WORLD WAR II AMERICA

(I wrote this for my column in a local paper in November of 2005.  I think it is still appropriate for Veteran's Day, 2013)

Can you imagine today’s “I have to have it!” society being placed in a time machine and being transported back to the dark days of World War II?  With today’s attitude of overbuying and waste how would these people handle the teamwork approach to rationing of major consumer items?  It would be interesting to see their reaction to the rallying call of, “If you don’t need it, don’t buy it!”

With the arrival of war on December 7, 1941 a lot of strain was administered to the pipelines of supply and demand.  The war consumed a lot of goods which threatened to cause shortages on the home front so in the spring of 1942 the rationing of items such as most types of food, gasoline, and even clothing was instituted.  Everybody was affected and the way Americans coped with these inconveniences was a testimony to their strong will.

Clubs were formed to work together to maintain supply channels so that the guys fighting on the fronts could have more.  Scrap drives were organized to provide more metal, paper, and rubber.  Many people removed the bumpers from their cars to help that effort.  Recycling was popular as used cans were a good source for ammunition casings.

 WWII ration stamps
In order to provide more fresh produce for the troops, many families planted “victory gardens.”  Those gardens provided families with produce so that normal supplies could benefit the soldiers.  It’s estimated that there were over 20 million victory gardens planted on private property providing 40% of America’s produce.  War bonds were sold as a source used to provide funds for the war.  Hollywood played a big part in the sale of bonds as stars entertained around the country to solicit sales.

Rationing was handled through the use of “War Ration Books” that contained stamps used to buy various items like food, gasoline, and tires.  It was a dizzying experience to control but few complained.  The America of the wartime 1940’s had a teamwork discipline.  A common slogan of the time was “Do with less so they will have enough!”

One negative aspect of all this patriotism was the appearance of the “black market.”  By utilizing the black market a person could buy a lot of items that were in short supply even though they would have to pay inflated prices.  It was annoying to those who worked hard to conserve but it still existed to supply those who could afford it.

So there it was:  wartime America.  As always, this country faced up to adversity and made it through.  Although World War II ended in 1945, prosperity was returning by the late 1940’s and the Depression of the 1930’s became just a bad memory.  More women were entering the workplace while the invention of television was making its way into the living rooms of America while sending a chill down the spine of Hollywood.

The 1950’s followed and offered a different set of problems and successes.  However, the world war was over and our guys were home with some getting ready to pack for Korea.  More on that some other time.

In my mom's stuff that I avoid opening I think I remember seeing some rations cards, So if WWII got us out of the First Depression then why was there still shortages after the war? and why was the first house my mom and dad lived in an abandoned internment camp house?

That Victory Garden was just another pep rally based ad campaign by the Defense dept. the same one that green lighted wasting tax money funding the video Hemp for Victory!:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p52Epx6lJes..

And then twenty years later making hemp a felony ruining the futures of half of American kids for no good reason and what's worse immorally justifying the continued wasting of our tax money for building the modern day police state.
Cognitive Dissonance?- seconds anyone??

These are the same guys that used the truth found in "Reefer Madness" to base an expensive war on drugs campaign that has done nothing positive for the nation..
We allow our CIA to set proxy figureheads like Gadaffi or the Shah of Iran up and we take them down- for what?- I see a pattern.
How about some Syrian War bonds.. lol..

Happy Veteran's Day to all us vets.. one thing is for sure this nation will never run out of war vets.

Jim,

Very nice piece, and very good observations. I was really taken back yesterday as the cover Article ‘One More Mission For The Greatest Generation’ in the Republic by Kristina Goetz was outstanding, respectful and should be mandatory reading for each classroom in our country.

It was also nice in last week’s news that aside from having guys returning from Afghanistan to be greeted with applause and honor, but to have the Airline upgrade 9 of the group and the other 7 having already upgraded First Class travelers surrender their seats so they could all travel together, there is hope for us!

That all good things must be balanced out ESPN’s Blackistone has to come out and complain about The Star Spangled Banner being played at sporting events, sad, but as with Bob Costas an un-important man searching for relevance, and showing his ignorance as to what this represents.

Again thanks, enjoy your day, as I know you are a Vet as well, and thank you for your service to our Country.

