One of the great black actresses of film in the 1930’s and
40s was Hattie McDaniel. Hattie played
maids in most of her roles in films like “Gone with the Wind” (1939) and “Since
You Went Away” (1944). She was once
asked if she felt demeaned because maid roles were about all that were offered
black women in those days. Hattie
answered, “I’d rather play maids for $700 a week than be one for $7 a week.” I’m sure that Hattie’s contemporary, Louise Beavers,
would share that opinion.
Hattie needed no help from the PC crowd and neither did black
actors like Willie Best (1906-1952) who always played the pop eyed prototype
black servant in his many film and TV roles and made good money doing it.
Many other black actors did well in the 30s and 40s. Guys
like Fred “Snowflake” Toones, Mantan Moreland, Dooley Wilson, and Rochester (Eddie Anderson) were making big bucks in radio and film and were happy to play sidekicks to
white guys to make nice livings.
By the end of the 40s
guys like Sidney Poitier and James Edwards finally broke the stereotype. But, McDaniel, Best, and especially Stepin Fetchit
(Lincoln Perry, 1902-1985), had immense talent and made a lot of money. Probably the last thing on their minds was
how politically correct their roles were.
Perry became a millionaire with his portrayal as a lazy, slow-witted, jive-talkin' black
guy. He was big in films during the
1930s and still offends some African-Americans now; more than 50 years after his
huge popularity. Yet some African-Americans claim he is the first black
superstar, and thus a trailblazer for others of his race. I think they should look at him as a funny and
talented guy who portrayed characters that were not uncommon at the time. You can’t change history so enjoy the humor
of Perry and forget the PC garbage.
How long do you think this song would be played today before
the PC’ers would faint? It’s “Chew-Chou
Ching-Chong, Cincinnati Ding Dong” (2:34)
and it was huge in 1950 when I was a kid in Cincy. No one was offended. Any radio station playing it today would be
picketed in about one minute although the song sounds quite innocent to me.
The topper in PC hell has to be the small town of Pekin,
Illinois. Apparently, Pekin is directly
across the globe from Peking, China (now Beijing) so to celebrate that fact,
the high school sports teams were called the “Chinks” until 1981 when, under
some pressure from PC groups, they changed their name to the “Dragons.”
Pekin Chinks, still controversial
The liberal New York
Times did a comment about how wonderful it was that Pekin saw the light and
did the right thing in respecting globalization and the feelings of the Chinese
who were hurt by the term “Chinks.”
So, how did the town of Pekin respond to their being forced to
change their school nickname? Writer
Jeff Lewis, a former resident can tell you:
“How
did globalization by fiat fare in Pekin? More than twenty years later, home for
the holidays, I decided to pick up a Chinks T-Shirt because no one ever believes a High
School would select such a ridiculous name. Pop and I rolled over to the
T-Shirt House (on South 2nd Street in Pekin). I found no Chinks — and,
tellingly, very little Dragons — regalia. Pop isn’t shy. He sauntered over
to the desk to inquire with the clerk who, after surveying the store from
behind the desk (presumably to ensure no Chinese were shopping), led us into a
reasonably-sized, back room with every manner of Chinks memorabilia
right down to letterman jackets.
Like the Confederate flags adorning local pick-up trucks, Pekin Chinks continues to linger, reflecting the persistent hold that hatred
exerts upon the human mind. I own a Pekin ChinksT-shirt to prove
it.”
Right or wrong, ya gotta love the will of Middle
America. My advice? Lighten up!

Pekin Illinois. You like that town, don't you, Jim? That's actually where my college education started. Where a dear old friend told me to study at the Pekin public library, because I wasn't smart enough to pass an SAT/ACT to get into community college. I was there in 1981, but I don't remember the name change from the Chinks. I remember the occasional demonstrations by the old Pekin Bridge with the steel grated floor. And I think I know the second hand shop you are referring to on South 2nd. I believe I bought a few pieces of fishing equipment in there.
Pekin has changed a lot now. The traffic is worse. There's a new bridge. I'm sure there are still all those one-way streets. I think 2nd Street is one way, which is a metaphor of the attitude in that area. The one way is still very much full gospel Christianity.
Almost nothing tees me off more than this PC run amuck. It seems today if you so much as blink the wrong way at someone you find yourself at the wrong end of a lawsuit. And it isn't enough that we PC-ize new things, but we have to rework old things to accommodate 'sensitive' feelings and flavors of the month. I especially hate it when they rename places to pacify certain special interest groups. Sorry, but it will always be Squaw Peak to me. Back in my hometown I went to Richard J. Kinsella elementary school. It was named after a former mayor who did a lot for Hartford. Then, years ago, to pacify the large minority population in Hartford, Kinsella school became Betances school after a Puerto Rican activist. Piss of, Mr. Kinsella: you ain't da man no mo'. Thanks for your contributions and don't let the door hit you on the butt on your way out. Grrrrrrr.....
I sense a bit of anger there Glo...
not like you, or maybe I just don't know you well.
My favorite black sheep is the proud moniker "The Fighting Sioux" from North Dakota which has one of the premier men as well as women's hockey programs in the world ..
none of the reservation types are too dismayed and complaining, in fact one said.. "By and large most people either don't care or support the name," Lyle Antelope, a member of the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation"
and...
"There was no such consensus in North Dakota. The Spirit Lake tribe approved the nickname in 2010, but the other tribe_ Standing Rock – never took a vote"
this sounds like typical reservation politics to me... but don't let my natural skepticism bordering on cynicism distract you..
It doesn't surprise me after all the local band of Hekawi have plenty else on their mind like all the victims of this nation's insatiable appetite for condemning innocents into generational plantation life share.
Not surpisingly to some of us we now find it's the usual suspects.
..a bunch of disaffected members of the 24/7 midol crowd at NYSU, Columbia, Harvard and all the other cesspools of liberalism that are at constant war with liberty.
pretty good restraint eh Jim, I did a whole response without even stepping a toe in the water politic... can't guarantee the future, but this one was a milestone.
sarc. off.
and while I am in a buoyant mood, check out this clip..
http://www.spike.com/video-clips/h6xggf/f-troop-happy-birthday-bald-eagle
"we all want to be friends, so take the chains off" haha.. Rodney King has been with us for generations.
actually this short is a good lesson to everyone that thinks they can just get along with anyone, like the libs suggest the Republicans do by opening up a big tent.. haha. don rickles as chief bald eagle..
yeah.. I knew I wouldn't last long.
