CHEAP GAS AND CADDYING: A LOOK BACK

30 CENT GAS? YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING!

Unless you are a certain age, you probably don’t remember when buying a tank of gasoline for your car was quite a different experience from what one would get today.  It’s easy to describe today’s experience as it consists of you getting out of your car, turning on the pump, and filling the tank yourself with gas that costs well over $2 a gallon most of the time. You may even clean your windshield if you wish provided cleaning materials are provided for you to do it yourself.

For many younger drivers, that has been the only experience they have known for their entire driving days.  For those of us who have been driving for a long time we remember when gasoline was sold at “service stations.”  The word “service” describes exactly what they were:  Places where your car was not only filled with gas by an attendant  but the engine oil level was checked, the windshield washed, tire air pressure checked, battery water checked, along with the brake fluid. If the attendant was really thorough, you may have even had your floor brushed out. In those days “service” meant what it said.

These days we celebrate when gas prices drop into the low $2 range.  When I was stationed in Missouri with the Air Force in the early 1960’s, I can’t remember ever paying more than about thirty cents a gallon.  I used to fill up my 1961 Chevy for about $4; a sweet deal by today’s standards. Did I mention that a lot of stations used to also give trading stamps like S & H Green Stamps?  Yeah, that too.

CADDYING AT THE LOCAL COUNTRY CLUB

With the introduction of electric and gasoline golf carts years ago, I doubt if any public golf courses or private country clubs today offer the services of caddies anymore but when I got out of high school in the late 1950’s, caddying was still going strong and although it was pretty hard work, it paid more than jobs like sacking groceries or making deliveries for the local grocery store.

1967 Masters Champion Gay Brewer
played in my foursome at Cincy
Country Club in 1958.
I caddied at the Cincinnati Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio.  It was fairly close to my home but more importantly, it‘s membership consisted of the cream of Cincinnati society which hopefully meant some decent tips.  I would arrive early in the morning at the caddy shack so I would be one of the first called out, hopefully to carry “doubles” or two bags for eighteen holes.  If my players were fast enough, I usually had time left before dark to get another group for the afternoon.  At $3 per bag plus a hopeful tip, I usually could make about $15 on Saturday or Sunday; not bad dough for a teenager in those days even though it meant carrying two heavy bags through eighteen holes of golf twice in one day.

Besides most of the players walking the courses, another difference in those days was at the practice range. Players would warm up the same as now except there weren’t vehicles that drove across the range to pick up the balls. It
was the caddy’s job to take a sack out on the range to shag
his player’s golf balls and take them back to the pro shop.
Needless to say, we gave our members plenty of room to hit the balls although I did see a fellow caddy get conked once!

In retrospect, caddying was a worthwhile experience.  It taught me the value of a dollar and the importance of going to college to better myself in life after serving Uncle Sam in the USAF.  It also taught me to enjoy golf, a game which I still play regularly today.

Jim, I started driving in the late 60's. Gas in the Phoenix area was about 25 cents at that time. My dad worked for the city of Phoenix which had their own gas pumps and we could get a discount so gas was only 22 cents. When I worked for the phone company they had their own pumps and bought gas in bulk for 10 cents a gallon discount.

Don't you miss the good old days, I know I do.

Jim McAllister said...

Thanks for the post Mike.

I miss the old days in a lot of ways. There were difficulties then like now but I don't remember anything like these college shootings that have become rampant lately. First Oregon, then Northern AZ, now Texas. It's almost like they are timed to Obama's visit to the Oregon school to push for more gun control. He better watch out for that newspaper editor out there who really has it in for his ass. That guy knows damn well that Obama is there to push for gun control and give himself a pat on the back. He better be careful, he may get more than he bargained for. I have a suggestion: I'll back his gun control ideas if he will personally go into Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, and Georgia and personally pick up everybody's guns.

As far as gas, I was stationed in western Missouri for most of my 1961-65 hitch in the USAF and the gas was unbelievably cheap. I remember a couple of times it got down to 19.9 and very rarely got up to 30.9. I would say the average was about 25.9 the whole time I was there. Part of the time I had a VW Bug so gas was a minor expanse. Fina and Vickers were the best stations.

