POTPOURRI IN 500 WORDS

Merry Christmas from the Obama Economy. (left)

Are school officials wimps?  Maybe not in today’s vocabulary but calling off the high school football games in the Phoenix area over the weekend reeks of that word.  Why the cancellations?  The reason given was the fields were too wet.  I’m sorry, but isn’t this football?  Maybe they should start wearing skirts too.  It’s another example of the coddled society we have become…..Flash!  Lindsay Lohan tells Oprah that she is cured of her drug habit.  She has been nailed six times for that rap so is she really cured?  Keep watching “People” magazine to see.  What a twosome:  Oprah is a two faced phony now that she has her millions and Lindsay is a drug head.   Fortunately, the interview was on Oprah’s TV network so no one watched it anyway…..A lady recently wrote a funny letter to the Republic claiming her pride in being a “wacko bird in a country crowded with leftists.”  One example she gave was how the lefties feel the right should be more compassionate and not demand such high standards from school kids.  Well, the left owns the public schools so don’t be surprised when you see grads who “can’t make change, can’t read, and don’t know a thing about the history of our country.”  The lady makes sense; just ask some recent grads some simple questions….. Here is my beef against the public school system:  There are 1,500 third grade kids in Arizona who can’t read properly.  That number does not include new language learners.  How did the 1,500 make it to third grade without reading comprehension? I’m no genius but when I was in grade school I knew how to read effectively after the FIRST GRADE as did most of my class.  Are teachers so compassionate and worried about feelings that they let unqualified kids pass?…..It amazes me that people in the workplace have to be given advice about manners that seem so elementary.  Anna Post is a descendent of the queen of manners, Emily Post (1872-1960) and she knows all there is to know about proper etiquette in the workplace.  Some of her advice seems like common sense but in today’s work environment I guess it is a necessity.  For example, one should stand up when shaking hands with someone.  Also, never text or tweet during a meeting and never answer your cell phone while in a conversation with another person.  It is a glaring sign of disrespect…..  From my experience as a salesman for twenty years, I would add that when making a sales call always dress properly and never mispronounce the buyer’s name…..The Phoenix Suns are doing better than expected but they lack players with the pizzazz the team had when Charles Barkley was playing for them in the 1990’s.  The reporters loved Charles who always had a great line when they needed something to boost a column.  Charles was once asked if the shoes he endorsed were comfortable.  In true Barkley fashion he answered:  “Anytime somebody pays you $2 million to wear something, they’re going to be comfortable.”  Go Charles!

Good vent, Jim. I can identify/agree with all of it.

It surprised me to learn that a muddy field caused officials to cancel a high school playoff football game. At a very young age, I played tackle football on paved streets with my Hoboken cadre, wearing the latest protective garments. We stuffed newspaper inside our clothing to cushion the crashes. However, given the current state of my brain, perhaps my mama should have whistled the play dead.

Mike said...

Jim, I'm ashamed to say this but two of my grandkids play soccer. Their playoff games were cancelled last weekend. The powers that be decided there won't be a champ this year and ended the season.

As far as the public education system the liberals don't think it's PC to hold a child back just because they can't read. Besides they look at those kids that aren't very smart as future Democrat voters.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU & BARB!!

....the Suns in the 90s....their hay days...remember Tom Chamberlain, EJ(Eddie Johnson), KJ(Kevin Johnson), and Socks(Elliot Perry) who next to Barkley looked like his son...and don't forget Hornacek and Dan Majerle...and of course Cotton Fitzsimmons with assistants Scotty Robertson and Lionel Hollins ....with many of the those games at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

I miss those 1990s on this Thanksgiving 2013.

Thanks for reminding me.

I think maybe the officials are reflecting the values of the overall public Jim.

We no longer have a society that remembers that Sunday chicken comes from a pen behind the barn, milk from dairy cattle or vegetables grown in the garden.

Today we live in a nation of children demanding life reflect their values instead of them adjusting- sports included.

.."want that order supersized?"..

