said...

Middy,

I rarely watch the Superbowl. To me, it quit having significance after the Chiefs won in 1970. That was the last year of the American Football League and the National Football League being separate operations.

After that they had the American and National divisions with inter- league play. That took a lot away as far as I was concerned. I liked having separate leagues much better but, as usual, it was about the bucks. To see two teams in the SB who might have played each other already during the regular season doesn't interest me. I liked the uniqueness of the two leagues with separate schedules.

My only interest in this year's SB was to see how Kaepernick did in the big game. If Smith was at QB, I wouldn't have watched.

Baseball has been ruined too since they went ti interleague play. I don't care about watching two teams in the World Series who have already played each other during the season.

I'm old fashioned I guess.

Jim McAllister said...

Middy,

Good hockey game with the Wild. 9500 is weak in butts in the seats but under the circumstances and it being a Monday game, I guess that should be expected.

It still looks pretty weak when you look at attendance around the other teams in the league.

A win is a win though even if its 2-1. We'll take it.

thats funny, I felt the same way. i dont like the 49ers, but by the 3rd quarter I wanted them to pull it out.
If they wouldnt have allowed that 107 yard run back, they could have won.

Mike Slater said...

Jim,I'm with on pro Football. I like it much better when it was the AFL and the NFL.

I started losing interest in baseball back in 69 when they went to division play.

I could care less about basketball or hockey. To me hockey is like watching soccer on ice.

Well at least I still have my college football to look forward to.

As you probably know our old pal Bodo is on azvoices now. Had a conversation with him yesterday about gun control. He's still as liberal as they come.

Something is changing radically in the sports culture lately.

Middy, I'm afraid the good old days are gone forever. I feel sorry for my kids and grand kids not having the joy of growing up like we did.

Steve,

The only team I have even a slight interest in is the Bengals.

When I was younger, I was a lot more into pro sports but I think the players had as much to do with that as anything. I look at these guys today and just shake my head.

Then we have a stupid ass president saying football is too dangerous. I'm sure the NFL is thrilled with that remark. The players know what they are getting into. They don't need some guy from Kenya to tell them right from wrong.

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

Unfortunately Bozo has returned. Well, at least we got one year off from that phony.

I don't think he even realizes how unimportant he is. The state realized it when they fired his ass a few years ago. I'll always enjoy that photo of him being thrown out of the office by that cop. LOL

Those blogs are OK. I wrote a few initially blowing off a little stream. Now, I'm just doing historic stuff and getting a lot of hits so it's kind of fun.

After all, how many times can I say Obama is the worst president in the history of this country? LOL

Frank Pitts, Lenny Dawson, E J. Holub, Buck Buchannan: great players from the 70 SB champs.

The Vikings never knew what hit them in that game.

midnightsstaff said...

Yeah I'm pretty much with you on everything so far, it's hard to believe that the American public can be so easily led to believe that the very government that is destroying the middle class is somehow competent to address the players safety needs in the NFL..

There were a lot of good things about the 1970 Super Bowl.

It showed that the AFL had arrived as the Chiefs followed the Joe Namath '69 Jets and easily beat the Vikings after being a serious underdog.

I'll never forget how easy it was. Hank Stram said it was so easy it was like stealing. They ran end arounds with Frank Pitts and Otis Taylor at WR had a field day. Steberud was kicking field goals with ease.

It was a great day in KC. I'll always remember the parade.

Gene Kelly did a good job playing Mencken in "Inherit the Wind" (1960).

He plays Mencken when Mencken was covering the Scopes "Momkey Trial" of the 1920s in Dayton, Tennessee.

In the film they call him "E. K. Hornbeck" but that is just a name used for the film.

Kelly was good in that role.

I don't know what some of these clerks would do if they had to count change into a customer's hands.

I handed a girl at a McDonald's a half dollar a couple years ago and she had to check with her manager as to whether it was real money.

How many times do you get change handed to you in a pile and not counted? Very common.

If that register doesn't tell them how much it is, they are lost.

I like to confuse them with stuff like giving them a $5 bill and a dime when a bill is $1.10 just to see them figure out what the hell the dime is for. Lucky for them, these days most registers tell them what to do. Otherwise, it's DUH!

Jim,my grandmother taught me how to make change when I was 10 years old.

Kids today don't have a clue.