Good idea Mike to take the early SS, may as well chip in for some gas money for Thelma and Louise- I did the same and didn't lose a moment's sleep over it.

As far as people doing like you said they had to during WWII “If you don’t need it, don’t buy it!” - I think that's a no starter.

People don't want the concept of saving to buy things, and remember the credit card has only been around since the late sixties.

The nation today is addicted to the most damaging drug ever devised- easy, debt created currency.
It has destroyed cultures before us and it will continue to do the same every time it gets the chance.

Take a look at the charts of revolving vs fixed debt the past few decades and you will see what I am talking about.

I wasn't going to bring that subject up.. I was lucky, my mom and dad lived in a military town so they didn't get the anti Vietnam war treatment some of the other families did.
I just started telling people I was in jail, avoided a lot of arguments.

America has changed for the better in some ways I guess, at least we don't call them baby killers anymore.

Jim,

The rationing Americans experienced during WW II paled by comparison with what the Brits endured. I can attest I never missed a full meal right up until the army grabbed me just as the fighting ended in 1945.

In Churchill’s memorable account of WW II, he expressed concern about the possible need to ration ice cream in 1943. He hoped America would supply our troops stationed in GB with our own supply. We had to lick a cone before we could lick the enemy.

Cigarettes became scarce at times. When a supply hit Hoboken, folks lined up to buy as many cartons as possible, any brand. Things got so bad I was willing to “Walk a Mile for a Camel.”

That War was Hell!

Middy,

Surprisingly the editorial in the Republic today is critical of the medical marijuana law in AZ. It says that too many 18 to 30 year olds are getting dope that way to make it a "for medical reasons" only situation.

No Kidding! I couldn't believe it when they passed the damn thing. Also, Colorado and another state want to pass a law allowing dope to be smoked just for recreational reasons.

So much for marijuana being a big secret behind the scenes deal. Remember the MJ raids?

To me, it is just human nature for some people to go nuts with the damn things and have no intention of ever paying them off. After all, they feel that they are "entitled". BO will handle it for them!

The worst part is that they are encouraged to do it. After all, someone else will eventually pay for it!

..anyone believing that crap deserves what they get.

I suggest people inform themselves before drawing conclusions, that is unless you support the war on drugs and the accompanying expensive prison cartel that was created to support it.

.."Agents working in the western Arizona desert early Saturday recovered more than 1,900 pounds of pot worth $961,000. Agents also arrested three Mexican nationals suspected of smuggling narcotics, a Border Patrol news release says.
Sunday night, Casa Grande agents seized 16 backpack bundles of marijuana weighing more than 800 pounds with an estimated worth of $436,000.
Early Monday, Ajo agents seized a total of 1,600 pounds of marijuana. A Jeep Grand Cherokee was found abandoned in a remote western Arizona desert area with 86 bundles of marijuana weighing 1,093 pounds. The narcotics, worth an estimated $546,500, and the Jeep were seized.
Another 524 pounds of pot was dumped off by smugglers and recovered. It’s worth approximately $262,000".

This is from one weekend this January and they claim they catch less than ten percent..

http://azstarnet.com/news/local/border/m-in-marijuana-seized-in-arizona/article_f681b274-46cd-11e1-82bb-0019bb2963f4.html

A week later after they had broken the back of the smugglers.

.."This was evidenced at a news conference Tuesday where U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officials showed the 7 tons of marijuana seized Jan. 15 at a commercial truck crossing point. It was at the Mariposa port of entry on the U.S.-Mexico border in Nogales, Ariz.
The 600 bales of pot were wrapped in plastic with each bale weighing between 25 and 30 pounds. The pot packaged in this manner is so that mules can bring it across the border on foot in backpacks. With the marked reduction in illegal crossers, it appears the Sinaloa cartel is resorting to a riskier means of moving their product.
A movement of this size is almost always discovered and seized, unless of course, one of our corrupt border agents is there to help move it through the commercial lanes.
In all, authorities say the marijuana found hidden in a tractor trailer weighed more than 14,000 pounds"..