Yeah, Middy, a little bit of anger and disgust at the way PCness has taken over the world. Just tired of the special interest groups who want to be equal but more equal than others (to paraphrase Orwell).
BTW: Where the heck are we? ;)
Jim, I could care less about the PC crowd. I fly my Confederate every January to honor one of America's greatest generals, Robert E. Lee, on his birthday.
It seems the majority of the black population, mostly the uneducated ones, actually believe in the nonsense that Obama, Jackson, and Sharpton spew. It's sad to think that some people can't think for themselves.
As far as sports teams are concerned Stanford changed their name from Indian to Cardinal years to be PC. Of course their in California so that's understandable. The Florida State Seminoles have the full support of the Seminole tribe.
Luckily the Washington Redskins and the Atlanta Braves have decided not to go PC. Good for them.
BTW, it's still Squaw Peak to me. I don't care what anyone says.
Yeah I agree wholeheartedly Glo, but when you realize that Political Correctness didn't happen by accident it makes a lot more sense.
It was a carefully conceived means to promote false white guilt among the educated class intended to from there trickle down throughout society.
Once academia was on board it was an easy sell to pressure group sensitive regulators and a handy way for the usual bad cast of despicable politicians to keep racial tensions forever on the back burner.
..na- I realized long ago that anything this diabolical just cannot be happenstance, yet I doubt very many people realize that the greater of the damage is not it's dampening effect on free speech but it's greater goal was to be a means to soften up and gradually introduce new concepts like forced inclusion and sustain the continued forces balkanizing pressure on society..
When some lightweight like Bill O'Reilly assumes that the collective good has priority over the individual's rights to property then there is no limit to what tyrannical impositions to the individual the state can do in the name of common good.
mere innocence of intent is no defense to an accusation of crimes against the common, if you wear a fighting Sioux sweater to support the team it doesn't matter.. the collective demands obedience to the gods of political correctness and that god demands blood sacrifice..
The rule of thumb for me is if it doesn't harmonize with the basic tenets of natural law then it probably isn't in our best interests, and that applies to everything.
but what the hell do I know?- after all I am merely an uneducated plebe condemned to a life of being continually late in getting to the wrong place, so anyone got a better explanation?
Right or wrong, ya gotta love the will of Middle America. My advice? Lighten up!
Pekin was a big transition period for me. Lots of weird things happened that turned into good things later on. When my parents died, other people took over. Writers and such wanting to make sure that I had a chance, I guess. Huh, Jim?
I have some Native American friends who don't like the label, "Native American." They say it's "American Indian." Native American applies to anyone born in the United States of America. American Indian says they were here first.
Hey, I figured that I'd re-do the root cellar. I can have it done in time, and turn it into a nice storm bunker/SHTF bunker. I am the only one with an underground shelter in the neighborhood. I'd much rather live in the safety of the forest than in Pekin during a storm or civil unrest.
That entire area was actually settled by War of 1812 military veterans, including my kinfolk. It's a very divided area to this day with old Union families and Confederate families living side by side. Occasionally, someone will find a hidden uniform or flags. I know one family who found a secret passage for the Underground Railroad!
Wander the fields after a good rain before planting and you will find the nicest arrowheads and stone tools you ever saw in your life!
I miss Illinois, but that state has gotten so bad. Can't eat the fish from rivers and lakes anymore. So many relatives died of cancer. Young folks getting cancer. It's like New Jersey without the dialect.
I sort of remember this blonde that I met in a Pekin second hand shop. I really liked her, but she didn't like me. So many people are like that. It's worse than PC. So that's why I have the SN rule.
Struggling to stay on topic. Personality disorders are a drag.
You guys need to come and visit me. Jim, you come and I'll let you fire my guns on the range. I'll give you one bullet at a time, so you won't be tempted. I'll give CJ the entire clip. Nothing like being shot by a hot chick.
Then we can go on the Spoon River Valley Scenic Fall Festival. I'll find someone with a coonhound to take us all on a coonhunt. Is that not PC? If anyone says the activity is brutal, perhaps I'll help them get situated to pee on an electric fence. That's brutal! It's a hillbilly taser.
HCCJ... call collect..
haha. hey babe you got some tp on your heel.
Maybe Bodo and Maria have returned all giddy over their trip to Missouri.. man that is right up there with climbing the matterhorn or traversing the Kern divide eh?
Man I wish I had a decent camera when I was up in the Sierra's in the late seventies- can't even imagine doing that any more... which part would give up first?
Hey, Jim, the problem with those stereotypical roles is in the way that they limit the opportunities available to regular people. We cannot all be movie stars, you know ... And even those movie stars were typecast whether they recognized that or even cared while they were collecting the relatively big bucks or not.
You know what? I have experienced discrimination while working in a man's world -- as a press operator -- & now I am experiencing discrimination all over again, although, this time it is related to age. Meanwhile, it has never been more obvious that you have not experienced any discrimination, Jim.
OTOH, you are right that all this PC crap as it is at present is, at best, ridiculous &, at worst, wrong, wrong, wrong ... The problem is that it is being taken to ridiculous extremes. You practically need 'an app for that' nowadays just to keep up with what words not to say.
It is actually nothing new -- certain four letter words have been politically incorrect for a very long time -- the only real difference being in the rate in which new words are being added & the wide variety of topics they involve. Glo called it correctly: "PC run amok."
Where's my phone? I am going to add "CJ" & "hot chick" to the unPC list.
Mike, Did I ever tell you how my son almost got his black friend killed in 7th or 8th grade? It involved lots of Lynyrd Skynyrd & a Confederate flag which his friend then borrowed to hang on his own bedroom wall. Yeah, the other kid's mom just didn't seem to get that whole rebel thing ...
One plantation to the other I guess.. the govt. really does treat some of it's citizens poorly, if it's not displacing tribes half way across the country, giving them contaminated blankets they are constructing section 8 prison cells in every liberal bastion at this moment.
Seems like your arm would get tired Cj from always giving someone the pinata treatment, I'm still sore from the verbal thrashing I received a couple of weeks ago, I don't know if my now jumping at the sound of a door slam will ever go away..
I'm starting to think you have more than a couple birthdays every month.. we all realize you are stressed but really Jim has gone to bat for you more times than I have.. it's like you want to be your own worst enemy, there is nothing whatsoever to gain by voicing your frustration at someone as tho any of us chose this economic calamity.
just give it a rest, besides you are giving Rick the hot sweats- he's in his prime..
Rick,
I'm sure you know from experience how small town folks think. I don't think they like people like the NY Times or any other PC outsiders telling them what to call their teams.