LoL at the lay away accepted sign at the Dollar Store- try to get that deal at the swap meet.

Happy Thanksgiving to you Rick, at least one of us here misses your daily/hourly input; after all you and your thinking reflected the thoughts of a large segment of society in this nation.haha.

Curling match on tv in Minn. tonight Jim, Rusty Kesla was released yesterday and no one yet knows why..

Hi Jim,

Happy Thanksgiving to you and Barb! Why are you saying welcome back to Lynda and then say she is still enjoying the Caribbean? Just wondering!!.. Your articles are always "right on". About students..a sales girl asked me how to spell my last name, so i said, "Just like it sounds". She then wrote down YZMIN. Case in point.

Joy Wiseman

Jim McAllister said...

Thanks, Randy.

Same for you.

Jim McAllister said...

Hi Joy,

Happy Thanksgiving to you and Ray too.

The "Lynda" reference was to Lynda Zollinger who was one of my first bloggers in 2006 when I was doing the blog through the Republic on AZ Central. There were about twelve of us writing and there was a lot of activity but eventually some participants got too nasty and they discontinued the program.

Lynda is a great lady who lost her young daughter in 2007 and shortly after her husband accepted a job in the Caribbean. They and their other kids moved there. Last year they were supposedly moving to Bahrain but wound up staying in the Caribbean so there was a mix up on email addresses. However, now she is back.

I'm still laughing at the YZMIN reference. You must not have had on your muslim scarf that day! LOL That is a perfect example of what I was talking about with young people today. Either they don't care, have no common sense, or they are just dumb.

I was at a McDonald's a couple years ago and the cashier had to call the manager when I gave her a fifty cent piece. He looked at it and although a bit suspicious himself, decided to take it. Should we even discuss what usually happens if you give them something like $5.25 to pay for a check of $1.25? It's almost worth the humor to watch them squirm over what the .25 is all about.

Thanks for the nice words about the columns. This is a great era for writing; lots of silliness to discuss.

Jim McAllister said...

Hi Joe,

Like you, I sat through many a game in high school while the rain pelted down.

Games were played regardless of weather. It affected both teams the same. We always had plastic covers to hold over us if it was too hard a rain. I think the teams would have been embarrassed to say the game was postponed because of rain.

I'm reminded of Tom Hanks' comment in "A League of their Own" when he said "There's no crying in baseball." I would paraphrase it to "There are no postponements for rain in football."

We played many a game in the street but never tackle! You Depression guy were a lot tougher than we were!"

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

You have to be kidding! Although soccer is a suck sport, the least the league could have done was just postpone the game so the kids could have at least had a championship game.

If nothing else, it's a good time to educate the kids on how soccer should be abandoned for something more gratifying but they will have to jump up a few notches. I think marbles is just ahead of soccer in importance. Tell them Football or baseball is much better.

I agree. All they need for an example is Obama: he is the number one Dem and one of the dumbest asses in the country. The list never ends and he now has Obamacare and Iran to add to his screw ups. If he didn't give everyone the doorknobs, he would be out in one minute. I just hope America realizes that in 2014.

Jim McAllister said...

Happy Thanksgiving to you and Lana, Rick.

Jim McAllister said...

AZ Dave,

Yeah, Dave, those were fun teams the Suns had in the 1990's.

I saw Chambers in a Safeway store a few years ago when the Suns had a big game coming up and told him I wished he could lace 'em up that night and play. He seemed very appreciative and said he wished he could.

He and Tom Leander have been doing the pre, 1/2 time, and final game wrap ups for quite a while now and Tom is quite good on TV. He still looks good but like most of us, has plenty of gray hair these days.

Cotton was a great guy. I used to see him at the golf course occasionally in KC and one time he had Bill Russell with him.

Cotton had a nice career at Kansas State in his coaching college years.

Jim McAllister said...

Middy,

I agree, the kids should have raised some hell about it but not a peep. At least if they bitched, the schools would have at least known their attitude.

That's surprising about Kesla getting cut. It looked like he was getting a lot of ice time.