With cheap gas, 15 cent McDonald's burgers and $1.00 six packs of Bud and Schlitz I lived pretty good on an Airman 1st class pay.

Jimmy, I was told today not to seek any more treatment with the VA, after I got a flu shot, of course. No blood tests, mean no result, means no proof that I'm right. My healthy condition is an embarrassment to the VA, Jimmy.

Doc was funny. He read the records I dropped by and everyone's amazed I'm doing as good as I am and not to get blood tests anymore, because I'm not supposed to be this healthy. It's actually illegal. I've refused treatment, you know.

Can you imagine a bunch of old guys on the Golf Courses in your area all acting like me? Good God, what if the SN Rules caught on? It would be pandamonium! BO would be impeached! I need to keep a low profile.

Jim McAllister said...

Rick,

I like the part about BO getting impeached. Did you see those signs in Oregon yesterday telling him to "Go play golf" and "Go Home."?

I love those people; they can spot a phony right away.

California passed a medical weed bill to regulate it, so now my local paper wants to interview me about bad health, records to prove it and recovery, as well as the strokes, guitars I will have to plug Jimmys blog. Relaxation. Fall on my sword and hope medical patients win out. Oh and I was offered a job as a news stringer. Wouldn't even pay for gas.

I know. Don't rock the boat.

Unknown said...

I sent you another message from my smartphone after texting with who I thought was a news reporter, but is the publisher. I've been offered a job as a stringer for a few different newspapers under their control. We're in negotiations.

A Missouri county is going to prosecute an elderly leukemia patient for smoking weed. They should just take a mulligan on that one. There is a major shift in policy coming. It's in the wind.

BO has to win Oregon back or the Dems will lose in 16.

Golf ... if I return to writing, I'm going to give golf a try again.

Unknown said...

Hey Jimmy, I heard there is a gas war between Missouri and neighboring states. Gas is down below two dollars a gallon in some Missouri locations.

Reality hit me, Jimmy. No return to journalism. Best I could do is freelance from home. Oh well. Hey, the guitar playing has been great today! Lots of visitors lately. Jen's friend, Heather has been very nice to me. Dinner was great. It's like my own personal Tan-Tar-A and all I need is a golf course.

Doc said I could have micro strokes at any time without warning. And eventually, you know. Yep. Did I mention what an incredible blog you wrote this time, Jimmy? It's good! Oregon, the state of guns and weed doesn't like Obama. I'm still on earth, right? Not in heaven? Wasn't sure. Seems like heaven.

Unknown said...

I should really move to Colorado or Oregon for my health, or rather to keep using what works and legally. The VA doc won't treat me, because my own brand of treatment is WORKING! BO changed the VA so that vets have to use prescription meds and if I take pain pills again, the liver disease will come back. The wife drinking again after her liver cleared up and she died just a few months later.

Reckon I got no choice but to abandon the Missouri property and head West soon.

List: Guitars, drums, amps, bass, and golf clubs. The necessities of life.

Jim McAllister said...

Rick,

Hell, an interview is an interview. Someone might discover you. Same with the news stringer job. One never knows; could lead to something better. Go for it!

Jim McAllister said...

Rick,

Don't return to golf unless you have a lot of patience. Toughest game in the world.

Keep me current on the news stringer job. Sounds interesting.

Jim McAllister said...

Sounds like you are in a state of flux. Maybe you should reconsider Colorado.

I've long given up on any money magically ever showing up. Ellen helps people who look good on camera and usually with kids. I think they usually have to have friends that care to write in with a sad story about some nice person and that just isn't my life, Jimmy. I take care of me and I find people to pay to care about me.

Jimmy, no doctor is going to clear me for a job as a stringer or freelancing. They let me play guitar and drums and talk to people in Scottsdale. Music is a social thing and it exercises the mind. But I can't possibly know anyone famous. The government said so.

Golf is supposed to be hard, Jimmy. Especially if you keep score. When you keep score, that's when you beat up the ground with your club and cuss a lot.

SteveBuzzardo said...

The gas taxes we pay now, are more that the total price of gas was back in the old days. Of course CA and NY have the highest state tax on gasoline. Just the state tax on a gallon of gas is around 50 cents.
At least here in AZ we have one of the lowest gas tax rates.

