OVERUSED WORDS AND A SHORT RANT

Is it me or is the word “awesome” becoming the most overused word in the English language?  Everything seems to be “awesome!”  these days.  For those old enough to remember, awesome was also one of the most overused words in the late 1980s.  Occasionally, I also still hear girls say “like” but not as much as I used to thank God.  Then there is the old standby “cool” which has managed to survive many generations from the early 1950s on.  It has outlived Elvis, James Dean, The Beatles, Disco, Michael Jackson, and many others.  Hey, now THAT’s cool!

How much would you pay to see a “no holds barred” fight in the ring between Putin and Obama?  It would be the highest rated event in the history of television and my guess is that more Americans would probably root for Putin if for no other reason than he is a man going against a pseudo-man.  One thing I DO know is that Putin could take the impostor in one round in spite of giving away six inches in height.  Obama is a laughing stock as he has once again reinforced his image as a wimp with the sorry sanctions he levied against some Russian officials.  Can you imagine President Eisenhower being referred to as a “prankster” by government officials in Russia?

Liberals believe in government action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all.  It is the duty of the government to alleviate social ills and to protect civil liberties and individual and human rights.  Believe the role of the government should be to guarantee that no one is in need.  Liberal policies generally emphasize the need for the government to solve problems.

Conservatives believe in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty, traditional American values and a strong national defense.  Believe the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals.  Conservative policies generally emphasize empowerment of the individual to solve problems.

The above definitions of Liberal and Conservative come from the “Student News Daily” and are pretty accurate.  Today, because of many changes in demographics we are seeing the domination of the Liberals.  We have too many addicted to the government dole who have no incentive to leave the cozy confines of government freebies.  They don’t have to think on their own as the government will always be there for them with their handouts.  They love hearing about the possibility of a minimum wage of $10.10 since they don’t have to do anything to earn it.  They are so enamored of that thought that they don’t realize that along with that increase would be lost jobs and higher goods costs which mean higher retail prices.  But, hey!  I got a free phone.

There was a time when the current system would have no chance.  Pride prevented the average person from thinking about government freebies.  There were other organizations like churches that helped the poor get by until they could get back on their feet.  Businesses had more freedoms which allowed them to expand causing more job creation and better benefits for employees.  The bad news for the freebie lovers was that they had to work to get ahead; a very disagreeable requirement for many.  They would rather hear a pseudo president crow about “We want those rich folks to pay more in taxes!”  Tax the makers and give to the takers.  November is coming; cross your fingers that this country wakes up.

Jim, a little trivia for you..what is the most used word in the English language?

How about 'UP'.... I got up this morning and went up to the kitchen after I picked up the newspaper to see what was up...then I drove up to the golf course , teed up my golf ball, picked up my tee, and started walking up the fairway...then threw some grass up in the air to see if the wind was up and picked up my 7 iron to hit the ball up in the air hoping to hit up on the green.

...then I walked up to the clubhouse to see what was up today, so I could use my minimum
up...some one came up to me and said "What's up Dave?"...so I sat up to see who was up by the door....

Jim, are you fed up yet?????

  10. Jim, today's generation has no shame when it comes to sucking off the taxpayers. They feel it's owed to them. The worst part is they get to vote.

I've advocated for years that anyone on the government dole shouldn't be allow to vote. Liberals have bashed me on other blog sites saying I don't care about the poor, children or the disabled. They say I'm selfish and only want to keep my money for myself.

They're right I don't care anymore. I'm sick and tired of paying my own way and having my tax dollars support those losers.

  12. By the way that line in the movie MCESC was delivered by Hildaguire Gomphers (played by Jane Curtain) as Nelly's stepmother, the daughter of Samuel Gomphers- notorious union activist.

In the movie she told Ernesto (Eric Estrada) "Until you sober up and stop pissing on my flowers every night you can "Get your foot off my adobe."
meaning no more nick nick with the lovely Sissy Spacek unless he joined AA - a real bitter sweet love story that ends with his deportation and a love child.

It is impossible that I can live alone in the forest. It is impossible for me to do everything without roommates.

Putin revealed part of his plan when he said that Russia did not have investments overseas. But the United States gets all of the products from overseas. We're vulnerable to destruction.

If you choose between dishonor and war and choose dishonor, you get war.

I got a lot of business and a good reputation over a number of years for being a home builder that ALWAYS (even when it was the biggest frkn lie) said "no problem" every time a client asked the impossible!