I guess Tippett didn't like him or else he did something objectionable off the ice.

Mike said...

Jim, I agree with you on soccer. I never would have allowed my kids to play soccer.

My son played Pop Warner from the time he was 10 until High School and 4 years of High School football. Our daughter played 4 years of High School softball.

Why our daughter lets her kids play soccer is beyond me.

Hope you and Barb have a nice Thanksgiving.

midnightsstaff said...

The curling match was canceled and they played hockey instead.
Guess that explains why Klesla got sent down, motivation.. Moss, #18 definitely got the message along with a lot of other riders.
Power move from management, plus we got to see Connor Murphy and I think he is going to stay, the kid looks like he has been doing this for years, he is pretty composed- and he follows orders.

I don't know when there are tornadoes or hellacious hale maybe that is a good time to postpone a game, but I have no use for the NFL anymore and don't miss it a bit- rain delay... really?
Tell that to the fans at the ice bowl.

The NHL program is a lot better run and not infested with gangsters- that game tonight was as physical as I have seen lately.
Hockey is still a contact sport and appreciated for that aspect- it's written into the rules.

Jim McAllister said...

Thanks, Mike.

Have a great Thanksgiving also.

Whenever I think of kids playing soccer I think of those liberal idiots running the leagues who insist that kids shouldn't have to win or lose because it may affect their self esteem. Therefore, EVERYONE gets a trophy.

To that I say Bulls--t! Liberals never want to admit that there are winners and losers in life. For the biggest loser of all, just look at the White House impostor.

He was busy today on the radio patting himself on the back for what a great job he is doing.

Unfortunately, Fact check showed he is wrong on about everything.

Jim McAllister said...

Middy,

They looked really good tonight. Greiss was especially impressive. I'll bet Smith is looking over his shoulder worrying a bit.

Good tight game, few mistakes and a big win after the last few unimpressive starts.

midnightsstaff said...

Same as always, but there was a Tippet system in full force tonight, I have learned to completely trust in whatever Dave Tippet or Don Maloney does, they are always thinking two steps ahead of the rest of us.

I may be wrong but I think Rusty was sent down to first send a message and let him take fewer minutes, heal up some and try to get his game back in order if there is nothing else off ice we don't know about. They evidently knew there was a good chance no other team could pick him up at the moment.

..Never buy a horse from these guys.

Jim McAllister said...

Apparently he cleared waivers easily and now is playing in front of the Portland fans. I hope he likes playing in that liberal bastion of a city.

After spending some time there, he'll probably come back here with a vengeance vowing to never be sent down again.

I like the "horse" comment.

midnightsstaff said...

Not to bore the non hockey types but he is on his last year and goes free this summer anyway.

If he can get his game back I see him as a deadline trade in a couple of months.

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving to all, be careful on the highways, at least we have decent weather unlike the East coast.

Stevebuzzardo said...

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Jim McAllister said...

Thanks, Buzz.

Ditto to everyone.

Mike said...

It seems a segment of the non hockey types are a little upset with channel 3. The hockey games are interfering with watching their game shows. I got an earful from my 84 year old mother wanting to know why her game show was not on.

Maybe the hockey games should be moved to a channel that no one ever watches like TLC or MSNBC.

Don't want the game show watchers upset. It could get ugly.

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

I can see their anger. Channel 3 is a local station not even affiliated with a network. I think they used to be ABC. I would be angry too if I was your mom

Hockey is usually on Fox Sports and there is also a Fox Sports One and NBC Sports which has shown some of their games.

I'm sure they have their reasons for what they do but upsetting regular watchers can't be a very good idea.

Mike said...

Jim, I can understand there frustration. I feel the same way when listening to the radio or watching TV and it's interrupted by Obama.

midnightsstaff said...

Actually it's a strategy to get the eighty four year old crowd to take up watching hockey..
Problem is that is after hours and many have already called it a night.

The Coyotes just signed a twelve year deal with FuzzyFoxSports and after this year won't be seen anywhere near ch3 again.
..tell her to just hang in there another year.