A few years ago I stopped at a Jack in the Box and ordered lunch. The girl rang it up and it came to $5 and some change. I gave her a $20 knowing how much I should get back. She couldn't figure it out so she called the manager over and he couldn't figure it out so I gave them both a math101 lesson. I told them here is what my order came to and here is what I gave you and this is how much money I get back.

You see people like that and it's not hard to figure out how Obama got elected.

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

I know what you mean. When they dump a handful of change in my hand and I count it before I leave the register.

It's not only stupidity these days; it's a lack of pride in what these people do for a living. They just don't care.

When I worked retail or any other job, I was a chronic over achiever. I wanted to be the best i could be. Not much of that these days. I had that thinking instilled in me by my father. Today, a lot of kids don't even have a father.

Unknown said...

Somehow, I can believe Mike Slater's Jack in the Box story. But if the manager was that ignorant, how was inventory managed? Probably a touch screen computer so easy that a monkey could do it.

I just need to get the video done on the camera, then I'll download it to the computer for editing.

Part of it was experimental.

I put on a green hoodie and green camo face paint and going for the wolfman thing. "I love Robin Meade. I look in through window and see her in little box on table. She is only two feet tall, but I still like her. I will rescue her from the box and she can have a litter of puppies in the cave! Robin Meade is pretty and they keep her in a box!"

That's of course the CNN Morning Express chick and is referencing a TV. The box.

We were originally going for the Bigfoot thing, but you know songwriters. They broke up and now others are making a wolfman song.

If the green screen costume works, we want to do Wolfman playing cards and stuff like that.

midnightsstaff said...

Wolfman to Bigfoot?- sounds believable,
my point was young students need to learn the principles found in math not merely how to squeeze an answer out of a computer..

I think maintaining widespread ignorance is intentional as far as the education cartel is concerned, when someone learns their math what they are actually doing is learning a logical approach using a level of critical thinking- and that is the last thing our schools want to create, a public with the ability to think is a threat to the State.

Unknown said...

Don't want to scare you guys.

The Fort Leonard Wood Guidon newspaper reports the following.

"More than 100 Soldiers [unit deleted] lined Constitution Avenue on Jan. 28 with equipment and vehicles staged in preparation of rapid-deployment to a domestic, catstrophic incident requiring a presidential declaration for federal response within the Continental U.S."

It was training. A test.

Then the Superbowl probably got hacked. Banks got hacked. Federal Reserve got hacked. Sounds like the preparation of an attack to me.

Then of course the chick from Australia claims that I'm insane and she's sick of it.

I'm thinking of writing a CD of country songs from our friendship falling apart. That other chick does that whenever she breaks up with a guy, so I figure I oughta take Middy's suggestion.

"It was raining, the day my mom got out of prison ..." Oops been done.

Middy, allowing you to live in such ignorance and pride is an insult to you. It's best to let such pigs remain in the wallow of their own making, cause they think life is just fricking perfect! That's why they let rock stars do drugs.

Now people like me are constantly struggling. Pick a brainless waitress and make her a rock star. Let her talk to her fans, steal lines from them and make millions, but she studied psychology. The woman is a professional at milking the system and she calls that "work." She's a moron.

I studied social sciences in college, journalism, a smidge of psychology and mainstream entertainment is pissed about the Internet, because they have to sell GOOD songs ALL THE TIME, because no one is buying an album of crap for one song anymore. Boo fricking hoo!

I made two versions of the Dell Mack video, the last time, because some music professional said that the long version wouldn't get far. He could make the short one go viral! It didn't turn out like he said, so Frank Zappa was right.

Guess which video has been seen in more countries? The music professional was wrong and I am right.

"Party like a rock star" has worked wonderfully, don't you think? Everyone wants to be rich and famous and 'live the good life.' Little do they know, that they are merely bar coded narcissistic, mentally ill people who are controlled by massive amounts of drugs and alcohol, sedatives, etc. Little does the public know that the lowest homeless person is better than possibly the queen of rock in God's eyes. Or mine.

Still, I wouldn't mind marrying a rock star, except for her insanity and probable nagging. I'd probably borrow her plane and we could live happily on separate continents. Rich folks can do that, you know.

That's funny, considering that I just threw a bottle of rum away. It was a gift from Bodo from the Queen Mary II. Real expensive, probably. Poured it down the drain, threw the bottle away.