I always made it be a no problem and it paid off, of course, I paid as well, as in TAGAMET!

But in a world of business whining and making everything a big freaking deal / problemo out of everything, that phrase / philosophy, was so worth it....

I see a coarsening, detached and self absorbed facebook oriented society- but then remember I was born in the best of times and over two thirds of a century have witnessed the second, third and now the fourth turning of society.

When someone says "thank you" for something the polite thing used to be to say "you're welcome" and possibly tip your fedora.
My dad had a fedora and taught me to say "you're welcome".

The problem with Europe is sort of like saying when the barn is already in flames that maybe it wasn't such a good idea leaving the hurricane lamp unattended.

I still think you (and Jim) give facebook WAY too much credit for the ills of society. I've seen society as extremely self absorbed well before facebook ever entered the picture. Hell I was completely full of myself (and expensive chardonnay) way back in the 80's before little Zuckerberg ever figured a way to steal his friends invention.

Facebook isn't the wrong path, nor any indoctrination tool, simply a reflection of the times, (a modern appliance like that new fangled coffee thingy that you stick a little tin foil cup in, and get a cappuccino in 10 seconds)we happen to live in.

And YOU of all people, as a wise sage / wordsmith / philosopher, should be using these new power tools to YOUR advantage.
But then, we've (incl Jim, Sam, etal) have had this argument before.

Suffice to say, it's nice to communicate where we can...

  22. Sorry, Middy - you done got it wrong.

The actor that said it? Sidney Poitier.

The movie? 1963's "Lilies of the Field." Great movie that stands the test of time.

Sid was an itinerate man who was roped in by a gaggle of nun in (I think) Texas, who convinced him to build a chapel by hand. he reluctantly started working, and then the townspeople (including the wonderful actor Stanley Adams) began giving him help he didn't want. One day one had his foot on the adobe bricks, and Sid uttered that line several times.

Last night another guy in Compton was shot to death in his own yard which the LA coroner now labels as dying of natural causes.

This brings the total to 38 in the past year for Compton, I doubt 38 people have been shot in Arizona in similar circumstances in the ten years I have lived here.

    Keep in mind this is merely one city in Clownafornia which has very strict firearms laws and are passing even more restrictions in spite of Reason;
Please be aware that Compton is only number five in the list of the most deadly cities in the Golden State Unicorn Preserve, and still someone thinks guns are the problem so restricting them is the cure?
You can probably expect the same in Oakland, Stockton, the Inland Empire, and other hellholes- liberalism creates misery like shit from a goose yet people continue to swallow the big lie including the obvious made for tv type theatrical presentations like Sandy Hook or the Boston Bomber dragnet with no questions.

The racebaiters did a job on that great crew when they put them out of work, they were every bit as good as the Honeymooners were..
blacks being offended by a character is like me being offended by Ed Norton- it was a totally made up outrage.

Kingfish is one funny guy- I refuse to pollute my mind further with what's on today's tv when you can go back when funny was funny and they didn't need the potty mouth crutch.

The loyal order of the mystic knights of the sea was a spoof on the southern white's only masonic lodge.. great stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Middy,

Tim Moore played Kingfish. He was an old Vaudeville guy who was long retired when he was asked to play the part. He finally gave in and did it thus becoming one of the great memories of that show in particular and the early days of TV in general.

The NAACP (Wilkins) decided that it was a put down on blacks and got it taken off TV. It shows what dumb asses they were as blacks were portrayed as dressing nice, having jobs, and being respectable living in good neighborhoods like Harlem at that time.

Some of my favorite dialogue from Amos 'n' Andy:

SAPPHIRE: George Stevens, why don't you meet a better class of men?

KINGFISH: Well, I ain't got the chance to meet 'em; they all workin'

SAPPHIRE: Well, that Andy Brown is the cause of it all. What has he ever accomplished?

KINGFISH: Well, yesterday he had a run of 13 balls in da side pocket without leanin' on da table.

SAPPHIRE: Now, that's exactly what I mean--Andy hangin' around a pool table all day. Why don't he go to some cultuured place like the public library?

KINGFISH: They ain't got no pool table there.

God bless Tim Moore, Ernestine Wade, and Spencer Brown, Jr. for their great roles on that show.