I think it's funny that the shirt store had the backroom with any kind of "Chinks" items you want. Once more we find that there is more than one way to skin a cat.
This whole idea of changing school mascots or names after 50 years because the names may offend someone is pure bull. Those names are in fun; there is no malice.
Sonny,
No kidding? You actually lived in Pekin?
I agree. We also had an old saying: "F--- you if you can't take a joke!"
I'm sure that although "Chinks" was a bit derogatory by today's standards, it wasn't meant as an affront to the Chinese.
Did you hear my attachment of "Cincinnati Ding Dong"? They couldn't play that today.
Glo,
What you mention is so typical today. I'll never know why we kiss up to the PC'ers. They should have never changed that school name.
St. John's U in New York used to be the Redmen but had to change to Red Storm because of an Indian complaint. What the dumb ass Indians didn't know was that Redmen had nothing to do with them. The teams were called that because they wore all red uniforms. The school should have told them to shove it.
Middy,
I remember the brouhaha about the Fighting Sioux. I think that is a great name; it reflects courage and determination.
I did a blog in February with a mention of that squabble but never did hear how it turned out.
http://jmcallister.blogspot.com/search?q=fighting+sioux
What did I say this time?
All I did was disagree on part of Jim's point & point out that I have had a little experience in the discrimination department while he has not. So is that what you call a "pinata treatment"? Geez, Middy, I always thought you were way too old & male to be that sensitive. You should probably let Jim stand up for himself from now on, buddy, because I know for a fact that he can if I am being too harsh & he won't get all limp wristed when he does like you just did.
(Crud, that last line will get me kicked out of a couple PC clubs ... Oh well, I was just there for the entertainment anyway.)
Yeah, Rick always seems to have the hots for someone he can never ever have, doesn't he?
Middy,
Funny clip. I'm sure the Indians or native Americans or whatever they are got quite a kick out of that. LOL
I think larry Storch is still around. he was a funny SOB.
Mike,
I'm with you all the way. Keep flying that flag to honor Gen. lee.
Stanford probably had no choice with all those liberal do gooder nuts in N. California.
I was afraid Atlanta Braves would change but they held fast against dropping their name and the chop.
These people need to acquire a sense of humor. There is no disrespect involved. They should be honored that they get the recognition.
Of course, we can call the tribes anything we want as long as we go to their casinos.
I know what you mean about the Obama followers. It's like they are following the Pied Piper right into the river. That's fine; if they drown they can't vote! LOL
Rick,
I agree; American Indian sounds better than Native American. However, I think they have a problem with the term "Indian."
I don't know why. Maybe it's because Columbus thought he was in India.
Interesting info. about Pekin and Illinois. Thanks, Rick.
Rick,
I only get one bullet? Who the hell am I; Barney Fife?
Maybe it's my imagination but it seems you are over due for your biannual charm school refresher.. that innocent wonder filled little girl we all know and love that lives inside you is just keening to rip free and get another shot at cordiality.
..do it, do it for the team.
CJ,
I was fortunate in having never faced discrimination. It was a different era for me.
Guys had to go into the military whether they wanted to or not. The good news is that they learned about discipline and how to find order in their lives along with the importance of an education.
I have no regrets. I did my military, met Barb, got my degree afterward, got a good job and so far, have lived happily ever after.
I would not particularly like to be thrust into the world of today where college grads from three years ago are still looking for jobs and have moved back home.
What about a straight up trade?, we give them the Fighting Sioux and start calling them the North Dakota Tooth Fairies and they change their basketball team name to the Detroit Ni***rs?
Joe,
Names never did bother me. I guess I lived by the old "Sticks and stones may break my bones......" mentality.
However, since I was basically a typical white guy in appearance, I never had to listen to names like wop, etc.
Some nationalities are a bit more hot blooded over certain names so I can see their point in letting that stuff bother them. I found it easy to turn the other cheek but I can see some groups being nationalistic about it.
I never minded being called stringbean or four eyes but maybe some attacks on my family would have aroused me more.
Middy,
I agree. Let'ts bring that idea up to them and see if we can dodge the arrows. LOL
"Senator Boonsong Kowawisarat took out a 9mm Uzi submachine gun while waiting for food, the Bangkok Post reported.
He told police the gun accidentally discharged and his secretary was shot in the stomach.
Police say that the shooting happened in Phrae province, northern Thailand.
Police say that because Mr Boonsong was in shock after the incident, the restaurant owner rushed the secretary to hospital where she succumbed to gunshot wounds.
Correspondents say that it is not clear whether Mr Boonsong knew the gun was loaded before the shooting.
"From our initial inquiry, the secretary's family will not sue because they were relatives and it was an accident - he did not mean to do it," a local police officer told AFP by telephone.
Officials said it was also unclear why the senator was armed at the meal.
Police have yet to arrest the senator - a member of the upper house of the Thai parliament - as he is protected by parliamentary privilege, the Bangkok Post reported.
Mr Boonsong faces a maximum of 10 years imprisonment and a 20,000 baht fine if convicted"
.. I get a laugh out of those who complain we let our politicians get away with murder, hell all those baht only amount to 636.00 U.S. - in Southeast Asia political correctness is pretty much unheard of.. they have real problems.
And for all the gals in this country who think we take them for granted...six hundred and thirty six bucks?- and that was an expensive professional- farm girls are a dime a dozen.
Yeah, Rick always seems to have the hots for someone he can never ever have, doesn't he?
Give the lady a cookie, Jim.
CJ's right. I always hit on chicks I can never have and for good reason. Thanks to SN, the U.S. will control the oil in the Middle East soon.
He told police the gun accidentally discharged and his secretary was shot in the stomach.
Dude, she's his ex-wife! Oh that's too funny. America is tame in comparison.
Ok, here are the cliff notes on the Olympics...
Top nine embarrassing comments allegedly made by NBC sports commentators during the Summer Olympics:
1. Weightlifting commentator: “This is Gregoriava from Bulgaria . I saw her snatch this morning during her warm up and it was amazing.”
2. Dressage commentator: “This is really a lovely horse and I speak from personal experience since I once mounted her mother.”
3. Paul Hamm, Gymnast: “I owe a lot to my parents, especially my mother and father.”
4. Boxing Analyst: “Sure there have been injuries, and even some deaths in boxing, but none of them really that serious.”
5. Softball announcer: “If history repeats itself, I should think we can expect the same thing again.”
6. Basketball analyst: “He dribbles a lot and the opposition doesn’t like it. In fact you can see it all over their faces.”