The fact that Middy and others allude that I'm a drunk, just because my wife was an alcoholic, is just one of many false judgments made and I have no use for such ignorant people. Probably drunks themselves or cocaine addicts.

I remember a time when all you people talked about on Jim's blog was getting drunk. Your photos are almost all with a beer or other alcohol in your hand.

You've watched my videos. If you did, I dare you to find a drink and if you mess with my copyrighted photos ever again, I will sue you for every dime you have. The Bill Gamelson photo insults of changing my farm name have NOT been forgotten.

Ahhhh- so nice to see someone else invoking the memory of Frank Zappa early in the morning, we all know that great minds think alike, unfortunately the self destructed, hobbled mind of a car chasing parrot that you have cultivated is not one of them.

When you expansively declare that "Everyone wants to be rich and famous and 'live the good life." - you ignore about 98 percent of the achievers in America.. we don't want to be rich and famous, we just want everyone to have the same chance at reaching their potential as everyone else has..

You think there is some switch somewhere that controls thereby allowing a link to immediate gratification.
.. sadly that is impossible.. it is a process Rick, something that collectivists like you can never understand.

But feel free to keep on scapegoating your betters, blaming others for the well deserved feelings of insecurity and overall worthlessness that greets your morning each day- it's the new normal.

Miss Azcentral. This illegal immigrant that I used to date. Heh heh.

I understand that Donald Trump is suing Bill Mahr, and sent his birth certificate to prove that his father wasn't an ape. Funny.

Donald Trump's birth certificate had a bar code on it, so there is some question about when he was born or where. I heard Kenya.

Bill Mahr wants to see Trump's long form birth certificate.

Someone told me recently that I have to learn to work the system. But the entertainment system is obviously broken. Why in the hell would I want to completely copy what another filmmaker does, when they have NO CLUE why people watch films. They just happen to be those people the public chose and they call it brilliance.

I call it happenstance. It could have been the other guy. But my films have been seen all over the world, but only by high profile people. Not by everyone. So it's gone to the right people and my videos may do more change, than anyone elses.

What part of social science don't those people in entertainment NOT get?

If I really wanted an audience, I'd do the following things: boob shots, some disgusting activity, a celebrity embarrassment, prepping for fearful things and I'm trying to avoid those things that created the circumstances now leading us into global war.

If enough of the right people who know my legends see one of my happy videos, maybe they won't decide to push the button to nuke their neighbor.

I know. But a little narcissism can be a good thing.

He is a guy who posts 25 year old photos of himself on the internet trying to make people think he is not really the dried up 79 year old guy that he is.

That doesn't sound logical for anyone of normal mentality does it? How about this: He had a minor job with the state as a shit inspector and got fired and escorted by a security cop out of his cubicle to the street.

You may ask, "Why?" Because his boss told him not to cover the entrance to his cubicle with a Venetian blind when he was on break! He also was in trouble because he disagreed about how the office coffee pot should be regulated.

Now, you are probably wondering how I know this stuff. It's because he happily admitted it on the old blogs a couple years ago.

He also called CJ a "Big fat pig". Class guy, huh?

This blog goes out to the entire world. I might make you guys stars and my commission is only 10%!

Rebecca will be disappointed, she always is in the mood for a tussle.

My payment might be delayed again this month Jim, ten percent may not seem like much in Scottsdale but in the mean streets of the seis dos tres the peso is still King.

Sorry about that deal we had for me to pay you in Peso Argentine.
How could I have known that overnight Kirtchner would deem it worth 46 percent less?

Fascist dictators all behave the same way... might want to think about converting some of your soon to be devalued greenbacks into something more stable.
Copper ingots perhaps?

Hey, win some lose some eh?

early game today, pre show starts in two minutes on Fox sports.

Jim...don't get too excited you're ten percent may not add up to much....Rumor has it youtube only counts to 37....

And now back to the blog topic....MY back surgery was a 100% complete success...

Jim, Bodo posted on his blog that all handguns should be banned because all they're used for is to kill people. I tried to point out to him that handguns are used for target shooting, hunting and personal protection.

The fact is every big game animal in Arizona can be taken with a handgun.

Middy,

10% of nothing is still nothing I guess. I already have those copper ingots; they make nice doorstops.

I have the game on: 0-0, 5 minutes to go. I'm not greedy; I'll take one point playing in San Jose.

Proud,

That's great news about your surgery!

Stay off those roofs from now on!