That was my very point Jim, tobacco is far more deadly but what has been their position so far? and what business does the Federal Government have in dealing with the parenting problem to begin with?- show me in the Constitution.
I suggest you ask that idiot at the Arizona Republic "Are kids getting smokes, liquor or bringing guns to class for show and tell from their parents"?

The CIA is the major trafficker for cocaine and heroin, the Pharmaceutical industry is the exclusive, protected supplier for Oxy and Paxil.
Crack is a direct result of cocaine being too expensive for the ghetto crowd, Mexican tar and the White Horse is the real threat to schools today and that is directly attributable to it's being a less expensive commodity to the youth- tar sells for ten bucks a hit, weed is expensive.

God only knows what agent orange type herbicides our government is spraying on the crops that get harvested anyway and shipped south.

So what is the answer?
..same answer for fixing government altogether, getting them out of the equation.

While I have my soapbox out why are humans allowed to drive two ton killing machines on the highways at 16, able to buy and smoke tobacco at 18, put your life on the line for the nation as well as vote, at 21 they are considered as adult enough to buy liquor yet are in the eyes of the IRS children until 26?

Going to need more than two hands for that level of cognitive dissonance.

Oxy, Paxil, Crack, Heroin, Big alcohol, police state, being punked by real criminals in prison... or marijuana- which is the real threat to our youth?
..the hysteria is maddening.

My brother died from a drunk driver, my dad alcohol killed, I had an uncle who committed suicide while on medications yet I have no one in my family that has died or suffered any damage from the weed.. how should I or any other thinking person look at the issue?

Here's a hint, follow the money trail.
Lots of bastards like Big Alcohol and Big Incarceration are lining their pockets with prohibition generated found money today, and they aren't going to let go without a fight.

Ignore my diatribes, I walk alone.

.." since 1993 there has been a federal law requiring states to recover at least some of the costs of Medicaid-covered medical care for anyone 55 years old and up, from the estates of those covered.

States enforce this law, with their own laws and policies added in, differently in every state. But the general principle is there. Up until now the usual consequence has been things like this: Medicaid puts a lien on the house of someone in a nursing facility who has run out of money, and after they die, the heirs find they have to buy the house back from the state if they want it.

We haven't had lots of people younger than 65 on Medicaid, because in most states simply earning less than the Federal Poverty Level did not qualify one for Medicaid.

And we haven't had many people with lots of assets on Medicaid, because in most places you have to have less than around $2400 to your name before Medicaid will cover you. You can keep your house and your car, but Medicaid reserves the right to put liens on them and take them when you die.

But now we have the Affordable Care Act, and its expectation that everyone in the lower tier of income will end up in the Medicaid system. To accomplish this, they have dropped the asset test. So now we will have lots of people ages 55-64, who have assets but not a lot of income right now, for whatever reason, on Medicaid.

The kicker of it is, if you make the right amount to qualify for a subsidized health insurance plan, your costs are going to be shared and subsidized by the government. But if you go on Medicaid, you owe the entire amount that Medicaid spends on you from the day you turn 55"..

Well it didn't take the pinko's at the Telegraph long to jump another shark in their ongoing war against reason.

The go on to describe the Philippines as about the same some east coast weenie describes Arizona, except half the citizens over there are muslim and actually do shoot up the place.
..absolute wankers, every one of them.

I agree on the Coyotes. The first period looked like they would run St L. out of the building. Then it was hang on for dear life the next two periods.

Ekman-Larson couldn't have picked a better time for that OT goal. Great win over a good team.

I think the actual situation was when Clinton and Kennedy were checking in to a hotel at some convention, BO walked by and Clinton said "There was a time when he would have been carrying our bags."

Same basic story and a real put down on Obama. I love it that Clinton is schooling the asshole. I read tonight where Obama supposedly agrees with Clinton on honoring the insurance.

That sounds a bit odd; we know how much that guy likes advice.

Yeah.. normally when I see either of those asshatt's picture I just keep moving.

Eventually ZerO is going to realize that dirty Bill Clinton is feeding off him like a death star while Democrats who see their political futures going up in smoke are treating him like Plutonium, just look at today's optics, weak, ineffectual Obama a mess and Bill looking all presidential.. Meanwhile the natives are getting restless- so to speak, what a farce.

Bill Shakespeare would have had a field day with this crowd.