7. At the rowing medal ceremony: “Ah, isn’t that nice, the wife of the IOC president is hugging the cox of the British crew.”
8. Soccer commentator: “Julian Dicks is everywhere. It’s like they’ve got eleven Dicks on the field.”
9. Tennis commentator: “One of the reasons Andy is playing so well is that, before the final round, his wife takes out his balls and kisses them… Oh my God, what have I just said?”
lol.. guess I ought to watch these things just for the pratfall/out takes these gushing reporters normally make when they are trying to out do one another in the jump the shark event..
Note to self: leave the Uzi at home when on a date.
Helen Gurley Brown died at 90, yesterday. A women's lib chick. Hell yes, burn those bras! Can I watch? Signed, a lifetime member of Real Men.
Prime Minister of Syria defected to Jordan saying that he'll be back after the country collapses. Adios bitches. Iran is next and that's gonna be sweet payback for 1979.
Guns? The United States citizens must be armed. We're gonna all have to carry guns, because America will rule the world. We will have lots of enemies.
It is necessary for the time to allow Islam some control, but that will change in time. For now, they are useful.
The fact of the matter is, who would you rather dominate the world? Russia, China or America? Yeah, China owns part of the government, but as long as they don't own 51 percent, we can put them down eventually and void the debt. Global governance is inevitable. Resistance is futile.
The topper in PC hell has to be the small town of Pekin, Illinois. Apparently, Pekin is directly across the globe from Peking, China (now Beijing).
So why was the town named Pekin instead of Peking? And why was it an all white town for years? Crime was lower than nearby East Peoria. In some ways, it resembled China for the closed system.
Apparently I did stay at SN' place in Arizona, because my parents sent me to stay in Pekin to get off the drugs. To the rich, I was nobody, but a joke. Still am. That's why the world must be dominated.
"the word is out"...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MceFVpJ-Gyc
wonder why this video has not been seen by America at large, the media seems disinterested..
I wonder if the GOP might be interested?
mr. Sinclair took a polygraph and was judged by the administrator of that test to be telling the truth.. Mr. Obama did not.
If media ever does an honest investigation and starts peeling away the layers of lies they are going to discover a Shitcago style criminal organization.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwgD-8Bj_Qs&feature=player_embedded#!
Oddly enough mr. Sinclair was hit by a car in 2011 in a hit and run "accident" which was never solved.
nothing suspicious about that.
"In late 2007, as Obama began his ascent to be the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, in a span of 1½ months, all three men “conveniently” died:
Bland was murdered execution-style on November 17, 2007;
Young was murdered execution-style on December 24, 2007;
Spencer reportedly died of septicemia, pneumonia, and HIV on December 26, 2007"
puzzles always look like a random confusion until you start to piece them together, a single accusation can be ignored, two might give some concern but three suspicious deaths signal things might not be coincidence.
Bathhouse Barry has some explaining to do- does anyone in the Republican party have the stones to dig a bit in this obvious cover up by the media?
Odd. The housekeeper said that Dora is in the kitchen and I smelled death. There are other spirits that hang around and not just Dora. I guess I'll burn some sage and then some cedar and that should keep the bad spirits out of the house. The bad spirits really dredge up bad memories and that's because they feed on those feelings. I need to stay in a positive mood.
In Pekin, my kind of spiritual Christianity would be of the devil. They'd say that SN put a spell on me. That's what Pekin is really like. Seriously Christian and they don't like the Chinese. Hence the Chinks.
CHARM: Now there's a truly outdated skill. Just like having a fertile appearance did before it, the ability to charm men went the way of the dinosaur sometime around the turn of the last century.
Hey, Jim, you know what used to be a really bad word? OKIE. In my family, upon arriving here in Phoenix, 4 of 5 kids in one family were summarily sent back a few grades in school for being from that part of the country in the 1930s (the 5th kid was still a toddler). Of course, it didn't help that they also appeared to be half injun. That was my maternal grandmother and her siblings & the school was Monroe Elementary in downtown Phoenix. My maternal grandfather's family managed to get a Phoenix Union teacher dismissed for calling him an Okie in front of the class when he first got here.
German sounding surnames also provided some difficulties during that era too. That was easy enough to change though & many families did just that.
One more thing: the e-mail account that I set up for the AzCentral blogs was recently hacked. I am still running malware & virus scans &, if there are any further problems, I may delete that account entirely. You have my other email address, though, Jim. You might want to change me to that one in your contact list.
One more thing: the e-mail account that I set up for the AzCentral blogs was recently hacked.
Jim got phished, CJ. The origin of the hack is from Old Mexico. When they hacked Jim, they got your address, my address, everything. They're selling porno, but moreso searching for information about Americans. We are the enemy.
The fact is that our enemies will be unlikely to show up at your door, CJ. They'll take us apart through our greatest strengths to turn them into our greatest weaknesses.
Our wealth is after all, just a psychological illusion and a million dollars could so easily be made to appear as zero dollars. It's not like it's real money.
It may actually be from Iran and through Mexico to Jim and people like him.
Time to buy a gun and learn how to use it, CJ. First they attack the communications, then they come in by air, then a ground attack.
BTW CJ, did I mention how incredibly hot you look today? Still no AC?
Just like having a fertile appearance did before it, the ability to charm men went the way of the dinosaur sometime around the turn of the last century.
Life was hard then. Men were men and women were women. Now men can be women and women can be men. Charm is something you buy made in China and blessed by a machine.
Yes, I burned the sage and the cedar and cleansed the house and myself with the smoke. Legally.
I don't even open my Yahoo email account anymore... it's a screen door to malware and other critters.
I bought the paid version of MalwareBytes anti malware program about six months ago and so far so good..
yeah, gotta be pretty careful anymore.
Bakersfield was the mecca for victims of the dustbowl in the thirties who could afford gasoline...
I just laugh at them when they try to give me the old "Okie-dokie"- my bud I roomed with for a year in Blythe who just happened to be born black growing up in Mississippi used to give me the works.. haha he should talk- plus he was air force puke that served in Thailand loading B 52's during the war, cold beer and warm cots- hey someone had to load em.
Wayne lived his childhood in deep south segregation before joining the military to bootstrap himself out of poverty- I call that becoming a self made man..
..the other side of the family around the time of the first world war morphed the family name from Wagner- (pronounced with the gutteral "V") to what it is today...