Steve

Unknown said...

Yes Jimmy, I am in a state of flux in definition of the hospital thing and now life is different. More herbal. Salads. I don't benefit from it, but I pay for Jen and Heather's comfort on my land. They are helpful. There is no work, so I'd be paying their utilities while I lived in Colorado.

It's a pipe dream, Jimmy. The mind needs to live from day to day. Golf and music are good for that.

First hole on the Pussycat Breaks, an island in the middle of the Atlantic for a golf course ... 465 yards, a straight drive. A gimmee. The next one has a genuine Tiger Woods (TM) sand trap complete with genetically modified sand made from a process using depleted uranium. See, the wit is still a little there.

Unknown said...

Jimmy, after having that brain trouble, I really do not see a doctor releasing me to move unless I have a place to move to in Colorado. I figured out that I can probably just go by train and come back. Leave Jen and Heather the Jeep. One of these days, I won't be able to drive anyway. I worry sometimes about having a stroke while driving, but Heather having medical training said that the pills should prevent that. I woke up angry this morning, a little cloudy in the mind, nausea and mild headache. The doc said I could be having those things at any time and never even know it until the big one happens.

For therapy, I've been playing along with SN song, "Hard Advice" and "For What It's Worth." The former is easier to play to with a Squier fat strat with finger slides in what my friends call, a bass style of lead guitar. I'll have to record some video, because I play rather well and in key now. I still don't know one song. I can't remember that much detail.

Jen and Heather are cooking for me tonight and doing my laundry. Looks like God is working things out, I guess. Heather helps me out a lot. I think it would be neat to see FM in concert just once. Bucket list. And hanging out with SN. Golf. I'd like to meet Vladimir Putin. I think we'd play a fabulous game of Chess. People watching. Never touched the ocean and never seen a lot of stuff. Anyway ...

Hey Jimmy, check out what I just found on YouTube and I posted it to Facebook. President Nixon on tape secretly conspiring against marijuana use. Why? To destroy Israel. Huh? Uh, yeah.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0093Tqu8n2E

I am not watching the Democrat debate. That's time I'll never get back in my life. I know the Republicans are bought and paid for, but at least they are halfway intelligent.

Mike Slater said...

Jim, for some reason I watched the Democrat debate. What a waste of time. That's 2 hours out of my life I'll never get back. Four liberals and a socialist is the best the Democrats can do?

Of course they all spewed the liberal line that the rich don't pay their fair share of taxes even though the rich pay the bulk of the taxes. They want to tax the rich to pay for all their free shit programs like college, health care for illegals etc.

Unknown said...

I got invited to a jam session by a professional musician to play with him on stage at a club tonight. I must be a musician. I've got an eight hundred dollar guitar, five bucks in gas and duct tape holding my Jeep together. Gee, I don't know if a micro stroke did this or it was the morphine, but it's a cool ride.

Still thinking about leaving Missouri, Jimmy. Take a lot of thinking, discussion with friends, planning and stuff. Might take the train to Denver, rent a cardboard box from a homeless landlord cause my credit sucks and you need a good FICO score to do anything in cities these days. Breakfast behind the Denny's at six, then lunch in a take out dumpster and for dinner, only the finest in garbage. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

I never even considered watching it. Just the sight of Hillary makes me have a great desire to do Monica. You know, kinda like Bill! LOL

If those assholes win, this country is in big trouble; even worse than we have now. It amazes me how the rich get so criticized by those pricks. If the rich worked hard to earn their dough they shouldn't get crap from anyone.

Jim McAllister said...

Whoa! Lunch from a dumpster? Cardboard box? You may want to reconsider! LOL

Jim McAllister said...

So true, Steve.

Gas was really cheap in retrospect during those USAF years 1961-65. I can only speak for Missouri and Kansas where if it went to 30 cents we felt like we were getting screwed. Actually saw it at 19.9 for a couple days once.

I remember driving to Cincy on leave a couple times and could't believe the cost in Illinois; about 35.9! We would kill for that today; seemed high then.

When Barb and I got married in '67 we drove back to Missouri in my '61 Chevy with a trailer on back and stopped for gas in Illinois. It was $7.50 for a fill up. It was at a small station and one of the guys working there asked the other if he filled the trailer too to have cost that much!