..my mom loved hockey and watched every Coyote game..

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

Who is Obama? The name kind of rings a bell; something about some unqualified guy posing as a United States president.

It must be a fictional TV show; that sort of thing couldn't happen here.

Mike said...

Middy, I'm in my prime and I don't watch hockey. In fact if I had a choice between watching hockey or my wife's HGTV I think I'd rather walk on hot coals. It would be more fun.

Big college football rivalries this Saturday. Got the beer chilling already.

Jim, I think Obama is the guy that said if you like your healthcare you can keep it and if you like your doctor you can keep him/her.

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

He's the guy. Gee, what a shock that he is a liar.

The good news is that America knows it. Now he is shoving his Obamacare crap back a year for businesses under 50 employees.

The whole mess should be cancelled and written off as what happens when an ignorant novice becomes president and has a Democratic congress backing him all the way.

If the Dems take over in 2016 I will lose all faith in this country.

midnightsstaff said...

Prime beef eh?

Well the coals can be arranged easily enough and I'm sure it would get an audience but I think we could just leave HGTV out of the conversation, there are limits to things like that and other mysteries man has struggled with like.. why women have such a herd mentality when going to a restroom?... ..questions best left unanswered.

Men simply cannot, nor should they even try to understand some things.

I give you Oprah as exhibit #1..
as don williams used to say "nuff said"..
frickin' brilliance that was.

midnightsstaff said...

You seem to think these guys have if not respect for the law at least some fear of it, that has been proved beyond a shadow of a doubt to be illusion- they aren't going to take the foot off the neck now that they have gone this far.
Politics as any solution to the moral rot this nation suffers is fata morgana.

The damage has been done and it wasn't all ObamaCare, this is just the straw that will break the back, our currency has been deliberately devalued at the highest position.
The relative calm we are now witnessing is just the calm as the engines shut down while the band plays on..

Actually I admire the Oklahoma State program a lot more now, they actually expect the student athletes to go to class and learn something.
..gotta admire that attitude as well as the excellent program they have built.
Hey the weekend after this one is the Bedlam Bowl.. guess I will watch that one.

LoL.. just checked Yahoo sports and they suspended one of the Sooner players.. haha some things never gonna change.

Middy,

Caught some MD interviews on Fox this A. M. Those guys are not happy.

I think that other than having a failure of a system and pissing everyone off with lousy service and higher costs, this will mainly fail because younger people will not participate in the numbers they need.

Think about it: Did you have regular physical checkups when you were in the 18-32 age group? Most of us didn't because we wanted to use our money on beer, cars, and women instead of paying doctors plus we were young and didn't even think about illness.

I was 20-24 during my AF years and I never went to sick call unless I had an injury. It's the wonderful advantage of youth and I don't see young people wanting to pay to heal the old which is exactly what Barry has to have.

midnightsstaff said...

Yeah the young people are not going to want to work and pay taxes to support a pretty lavish lifestyle us boomers are getting compared to what they are looking at forty years down the hall; especially in the coming economic downturn.

It wouldn't be the first time a political scapegoat has been created- it will probably hyperbolically steepen the "normal death panel process" as a side benefit, it's what liberals call a "win/win"..

I see the Cardinals got beat today by a former U of A quarterback. They're 6 and 5 now. Guess we won't have to hear anymore talk of making the playoffs.

Sad to see what's happening to the Korean War Vet. If Truman had left MacArthur along to win the war there wouldn't be a North Korea today.

Well I take it as a positive sign but according to the AP-

.."You can take our word for it. Americans don't trust each other anymore.

We're not talking about the loss of faith in big institutions such as the government, the church or Wall Street, which fluctuates with events. For four decades, a gut-level ingredient of democracy - trust in the other fellow - has been quietly draining away.

These days, only one-third of Americans say most people can be trusted. Half felt that way in 1972, when the General Social Survey first asked the question.

Forty years later, a record high of nearly two-thirds say you can't be "too careful" in dealing with people"..