..zappa.
so ya see, in my parts occasionally changing one's name is a family tradition...
no sense getting all riled up over nothing- we have real issues.
and as I remind my Texmex homie from Larado when he gets all wound up and starts badmouthing my native soil- we call it "Baja Oklahoma".. stops him cold.
I just spoke with Robin Carnahan's office with the Missouri Secretary of State's office and no marijuana initiative is on the November ballot. Any and all rumors to the contrary are false.
I guess the governor's son is still going to have that marijuana bust on his record, even if daddy got him off.
Middy,
A sub machine gun went off by accident? Yeah, right!
I guess he figured that since it happened in public he would have witnesses to verify such nonsense.
Well, I'm off to McDonals's. Uh, honey, have you seen my sub machine gun?
Rick,
Don't give up hitting on the chicks. You never know when you might luck out on timing. Everyone needs a shoulder to cry on sometimes.
Middy,
Those are great bloopers. Where is Kermit Schaefer when we need him?
My fave is "I saw her snatch."
I'll bet the director fell out of his chair on that one.
Rick,
I remember Helen Gurley Brown over the years from the magazine business. They made a really crappy movie about her in 1964 called "Sex and the Single Girl". It starred Natalie Wood and Henry Fonda.
I have no idea why Pekin dropped the "G". Maybe they wanted their own identity or they knew that China is always changing city names depending on what Communist is ruling at the time.
Middy,
Interesting about Obama but it will never fly even if true. Romney would probably be blamed for planting Sinclair.
CJ,
I'm sure the resentment of "Okies" came from those who read or saw the movie of Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath."
It was a sad but pretty true tale of the plight of those from Oklahoma who lost everything during the Depression combined with lost crops from the dust bowl days.
Tough times for sure through no fault of their own.
CJ,
I received a couple of ads from Rick and Joe Schubert a couple weeks ago but nothing else so I think that is cleared up.
Middy,
"plus he was air force puke"
Easy there, buddy! We didn't have it as good as you think. Sometimes we had to drink cold beer that wasn't our favorite brand while we sat in the day room!
A friend was in the Air Force in Panama. I showed him my AR-15, and he acted like he'd never seen a rifle before! He was in Panama! Turns out the Air Force issued him a converted M-16 in .22 caliber rimfire ammunition.
Now, don't y'all laugh at the Air Force and the rimfire rifles. The .22 caliber isn't much different from the 5.56 and in fact, the .22 magnum (WMR) would probably out perform the little .223 Remington aka 5.56 in the brush of Vietnam or Panama. A former sniper told me that.
haha.. yeah use the term every chance I get... I forget the ratio but it's pretty high as to those who served in support and those who humped the bush.. and then there are those who were close such as artillery who never wandered fifty meters off a firebase and truck drivers on convoy missions to the Rockpile and other fire bases every day that took casualties- after all, fire bases and highway 9 were prime targets- if I remember right it was paved from Dong Ha to Quang Tri- from Dong Ha on you were on dirt- at Dong Ha a left took you to hell and a right turn took you to hell- straight was North VN.
The operation was a big involving a half a million troops, or as Joe would say.. this is really f***in' big!
By the way, puke is not a derogatory term when used in the familial sense between vets anymore than Gob or wing wiper.
.. after all it was a team failure with all of the blame for all failure laid at the politicians feet.
The war was not lost because we couldn't hold Mudder's ridge or The Grinder, it was lost on American tv and in Washington DC.
Middy,
Life is all about timing.
I went in during peace time and my whole tour of four years would have been simply to Texas, then to central Missouri, then back to Cincy. That's about an 800 miles out and back.
If it wasn't for my 4 month stint TDY in Germany in '63, that would have been my whole service. I wouldn't have even got that if I hadn't volunteered.
Because you were born about 7 years after I was, your timing took you to war in in some life risking, hellacious places.
I'm glad you made it through and I salute you for your service.
Pekin Illinois is not real gun friendly. A lot of cities back about 30 years ago, banned handguns. In Canton Illinois, the cops would come and confiscate the handguns. People say it didn't happen, but Google firearm confiscation and Illinois and the Internet is full of stories of police confiscating firearms in cities, before the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Second Amendment. Illinois has the infamous firearm registration card and you can't buy guns or ammo without it!
The Christians in Illinois simply say that Christ told them to surrender to the State what is theirs and give to God what is God's from passive New Testament teachings. They are ready to go freely to the FEMA camps and die for Christ. Illinois is beaten already.
But I don't live in Illinois and I'm not brainwashed like them. It's almost impossible to find ammo for some firearms in the Ozarks! People are prepping.
Not so in Illinois. But everything there is owned, down to the pollution in the water.
funny how memories can become latent for decades then flooding back at the oddest moment.
.. sometimes a smell can set them off, sometimes something all together different..
yeah timing is everything- and sometimes it can make the difference between a good story and lights out- game over, thanks for playing.
that sounds a bit trite eh?
but it's true.
I keep a can of fruit cake, and some old fading photos my kids can later throw away.. sometimes that's all you have to remind yourself, after all it has been over forty years.
surprised Obama hasn't called out Mitt Romney for not being in the service.. oh yeah that's right.
By the way, same to you for your service it's a big fraternity.
and as most know for most the last real decision you get to make is putting that hand in the air and swearing to defend the Constitution and the nation.
.. after that it's Kismet.
Cj, I flew my Confederate flag for ten years in Glendale with a black woman living next door. Never heard any complaints. I guess some people are more sensitive than others.
Are you trying to say white guys aren't discriminated against?
When I worked for the phone company they sponsored clubs for employees, meaning they donated money to, woman clubs, black men and woman clubs, gay men and woman clubs but the one thing they wouldn't donate to was a club for white guys.
Jim, liberals don't have a sense of humor. If they did they wouldn't be liberals.
Mike, Exactly. Apparently you've had it so good that you are not even clear on what real discrimination is. I am not talking about the definition right now either. Rather, I am talking about the way certain people can be denied opportunities, can be paid less for the same work when they do get hired, and in other ways be held back due to prevailing stereotypes ... Meanwhile, the best example you could come up with was something along the lines of: Hey, somebody got more than me! Typical con behavior.
Actually, I would question where that sponsorship money actually went but I already know that it wouldn't change your attitude. BTW, white guys do occasionally get discriminated against if they fall into certain groups. For instance, nowadays Vets -- white, black, or other -- are receiving a version of affirmative action jobs. I just heard of another instance of this on the news tonight regarding Intel & some particularly good jobs that Vets will get preference for.