Unknown said...

Jimmy, I can get a nice refrigerator box in Scottsdale with a view of the golf course for just two cartons of cigarettes! In Denver, it would only cost me a carton of cigarettes and I get a larger box and a bag of newspapers for insulation! Woo hoo! It's like Hotel Democrat! Fresh coffee is served with a donut every morning, fleas are included and I get the entire experience! Sometimes I miss those days of simplicity. Fifty cent chicken livers to eat or to use for bait!

But after I joined the Army, I got to play golf with the officers as an enlisted man! It was cool learning to be a gentleman. They made me sleep in a bed and I had to get used to indoor plumbing. Now that I live in the woods, I can have my pick of trees to mark. Golf is still fun though. It's like solitaire baseball.

Cuba is helping in Syria? After all BO has done for them? How rude! George Bush used to say, if you give a mouse a cookie, they're gonna want a glass of milk.

I don't know how I'm moving to Colorado. Elderly. Guess I'll stay put and continue getting rid of problem people. Another corrupt official down, but not my doing.

On Tuesday night, the city marshal gave the report on city crimes and on Wednesday, he was arrested for committing crimes that he himself did. And these folks are telling military veterans that smoking medical pot is sinful.

Bombshell. A hacker told me that there is a redacted report about me and it's highly classified. It was dated 1993 and this video of Clinton apologizing for MK Ultra was also 1993, I think. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRTOB8JPwa8

I've got an appointment today with a JAG officer in a little while and he's also a county prosecutor. Nothing about you, Jimmy. I'm going to try to convince the prosecutor to ignore military veterans using marijuana for medical purposes. There are cancer patients being prosecuted and they need their money for medical bills.

You're right, Jimmy. I don't feel comfortable playing golf. I love politics though.

Unknown said...

Hey, I'm back after meeting with the prosecuting attorney. I told him the way it is; there are certain towns targeted by the feds, there will be more than just gay marriage, the confederate flag wasn't Sharia compliant and part of the Missouri motto is "... divided we fall," and someone is doing just that.

Gotta step in and do something to change things in our favor, because I'm too old for a prayer rug.

Golf, old guy style. I think I hit the rough, but it lays pretty well.

Jim McAllister said...

Rick,

If a vet uses marijuana for medical purposes I say he shouldn't get grief for it. Hell, if he had some physical or mental problem from military duty, that's the least they can do.

Too many jerks these days who never served a goddam day trying to instill rules against guys they know nothing about. Plus, we have a worthless guy in the White House who smoked so they should leave the vets alone.

Jim McAllister said...

Rick,

The way the Confederate flag has been treated in the last year is shameful. Just another case of worthless liberals led by the phony president going against something that was not hurting anyone.

The South has a right to preserve its flag and pride and screw the liberal assholes who don't like it. People aren't supposed to show that flag but it's OK to decorate the White House in gay colors and fly THEIR flag.

It only shows how far this country has slipped and how the rest of the world laughs at Obama.

Unknown said...

I pushed my luck today, Jimmy. I needed to probe for information though. At one point, the prosecutor blushed while he was describing marijuana and the law, which is a classic gesture of lying. Those things are automatic. They can't be controlled, so he doesn't believe what he was saying. How can I trust someone who is lying to himself?

A good Republican enforces the law, which means that they will do what BO tells them. It's hardwiring in the brain. Programming.

I asked if BO ordered gun confiscation and that was made law, would he do that too? No response. Sometimes I push my luck too far, Jimmy.

Unknown said...

Hey, Jimmy. How's the Saturday? Well, I wrote a little something after speaking informally to Pulaski County Missouri's prosecutor Kevin Hillman, a Republican practicing what I believe is a form of Population Control.

Do you think I am thinking okay or not?
https://www.facebook.com/rkepple1/posts/10153623086000549

Jim McAllister said...

Rick,

If BO ordered gun confiscation, I doubt if he could get anyone to enforce it for him. Hell, in the 1920's the Feds couldn't even get Prohibition effectively enforced. Imagine trying to take guns away from Americans. However, if Obama wants to try that, I suggest he start in the hills of Kentucky and personally try to take their guns. It would be a good deal for American citizens as he would instantly disappear without a trace and gun haters would learn not to screw with gun owners. Very efficient indeed!