I stole this from a comment in a column on the internet. Makes sense to me!....

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old rancher, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man.

Eventually the topic got around to
Obama and his role as our president. The old rancher said, 'Well, ya know, Obama is a "Post Turtle".

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him, what a 'post turtle' was. The old rancher said, 'When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a 'post turtle'.

The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so he continued to explain: "You know he didn't get up there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, he doesn't know what to do while he's up there, he's elevated beyond his ability to function, and you just wonder what kind of dumb #$%$ put him up there to begin with."

Love the Obama-Orwell comparison.

Too bad Orwell is dead; it would be interesting to get his take on Obama now.

Great YouTube of Ekman-Larsson getting that winner.

Thanks for sending; we missed it because I switched channels for a few minutes thinking there would be more time between periods. Oops!

Jim, I think the guy you stole it from stole it from someone else too. LOL
My uncle emailed it to me a while ago. pretty funny though.

Buzz,

I saw that on a blog comment and just had to use it since it is so appropriate. I there wasn't an accreditation so i figured "What eh hell; it's a good one so I'll use it anyway."

Especially since it fits Obama so well!

.. that chart is a lot easier to use if you slam a couple of back to back doubles first.
Better yet, just neaten up the whole bottle and chew on the cork.

Guess who gets stuck for the entire bill and penalties on this FUBAR?

I believe intentional malicious fraud at this level rises to the definition of High Crimes and Misdemeanors- don't you?- and if it is decided to be fraud then any wrongful deaths because of it could be considered as reason for a special grand jury and criminal proceedings at a state level.
How about the State of Arizona representing the deceased don Williams vs. Barrrrak O'bama for wrongful death by death panel?

I could go for that.

It's amazing how you can rearrange letters into different words and sometimes come up with the same meanings.

..Republicans in the House of Representatives plan to introduce articles of impeachment against Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday, in the hopes of removing a cabinet member they say has lied to Congress as well as failed to uphold federal law.

"This was not a decision that I made lightly. Since the House voted in 2012 to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt, the pattern of disregard for the rule of law and refusal to be forthright has only continued," Texas Representative Pete Olson, who drafted the articles, said in a statement provided to Reuters on Wednesday.

"The American people deserve answers and accountability. If the attorney general refuses to provide answers, then Congress must take action."..

Well, well.. what? someone in Congress finally going to try the only thing they haven't yet?

Middy,

How would you like to have the administrative responsibilities of changing this crappola? Now, those cancellations will have to be reviewed, mail sent, lots of overtime, etc.

It will be a logistical nightmare but, what the hell, now that he has made his announcement, I'm sure he'll still make his 1:00 tee time this afternoon. Someone else can handle the "busy work."

This country was running pretty smooth before this joker. I don't think this is over just because he gave individuals another year. Even the Dems are pissed.

Some guys have to learn the hard way that this is a capitalist country.

Mike said...

Jim, I listened to Obummer this morning. He said he's doing everything in his power to fix this mess. You can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig.

The Democrats own this pig. I just hope the Republicans don't try to help fix it.

midnightsstaff said...

..think of it as a bank robbery and all the money has been spent already.
No.. people will die and that's fine with him, it is part of the plan all along.

Remember when he told John Boneless..
"I don't have a spending problem"..

He doesn't have a medical problem either- America does and that's just the way it works- Slaves always take it or suffer the consequences- the next offer will be Medicaid for the masses, just like it was intended as step two five years ago.
is it one yet?

Obama addresses the nation today; coverage of the event will be on Mystery 3000 Theater.

Rumor that Duckman himself will head the investigation into what has happened was leaked by the Vice President to certain select sympathetic reporters at the traditional whine and cheese tasting reception following the press release.

..Two shots ought to do it" was reportedly overheard in the conversation but it was unclear what exactly he was talking about.

Stevebuzzardo said...

All I can say is, that this is all very entertaining.
I'm laughing my ass off listening to these Obamalovers still trying to defend the idiot.
It's hilarious that Odumbass comes out everyday with a new explanation for this fiasco. LOL

Mike,

It doesn't matter how smart a phony is or how long he can fool the public, the day always comes when he can't avoid being exposed and that day was today in Obama's case.