Regarding your black neighbor, yeah, some people are more sensitive than others. Some people are also more tolerant toward kooky neighbors too.
Rick,
The NY Times called people from Pekin "Pekinese." Jeff Lewis, who greeww up there, says they are actually "Pekinites."
Leave it to the NY Times to botch it.
Middy,
That is really true. Barb and I have said many times that smells and tastes remind us of experiences in the past.
Especially Cincinnati Chili!
Middy,
Like you say, guys who have served are a big fraternity. You can usually tell who is an ex-serviceman.
I still always check my "Gig" line on my shirt and never leave the house without well shined shoes. And, shined with nothing but Kiwi, it's the best especially for spit shining.
I haven't worn a pair of shoes in over a year, feet hurt too much, bad news for me today... my damn Polack barber closed up and moved to Shitcago.. he has family and is planning to retire. guess the bennies are a little better in that hell hole.. so now I gotta find another barber, and that ain't as easy as you might think seeing how much of a dyspeptic troglodyte I've become, I hate to go to the grocery store anymore.
Yeah, I'm gonna miss ol Anthony but I don't blame him for milking the system, at least he was an honest guy otherwise..
Funny- just last year he was telling me he was moving back to Poland to retire, I guess with Europe swirling like a stopped up toilet he changed his mind.
like Jim says.. He may be crazy but he's not stupid... haha great line eh?
http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/story/2012-08-14/west-nile-virus-mosquito/57057540/1
I guess that West Nile virus is getting out of control in Tejas, I was listening to early morning talk on WBAP and there is the same type of hysteria in Dallas Fort Worthless over the mosquito spraying as there was in California over the fruit fly...
If there was ever one damn thing the government might have a bit of success with is vector control if the nutjobs would just leave them alone.
Those bloodborn parasites are bad news, spraying is better than having a kid with encephalitis.. I just don't understand people.
Mike,
When I worked for the phone company they sponsored clubs for employees, meaning they donated money to, woman clubs, black men and woman clubs, gay men and woman clubs but the one thing they wouldn't donate to was a club for white guys.
Well said. I think major companies are always fearful of complaints from minorities. They are the ones who always bitch and complain even though most of their problem is paranoia on their part.
You're right about liberals. They live in their little microcosm of idealism with no comprehension of what real life is about. To them it is all about the makers supporting the takers; a myth at best and a sorry way to look at life.
I have news for them: No one ever said life is fair; in most cases to make it, you have to make your own breaks not sit around whining and waiting for a bloated national government to save your ass.
Look at some of the whiners we have had to listen too for 6 years on Plugged in.
Middy,
I have a cute little dish at Super Cuts who does my hair for $9 on their summer special and $14 regular price. Helluva deal! I would ask her out if Barb would please listen to reason! So far, I can't sell her on the idea.
I didn't even know about West Nile hitting this year. It's always something.
Whatever happened to the white flies that used to come visit every year and leave all the spots on windshields?
I think they exported them to Blythe.. I hated those suckers and there were clouds of them all the way to work..
This is a good storm moving around, I was on the balcony in a misty breeze and the desert smell after a rain should be bottled and sold.
I think I am a desert rat after all, I have had plenty of opportunity to leave but somehow didn't..
I feel pity for those guys having to work outside tomorrow.. it's going to be a real scorcher. still time for a little skinny dipping.. pretty good lightning show.
TO SPONSOR: One that finances a project or an event carried out by another person or group, especially a business enterprise that pays for radio or television programming in return for advertising time.
So let's just see how this works: if a corporate fast food joint like, oh, say Chick Fil A wants to donate money to groups that espouse & promote intolerance & sometimes even hatred of a certain people, then that is their money to do with as they please & those people being hurt by the intolerance do not even have the right to peaceful protest as guaranteed by the US Constitution. BUT if someplace where Mike worked donated to groups that he did not want to belong to anyway, then you guys believe that the company should have been FORCED to donate something to him & his straight white male buddies too? GEEZ, you should have formed a bowling league for white guys only with a company logo on your shirts or something.
IT IS NOT DISCRIMINATION because your rights were not abridged when you did not get your share of charity too.
That was simply Kepplenesque Cj, I actually read it three times and still can't see your point- it started looking as informative as an eye chart.
As with excuses for individual failure, discrimination seems to be a handy yet well worn excuse that gets stretched well beyond relativity.
..what is your answer, a government program?- more regulations?- repatriations?
It sounds like you are asking for some version of affirmative action for the concerns of rapidly aging females that got caught flatfooted in a changing economy and now have a bad case of red ass.
Seriously I can't or rather won't waste sympathy on someone who refuses to not even listen to anyone that has been successful, but even refuses to listen to lessons from life itself.
You seem comfortable enough to remain in the wallow..
..enjoy the ride.
Kepplenesque? What does that even mean? I can see Middy walking around barefoot, drinking whiskey, popping pills, ranting to himself, occasionally tapping away on the keyboard, sweeping his excessively long hair back over his shoulder, yellowed teeth, yellowed fingernails and paranoid that the U.S. government has his toilet paper bugged.
So the Republican Congress has barely produced any bills into law and how do the supporters explain this? It's a good thing, they say! Fewer laws. If Democrats had produced so few laws, the Republicans would call them lazy.
In recent polls, half of all Americans believe there is NO difference between Republicans and Democrats.
In Missouri, legislators are fighting Obamacare, because there has been organized genocide against the poor, disabled and elderly to exterminate by medical neglect for about 12 years now. This war has been perpetrated by both Democrats and Republicans.
But Missouri is NOT the worst. In some states, you can't get Medicaid unless your income is half that of the federal poverty guidelines.
My recent medications' side effects read like an extermination option list. So the government is subtly exterminating people who no longer provide a useful purpose to society, but yet assisted suicide is illegal.
Middy,
Those flies came every year and suddenly they were gone; weird.
We actually had a lot of wind and lightning last night but no rain. It's been a dry monsoon season here but to the northwest in Anthem they got bombed to the tune of 5" in about an hour and a half. That may be unprecedented; lots of damage and no flood insurance.
It sounds like you are asking for some version of affirmative action for the concerns of rapidly aging females that got caught flatfooted in a changing economy and now have a bad case of red ass.
Uh-Oh!
Jim,
I'm late to the party, but how about the Cleveland Indians "Chief Wahoo". one of the most un-PC of all team names and logos. They still refuse to change after all these years.
Uh-oh? feeling bloated?
haha. that was a great little storm last night, the lightning show was not bad for so late in the day, it started raining here about 11.30 and the wind picked up after, not before the rain.. unusual.
it was hot tubing at it's west side finest.