The fish rots from the head back..
I remember Ronald Reagan and his unflappable faith in the American people, but he had something to work with back then.
Today I wonder if he would express the same degree of faith in this unruly mob.

Middy,

Funny about the CNN story. Obama keeps saying the site is working great. Unfortunately even his own stooges at places like CNN and MSNBC can't get in and aren't afraid to tell us.

Post January 1 will be interesting.

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

Yeah, just one of three field goals would have got Alabama past Auburn, another less talented college team.

It's the old woulda, coulda, shoulda stuff. I'm sorry, but it would have taken more than that field goal to get them past a pro team.

The Cards are 7-5 now, not 6-5. Not that it matters. Four games to go. I see them at 9-7 or 8-8. With their schedule of St. Louis and Tennessee coming up they should be able to go 2-2. They'll probably lose to SF and Seattle.

Jim McAllister said...

Middy,

No trust is correct in this society when someone would think nothing of robbing you if the front door was open.

Remember when neighbors took care of each other and helped one another? Seems like a long time ago.

Sadly, we all carry now; no one is trusted and we are locked and loaded.

Jim McAllister said...

Middy, I love that guy. He has Obama sized up perfectly. He covers it perfectly in 46 seconds.

I still can't understand the Nobel Prize; it went way down my list of importance after that SOB won it.

Mike said...

Jim, my bad I mistyped. In college football losing a game this late in the season kills any chance of going to the championship game. Alabama had their changes to win but didn't.

Alabama has 3 championships in the last 4 years and the quarterback has only lost 3 times in 4 years. Not a bad record. Pro quarterbacks can't claim that.

I was looking at the NFL standings today and only 13 of the 32 teams have a winning record.

midnightsstaff said...

Yeah Alabama stepped on Ole Miss, Georgia State, Kentucky, Arkansas Miss, Chattanooga, Colorado State on their way to a pretty good season..

They played probably four Div.1 schools in the process, losing to one of them and had no defense to speak of..
However, that is the beauty of college games you get those 52-0, 48-7 and 45-3 nail biters tossed right in with 52-47 national championship games.
They simply would lose to a vintage defense that included Joe Green and LC Greenwood.. those two would have taken home souvenir body parts..
..but that was another era.

I have to admit that most of the time college players seem to wrap up better than the NFL hit men, for some reason they forget the fundamentals.

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

Middy pretty much covers it. Playing Georgia State and Chattanooga is not like playing Seattle and Denver.

It's just a different game, it's more or less wide open offenses and lots of scoring.. hokkeey on de udder hand is more my type of action..

Pretty soon it's gonna look like the Jetson's except for no one is driving the car and most of them are either spying, bringing us something we don't really need or firing on us.

Wait until one of the retrained fast food min. wage workers since turned drone pilot takes out some wife of a Scottsdale lawyer's poodle with a four pound mistaken delivery from fifty feet..

From our "Can't Make This Stuff Up Department Comes This:

According to President Obama, the private sector was doing such a lousy job administering health insurance that the Federal Government HAD to get involved.

They did, and predictably...Things went from bad, to WORSE

Yesterday they made this ironic announcement:

The hand picked team in charge of fixing the disastrous Obamacare program actually bragged that (get this) They now have healthhcare.gov operating with... "private sector velocity & effectiveness"

Gee that's SWELL! Way to go big government. It only took 3-1/2 years and about $1 billion TAXPAYER DOLLARS to get things back where they were...

(Well, except for that pesky little fact that most people NOW PAY HIGHER PREMIUMS)

Evidently the government is on a honor system when it comes to building in security to the new "improved" website to register yourself as incompetent.

The Coyotes luckily get to play the "Edmonton Slump Busters" tonight in Edmonton.. no Bryz in net tho.. something about a ringing in his head.. and the 7:30 start time..???

Jim and Middy, unlike the NFL college schedules are made up years in advance. Lots of teams schedule an Alabama or a Michigan or any other big college power for the money.

The Cardinals played Tampa Bay and Houston, hardly great teams.