Even now he is dictating what is going to happen totally disregarding the power of Congress in this mess.

Just like I mentioned in the previous blog about "The Candidate" when Redford said "What do we do now?"

Jim McAllister said...

Two shots ought to do it? LOL

Jim McAllister said...

Buzz,

I haven't talked to many people about it but I have been listening to KTAR and the guys on there are having a field day.

He may as well resign; he is toast for the rest of his term. He thought he was soooooo smart and wouldn't listen to anyone on this. The chickens have come back to roost.

Sorry, Obummer!

Jim McAllister said...

ANON,

Hang on to it. You may need it yet!

Mike said...

Jim, when Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton are critical of Obama that says a lot. Obama has always been in over his head and has never been ready for prime time.

Hopefully next year the Republicans will keep the house and take the senate then ignore that dumb ass for 2 years.

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

Yeah, I love it that Carter and Clinton, especially Clinton, are nailing Obama.

According to the vote on the Upton Bill this morning, 39 Dems are deserting the guy too. They may as well if they want any chance of re-election to their soft jobs in Congress.

Sometimes I wonder if O even knows Congress exists the way way he keeps issuing his executive orders. He think of himself more as a king than a president.

It's an embarrassment that the guy was ever elected; especially since no one bothered to even look into his past.

Maybe someday the truth will unfold that he never was a citizen.

Gotta laugh at the irony- most decent people when they need some advice go to who they consider a mentor at least if not an authority on the subject.

So where does the Lord of Flies go for advice?- why to the Dean of Prevarication and darling of the Left.. Kingfish Bubba hizself..

Turd O'bama goes to the only living president to ever be threatened with impeachment, have charges drawn and get off on a technicality (Democrat Senate).

This rank amateur is getting fisted by irony.

midnightsstaff said...

Oh yeah.. Upton.. he's that empty sack that was all about the incandescent light bulb ban.. now I remember- he needs to be strung up along with the rest.

.."Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), railing against the Upton bill on the floor before the vote, accused it of doing “violence” to Obamacare.

“The idea that it was helping consumers was the Trojan horse whose underbelly is poisonous in terms of the health and well-being of the American people,” Pelosi said"..

she railed on..

..“The stories are so glorious and so beautiful about what a difference the Affordable Care Act has made to families, especially those with small children or those with pre-existing conditions, and to seniors,” Pelosi said, encouraging legislation that gave state insurance commissioners authority to “investigate and act upon rate increases as well as the nature of these letters that were sent out without the integrity that they should have had"..

I may hurl.

midnightsstaff said...

..“Enough with the administrative fixes and sidestepping of Congress, this train wreck has already left the station and we must replace this big, bad, unworkable law with a free-market system,” said Rep. Matt Salmon (R-Ariz.). “There is a better way to healthcare reform that doesn’t include burdensome mandates, broken promises, IRS oversight, and more uninsured Americans.”

Election season is on us.

midnightsstaff said...

I think we can safely say that NegroCare isn't ever going to get off the ground, and the idiot is threatening to veto anything coming to his desk.
And now he suggests America ignore his own law by putting it's mandated inception off another year?

Anything to keep the conversation off Bengazi.

friday nite joke.. (hide the kids)

.."One day a man with a pet monkey walks into a bar. The monkey begins eating everything in site. The Peanuts, The olives out the drinks, the limes in the beer. Finally the monkey jumps up on pool table and swallows the cue ball whole. "Holy crap" the bartender exclaims, "is he always doing things like that?" "Yeah he'll eat just about everything he see's" replies the owner. A few weeks later the man with the pet monkey is back in the bar. This time the monkey grabs a cherry shoves it up his behind pulls it out then eats. "MY GOD THAT WAS DISGUSTING!!" shouts the bartender. "Yeah" replies the man. "He still eats everything in sight but after that cue ball he measures them first"..

Here is a great conservative local blogsite that many of you should enjoy.

It's called "Seeing Red" and is very interesting. Recent comments include the new White House rule that they will be releasing information as they please now without dealing with the press as before. Transparency? I don't think so!

A good piece about Oprah's recent mouthing off too. It's funny how since she has her millions, the truth finally comes out about her racist feelings.