"I actually read it three times and still can't see your point.....what is your answer, a government program?- more regulations?- repatriations?"
Absolutely not! But, sadly, I can see your point all too well & here it is: Anything that you do not agree with or especially anything that you simply do not understand must be some form of commie driven liberal program.
Here, let me spell out what I was really trying to say:
First, I was addressing this comment from Mike Slater & Jim's subsequent agreement with it, "When I worked for the phone company they sponsored clubs for employees, meaning they donated money to, woman clubs, black men and woman clubs, gay men and woman clubs but the one thing they wouldn't donate to was a club for white guys."
Second, I looked up what it means when a business or company sponsors a club or event. What it means is that the company contributes support for the cause usually in the form of money, ie. CHARITY, or else in exchange for advertising or, at very least, to get their name on the sponsor list which in itself is a form of relatively cheap advertisement...
Next, I drew a connection between what Mike was saying here & what you guys were complaining about just last week involving the Chick Fil A corporation: the idea being that corporations/businesses/companies have a right to donate to any cause they please without another group having any say in what that cause may be by exercising their right to peaceful protest (or demanding an equal share because, while the last part was not specifically stated, it certainly was implied that the gays protesting Chick A Fil should not demand an equal share of the money being donated) ...
Lastly, I suggested that Mike should have formed his own special interest group for white guys if he felt so discriminated against because white guys in general do not receive any sponsorship money (although, where is the real harm he suffered?) ... Bowling leagues were all the thing back in the days he is whining about. And companies often sponsored those in exchange for a little cheap advertising on the team shirts.
I also mentioned that Veterans are getting special preference these days in an extremely tight job market & that I heard yet another example just last night regarding a new plant that Intel is opening. That's affirmative action right there because I believe our government is offering those companies that hire Veterans over civilians "points" that give the company a tax break or something like that. And, hey, I believe that white guys are a part of that group too. Now while I find that to be incredibly unfair to other groups that are also having huge difficulties getting hired in this job market -- the over-40 crowd, for instance -- I did not once suggest that government programs, more regulations, or repatriations ... were in order. Actually, I was suggesting there should be less of that kind of stuff.
We can fight about whether Veterans have actually done something to deserve affirmative action later. And I am not even saying right now that Intel should not hire a whole boatload of Vets if it wants ... I just believe that our government should NOT be in the business of handing out hiring preferences. ESPECIALLY in a land of equal rights to life & liberty & at a time when opportunities to make a living in this country are in such short supply. AND I would say the same thing about any group right now: white, black, female, American Indian, gay ... mulatto lesbians in wheelchairs ..
Buzz,
I've always been proud of Cleveland for sticking with Chief Wahoo. It's all in fun and the "injuns" need to acquire a sense of humor.
The "Redmen" thing at St. Johns always got me the most as the name didn't have anything to do with Indians; just team colors.
The smart Indians are the Seminoles who embrace Florida State for using their name.
The tribes better not piss off too many of us. I love going to the Indian casinos but there are plenty of casinos in Laughlin and Vegas too.
In a similar blog from a couple of years ago I mentioned two of my favorite college names: The UC Santa Cruz "Banana Slugs" and the Whittier College (Nixon's Alma Mater) "Poets."
I have yet to hear any complaints from banana slugs or Poets.
CJ,
I think Vets should have an advantage in the job market as a thank you for their risk of life and limb protecting this country. Especially since we have a president who never served a day and doesn't even know how to salute as he tries to screw veterans.
Preference by race, color, sex, etc. should be far down the list behind those guys.
Like I said to Middy, Jim, I do not want to argue whether Vets (even those who did not necessarily serve in a war) should get special preference over other demographic groups (btw, right now the biggest single problem when looking for work is ageism, not racism or sexism ...) right now. But I must admit that I did not have you pegged as an affirmative action sorta guy. Principles are principles, Jim. They should be applied consistently without consideration for what makes you personally feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
I'll try to get back on the issue, it's an interesting one Cj.. but as usual there are two ways to look at it.
but right now I got way too much pain to deal with.. must be the humidity.
CJ,
I'm not for affirmative action but I do think the vets are a special situation.
The affirmative action thing that used to gripe me was from guys like Jesse Jackson who fought to get more blacks in college even though they were hopelessly unqualified and would consistently flunk.
we have an affirmative action president, look how well that is working out..
Jim, have a big juicy burger or steak tonight!

Steve,
Have you read Biden's gaffes this week? What a clown!
“Once, again, General Motors [is] the largest automobile maker in the world. Folks, where’s it written we cannot lead the world in the 20th century in making automobiles? I’ve not seen it written anywhere.”
Steve,
The, he tells a group of black guys in Danville, VA that "the Republicans will have y'all wrapped in chains."
As if that wasn't enough, he tells those Virginia guys that he hope he can count on them to help Obama take North Carolina.
Rudy Giuliani commented about Biden:
“Well, I think if it came from somebody serious maybe we’d get all excited about it. But the – I think the vice president of the United States has become a laugh line on late night television. I mean, he – I’ve never seen a vice president that has made as many mistakes, said as many stupid things. I mean, there’s a real fear if, God forbid, he ever had to be entrusted with the presidency, whether he really has the mental capacity to handle it. I mean, this guy just isn’t bright. He’s never been bright. He isn’t bright. And people think, ‘Well, he just talks a little too much.’ Actually he’s just not very smart.”
Funny stuff, welcome to 2012.
Love the daily Caller piece. For our next lunch at Steakenburger, I'm getting the double, hold the lettuce!
"I think Vets should have an advantage in the job market as a thank you for their risk of life and limb protecting this country."
Jimbo, there is a lot of crap now about drones flying over America watching us, but people should be scared, cause they're looking for our enemies.
I remember the Achille Lauro hijacking. It was horrible what they did to the disabled Leon Klinghoffer and President Reagan wanted those terrorists, but he feared jihad. He'd been warned that one day, jihad would be a threat to America and the Republicans feared being responsible for a holy war from Islam. But look at Eric Holder. Apparently the Democrats hate the dreaded jihad even more than the Republicans.
I think it was the early 50's when the CIA wrote a report warning the President back then that Islam was becoming a threat to the Middle East stability.
So in 1952, the CIA, MI6 and the Muslim Brotherhood began trying to topple Egypt. It was a good plan, but it didn't work. There weren't enough Muslims back then, but there are now.