If I want to see a good fight I'll watch boxing.

Jim McAllister said...

Middy,

You're right; college and pro football are two different games.

You're also right about L. C. Greenwood and Mean Joe Greene. I can see the look on the face of a college quarterback looking into the eyes of those guys on the other side of the line.

He would drop a five splasher in his pants!

Jim McAllister said...

Here is a shocker. As we previously discussed it looks like the youth insurance buyers who they desperately need for O-Care are not buying the insurance.

It seems that money for cars, dates, motor cycles, iPads come first. Many say they are lucky if they see a doctor once in three years; why should they fork over for something they will not use?

Gee, Barack, didn't you think of that? It was a total no brainer.

BO did have time to tell his uncle that he can stay in the US after all despite his law breaking.

As always, it's not what you know but WHO you know.

Jim McAllister said...

I'm not surprised about Hillary. She is probably being tied into Obama who is a total loser and she would be coat tailing him.

Jim McAllister said...

Good to see you back PROUD. Hope all is well.

Yeah, this whole thing with Obamacare is the greatest thing that could have happened to the Republicans. Now, all we to do is hope they don't screw it up.

It was just a matter of time until Obama screwed up totally and his O-Care was it. He will never live down "If you like your insurance, you can keep it. Period!"

Plus the website is a nightmare and the young are not buying in. The whole mess should be scrapped.

Jim McAllister said...

Mike,

I'm with you on boxing. It sure isn't what it used to be but now and then there is a good match.

midnightsstaff said...

It's simply harder to develop defensive players in most any sport- it takes longer.

So the college programs focus on scoring and let the defense game sort itself out, but it takes longer to develop a defensive minded player because they are reacting instead of running patterns.
..hence we get 52-47 national championship games nearly every year.

Take a look at Matt Leinart, Tim Tebow and Doug Flute- all Heisman trophy winners and none worth a damn in a professional league.

Next Sat. is the Bedlam Bowl.. fun game but meaningless- pretty much what college football mounts up to be.

Middy, you're right that Heisman trophy winning QB's don't do well in the NFL. Carson Palmer is a prime example. Two of the greatest QB's in the NFL didn't win the Heisman, Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw. Montana did win a National championship at Notre Dame but was a third pick, number 82 in the NFL draft.

Bradshaw was a backup QB at Louisianna Tech behind a Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame. Bradshaw was a number 1 pick in the NFL Draft.

They both won 4 Super Bowls.

Funny how the young people that voted for Obama are changing their minds now that they are seeing how much Obummer care is going to cost.

Talked to my sister-in-law in Wolf Point Montana today. Seems the high will be 0. Guess I'll cancel plans for spending Christmas there. Next July sounds better.

midnightsstaff said...

Yeah.. it looks like an early Alberta Clipper forming up, a three wire fence doesn't block much cold wind.
Glad I got living in Montana out of my system when I was young, it was easier to put up with that below zero stuff when your eighteen.

Well mr. stampyfeet says he wants to host sports center when he is done destroying the nation, it really doesn't dawn on him that nearly eighty percent of the nation right now hates his guts and wishes someone would arrest him or worse.

..talk about delusional..

midnightsstaff said...

I would say that the defensive line had something to do with Bradshaw's success, Palmer.. I don't know what to think of that guy..
Aaron Rogers wasn't heavily recruited by any football factory- he's bumbled his way from a walk on junior college player to a pretty good career so far.
I only mention it because at one time he nearly gave it up and was considering going into Law school- now that would have been one of the travesties of my lifetime.
Lots of great ball players end up in State Prison- even OJ..

Yeah, it's collapsing on Barky's head just like it did Hitler when he was planning the invasion of our East coast having to shout over the noise of US and Russian tanks and machine gun fire while rolling through the Motherland.

The racial buttheads who object to blackface in old films need to get a life. Those are great films that were thoroughly enjoyed by blacks and whites.

Way too much sensitivity today. Crosby is not making fun of an old black man; he is impersonating him.