Middy, I work with tons of Indians (my ex-company dumped many long-time non-Indians years ago - including me, who works there now as a contractor) and they have a year filled with holidays. One major one is Diwalai, the Festival of Light, which occurs in November. My ex-company celebrates it, too. We actually have a separate Indian food bar in the caf.

It was very hard for many people to accept them, but it is now simply a way of corporate life. I have to say that I think of it as the new normal. A couple of weeks ago at a staff meeting there were 18 of us, and I was the only non-Indian. And you know what? I didn't feel at all out of place.

The majority of them are hardworking, really nice people who just want to make a living. It's the Big Boys in New York who made the decision to repopulate the company's work force.

I'm not ribbing you about your (always) cool insights (which are not racism!); just wanted to present another viewpoint.

  121. Well Middy, I'm a Christian man and God has spoken in signs and I am to remain on disability.

I bought the equipment, I paid for the material to turn my barn into a studio, I did the research to make everything happen, paid for the website, and I created the opportunities for disabled people on entitlements to create their own jobs.

NOT ONE SALE in months and that is only possible because God wills this to be so.

I tried to get help from you guys and y'all refused. That's also a message from God and not your fault.

Social Darwinism says that the rich are the Chosen of God and therefore your responses are from the Almighty, AND in accepting that logic, that means that President Obama is also of God and therefore Socialism must also be of God.

I tried to convince local musicians to record with us and we'd give them a place to sell their music. Even friends refuse to record at the studio. That means, it is not of God.

My claim to know a famous rock star actually offends people, since she's not said anything, EXCEPT that I threatened her again, and right on Facebook. She claims to be the great great great granddaughter of Jesus Christ, so obviously she is of God.

Therefore, God has chosen to close Lana Jefferies Music LLC.

I tried to be who I am not. I tried to help and interfered with God's will for the United States of America. I tried to get that famous woman's help and God knew that she could change things, but also knew that she wouldn't care. Game, set and match.

The Antichrist must come, because if billions of people do not die, the Christ will not return. So things must be allowed to occur as they will without interference.

God wants me to join other Americans to prepare. The rock star gleefully admitted to being a witch and she is on the side of the Antichrist.

I really didn't want war. I thought that I could prevent it, but nope. God wants war.

Luckily lenders charging usury interest are the enemy, so taking their money is legal to be used to prepare for the Antichrist. They aren't of God. They go to church, but Obama did too.

  127. PHOENIX (CBS5) -

.."After a couple years of having a budget surplus, the City of Phoenix is back in dire financial straits. The city reported an estimated $38 million shortfall for Fiscal Year 2014-2015.
Phoenix City Manager Ed Zuercher officially took the job last month and faces the dilemma of limiting the city's deficit.
In a letter addressed to Mayor Greg Stanton and the Phoenix City Council, Zuercher suggested the deficit is, in part, due to expiring payroll concessions and a decreased emergency food tax"..
Well, well... hope the leaders of Phoenix didn't spend that extra 38 million yet..just wait until we start hearing calls for new taxes to cover for vital services.

.."Senior programs and parks and recreation, internal services are hit pretty hard," Zuercher said.
In Zuercher's proposal, sworn police officers and firefighters won't be affected.
But cuts will be made across all of the city's departments, including an estimated 150 to 160 jobs.
"Nearly every department we have some cut proposed across the board," Zuercher said"..

..so they will shut nutrition centers, parks and libraries, no mention of cutting expensive administrative overburden which is driving insolvency.

As I said government actually believes they should never suffer any cuts, no matter what the circumstance- at least not at the administrative level.

  190. From Fox News 3-26 a. m.

    DELAY, DELAY, DELAY
Two weeks ago, President Obama and his administration were adamant that not only would there be no delay in ObamaCare fines set to kick in on Monday, but, in the words of a Department of Health spokeswoman, “In fact, we don’t actually have the statutory authority to extend the open enrollment period in 2014.” So why did the administration on Tuesday night suddenly discover that it did have the power to delay the individual mandate by two weeks? Likely because the central provision of the president’s signature law is a dog with voters. Aside from the early problems with the ObamaCare Web site there’s the fact that many of the uninsured Americans purportedly helped by the new entitlement cannot afford it. That’s not cool in an election year in which Democrats are already set to lose several senate seats, and possibly their majority, due to public outrage over the woe begotten law. The question is will this be enough. Not likely.

It appears that people just don't care about O-Care.