Jim McAllister said...

Rick,

The marijuana situation in Pulaski County appears to be muddled. It sounds like Mr. Hillman is a "by the book" guy who doesn't want to upset any apple carts regardless of past legislation.

If the Bush administration approved marijuana that should be good enough but Hillman's hands seem to be tied by a president who himself has been a marijuana user.

If I needed to use the stuff, especially for medicinal reasons, I would just do it on the sly and the hell with Hillman and the rest of them. Probably none of those guys ever served and have no concept of its value.

Just more bureaucratic bullshit.

Unknown said...

Songwriter Dannie O'Reilly visited yesterday and he watched the video I had been working on for him and then we removed his stills for the concept and recorded him on the Green Screen and then incorporated it into the music video.

Don't forget to watch the outtake with the actual guitar playing that he did after the ending credits. Nashville music producers just told me to just make music videos like I've seen them on CMT, but I ignored their advice since I need credits.

One day, I'll have to film a golf instructional video ...

Mike Slater said...

Jim, my son's a cop here in the Valley and I asked him once if he ever got an order to go to people's houses and take their guns would he do it. He said heel no because he's a gun owner too. There is over 100 million gun owners in this country and over 300 million guns. There is no way people are going to give up their guns. I'll give mine up one shot at a time.

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

I read where Hillary says she would like to confiscate all guns like Australia did. I'd like to see her try. If she gets the chance (heaven forbid!) I hope she starts personally in some place like the back roads of Kentucky or Tennessee. She would last about one minute down there.

The do gooder liberals just don't get it. People like her and Obama are idiots with no common sense. It's an embarrassment to this country that these clowns can even think about getting elected It is the bad guys who have the guns, not everyday citizens who keep a gun for their own safety at home or to hunt.

Jim McAllister said...

Rick,

Tell Dannie I'm really impressed with his outtake playing at the end of that piece. That definitely was not his first day playing. I love the improvisation. Plus the tape had a professional look to it, very good.

It looks like you are back in the music business. Send tapes on anything else you think is good.

Unknown said...

I sent Dannie a message with the comment, Jimmy. He'll appreciate it.

Dannie says that I am out of key in all music that I play, except for Blues and Jazz. That's my Squier Fat Strat that Dannie is playing in the outtake. Dannie used to play in Texas and competed with the Vaughn's for gigs.

I love lead guitar; that's impressive that Dannie used to compete with Stevie Ray in Texas. Post anything you think is worthy by him and I'll put it on the blog.

In the 1950's, there was a style of modern jazz where they sang slightly off key. I remember in particular singer June Christy who was popular at that time with that style.

Jim, Hillary and Obama have armed Secret Service protection 24/7 but they don't want me and you to have guns to protect ourselves. They should forgo that Secret Service protection then they might understand.

I heard Hillary the other day say if she's elected she's going after the NRA. Good luck with that. All the mass shootings the blame always goes to the gun and the NRA and never the shooter.

The NRA doesn't sell guns or pull the trigger.

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

If there are two things that Hillary and Obama have in common it is that they are both stupid idiots without an ounce of common sense. Typical of two rats standing knee deep in chicken shit shaking hands with one hand and stabbing each other in the back with the other.

If someone nails them both I hope they are paraded right down Main Street as an example of two fools who had no common sense.

My Jeep is the only thing running right now among a few households. It's blowing oil and I need to get it in the shop. I need to have the Democrat drained and replaced with Republican. That should fix it.

I'm supposed to be focusing on the electric guitar and I've got another video of me playing along with a Blues backing track. Dannie was impressed. "Dude, you're a Blues man!" Considering my life, I can see that.

I absolutely LOVE this election. You've got Hillary Clinton and she's the SN of politics. Jeb Bush and he's the Nashville of politics. Bernie Sanders ... would you like a little wine with your chicken in every pot? Donald Trump. Isn't it curious how people CLAIM to HATE a corporate/government alliance and yet, the front runner is a guy who epitomizes a corporate/government alliance?

Well, I've only had five hours of sleep and things gotta get done. Jen's off with her boyfriend and everyone else is too busy doing nothing. I am not wealthy, so I buy prepaid Republican instead of subscribing to a GOP plan.

Jim, Biden said today he's not running for president. That leaves Hillary a clear path to the nomination. If she gets elected we're looking at 4 or 8 more years of liberalism. I may have to leave the country.

Hey Jimmy, the president of a PAC is coming to see me next month. We're going to be discussing local issues and how they can be changed.

My friends warn me to stay out of it. "You've got a good life, Rick. Enjoy it." Leave the country up to the politicians they say. There's nothing you can do, Rick. You're just going to get yourself in trouble. We won't talk to you anymore if you keep it up, Rick. They don't believe me about RR or SN, and they say that I shouldn't take risks. Dora and SN both said that I have to take risks.

There's a jam session at my studio tomorrow night if anyone's interested. I have a drummer coming and another guitarist.

Jim McAllister said...

Rick,

It will be interesting to see how Hillary does. I can't stand the lying bitch but I can see her getting some sympathy votes because of how much the Reps are harassing her. I hope to hell she doesn't win. I don't think I can look at her ugly ass for 4 years or more. Hopefully, voters will see her negligence in Libya plus realize that she means more high taxes from another loser Dem give away artist.

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

I wonder how much they had to pay Biden to drop out.

Yes, she now has the nomination and with the Repubs screwing up every chance to nail her, she seems like a shoe-in. That is, unless Trump can get up enough steam to beat her. It's hard to say if he can since he is an unknown quantity in politics but he is holding strong in the polls since we have a lot of people plenty pissed at idiot Obama and the rest of the libs.

I watched a little of the Benghazi hearing today and it didn't seem like the repubs were that impressive in breaking her down. Lord help us if she wins and the way this country has gone to hell with all the liberal crap now in force under Obama we may be screwed.

Maybe something like a Trump-Carson ticket would work. Neither are politicians and that could be a help for them. People are sick of the phonies we have in Washington and we know all the NRA guys would never vote for Clinton.

It should be interesting. I know that the Twitter members are sold against the Dems.

Unknown said...

Jim, and the envelope ... I'm getting a reading ... I perceive ... yes, the vision is becoming clearer ... Jim doesn't like Hillary Clinton.

Jimmy, I'm sorry to tell you this, but as far as I can tell, she might throw some wild hand gestures, but Hillary Clinton's telling the truth.

It's definitely deja vu.

Mike Slater said...

Jim, I've been voting since 1972 and have never voted for a Democrat and don't intend to start now. To me Democrats are the enemy. As an NRA member for 30 years Hillary would be the last person in the world I'd vote for. When see attacks the NRA she's attacking me.

Hillary is a born liar and would't know the truth if it bit her in the ass. God help us if she's elected.

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

I agree. It's a sad commentary that she has a good chance of being elected. She skated right through the Benghazi nonsense as I figured. It shows how far this country has slipped when liberalism takes hold and people would vote for someone like her strictly to get free government benefits.

The America we knew where success was paid off by one's initiative and hard work has disappeared. Today, it's "Which way to the freebies?" Liberals have that "cradle to grave" mentality which used to be considered objectionable. It's all about letting others do the work then sit back and collect while the national government taxes the hell out of the producers.

It's sad; I only hope that the real Americans get out and vote her ass out of existence. At the moment, I'm a bit skeptical as the Republicans look like a confused mess but we shall see.

You're right Rick. I can't stand Hillary but at the moment I think she will win. Oh, well, it's the rich she is after, not me. It's sad that this country has slipped so far than she can get elected. I hope I am wrong and she loses.

Jim McAllister said...

The committee was a joke. Just another example of how Repubs waste people's time.

Jimmy, you must remember that it was 1986. It was a different era. My family threw me under the bus after my parents died. The first time I met the Clinton's, they were really friendly. He was just a governor and I was nervous and accidentally called him, "Mr. President."

Here's a video that I made of me playing the electric guitar and the studio, Jimmy. I didn't put any SN' references in it. Everyone knows that she's responsible for the advice. I did all the work and she was right. It's a lot of fun.