The Soviets went bankrupt and Islam, a former lesser evil, suddenly became the greater evil. They stepped up a notch.
The fact is that there is no such thing as peacetime. There is always someone that needs killin'. We gotta get them before they get us. It's the American way.
CJ, Chick-Fil-A donates to groups that share their values. I happen to agree with them on gay marriage and gays in general.
On the other hand Chick-Fil-A employes gays and serves gays so your claims that they espouse and promote intolerance and sometimes even hatred of certain people are groundless.
My beef with the phone company was not the fact they sponsored and supported all the other groups it's the fact they wouldn't support one group because it wasn't PC.
Jim, maybe you can tell CJ that life isn't fair and nobody owes you anything. It seems she hasn't learned that concept yet.
As far as mascot name go how about the Scottsdale Community College fighting artichokes?
What I said about groups that espouse & promote intolerance & sometimes even hatred of a certain people was referring to the what the GROUPS do, not Chick Fil. IOW, Chick A Fil just helps support those groups & that is THEIR CHOICE (remember?) having nothing at all to do with overt discrimination on the part of Chick Fil A. Learn how to read for comprehension, Mike.
Another thing, what you just said regarding the phone company refusing to support the cause of poor white men "because it wasn't PC" really, really, really sounds like your reasoning, sweetie. I mean, did you actually go to the people cutting those checks & demand equal charity just to be told, "NO, you guys are too white & male & that's just not cool..."?
Mike, Take your own advice about life not being fair & get over it already. You weren't even treated that poorly overall so I have no idea why you believe that you have some kind of right to whine about charity that you did not receive 20-some years ago now. That "Did you bring enough candy for everyone?" argument lost its power in elementary school too.
Even Middy admitted that I have an "interesting point". Now you should probably just let us grown ups debate this.
Now you should probably just let us grown ups debate this.
The proper response at this point is, 'yes ma'am.' I think she's cute how she makes those well rounded sentences and uses them for baseball bats.
I added to my food storage today. Folks in town are worried about rising food prices and they say to buy it while you can in the stores. What if there comes a time when it's too dangerous to go into town shopping? Other than Christmas sales in the Pekin mall.
Rick,
The fact is that there is no such thing as peacetime.
That pretty much says it all. There is always something going on.
I remember Klinghoffer and the Achille Lauro.
Mike,
No question about it; life isn't always fair. Especially today with all the PC crap we have to endure.
There are people getting jobs or schooling who aren't remotely qualified; they just happen to be the group of the month that the govt. thinks should get the advantages over others regardless of abilities.
That's why I believe so much in what Paul Ryan says: "We promise equal opportunity; not equal oitcomes."
Mike,
I did some radio and TV work in 1991-92 at SCC including broadcasting some baseball and basketball games along with 33 interview shows. We were the proud Artichokes!
I think they got that name after Vietnam when a bunch of vets went there and objected to the mascot thing and college life in general.
It was a fun couple of years. I still have some VCR tapes of my shows. I'd kill for that hair again!
When I lived in Pekin, there were times when I'd go to the river and just watch the boats. There was once a woman who came ashore to buy groceries in a small boat from their Bayliner parked out in the Illinois River. She said that her husband was a very successful freelance writer with health problems. I've corresponded and talked with so many writers since Pekin.
And it all started with a bunch of weird dreams, a rock star who advised me to study at a public library to 'smarten up,' and she came to hate my guts, but later said she loved me and how we're friends. But I don't believe her anymore.
SN almost had me convinced that I could return to journalism and that I am that good, but after everything that's happened, I think she lied to me for her own entertainment. Once again a joke, like I was to her in Pekin.
But occasionally I get a letter from a friend or a fan saying how they liked my writing. It's nice. But I never get one single word from the woman that I admire the most and that hurts and crushes my future.
get a wig... I guess some people are just not going to see things other than what they are programmed to see.
This might be the first season that I haven't watched any baseball whatsoever, I think MLB is finally morphed from America's pastime to meh..
dog days of summer- in your face.
I dearly love not paying my bills on time, then the account representative calls for payment and I have someone to talk to.
So then the woman asks the most astounding thing; would the public WANT to know the truth of what's really going on in our world? She believes that the public doesn't want or need to know the truth of what's actually going on.
So perhaps there is God giving me the answer from a stranger on the phone to stop fighting windmills. Get rich and famous, because I can. SN would tell me to make my parents proud and stop worrying about other people.
For a widowed writer, not paying my bills on time can be an enlightening experience.
"The fact is that there is no such thing as peacetime. There is always someone that needs killin'. We gotta get them before they get us. It's the American way."
I remember a couple stretches within my lifetime alone during which nobody needed "killin'" (at least not by our military) & I am positive that, if I go back in history before my time, I could find plenty more. In fact, I enlisted myself during one of those periods -- between Vietnam & the invasion of Kuwait -- isn't that when you would have served too, Rick? Probably a few years before I enlisted judging from what I know regarding your actual age but during a time of peace nonetheless.
LOL: that last idea was pretty good, Rick. If I ever do get into a position where bill collectors start calling, I will just pretend to be you & that should shut most of them right up.
Middy,
Now another loser ballplayer is caught on drugs (Cabrera). It is discouraging but since he isn't with the Reds who are having a great season I'll hang in with baseball a bit longer.
The game was better off before they started paying the idiot players millions so they could buy that crap. They are too stupid to know better.
The NBA is long gone from my interest. I used to love that league in the 60s when guys like Bill Russell, Wilt, Havlicek, Robertson, and my Cincy buddy Connie Dierking played.
I still like baseball but the season is waaaaaay too long at 6 months, then playoffs and World Series. Dopers will eventually drive me away from that too.
I remember when the players made about $8,000 a season and had winter jobs to get by. A lot more humility then.
Maybe Dem. Gov. Pat Quinn of Illinois went to the same blooper school as Biden.
Yesterday at a Union picnic he made this statement:
“Obama’s dead and the American auto industry is alive,” Quinn said before correcting himself to say “Osama bin Laden” is dead. “Guess I won’t use that one again.”
Another flash: A plaque is being erected in Chicago to mark the location of Barack's and Michelle's first kiss.
I'm sure the world will be rushing to see that. What a joke.
CJ, lighten up. I'm just having some fun with you. I didn't care that the phone company had no group for white guys. I was just pointing out the hypocrisy of companies that are PC.
You're right about Chick-Fil-A. they can donate to any group they want and if you disagree you're free to not go to that business.
What I don't like about PC crowd is the fact if don't agree with them you're labeled a racist or a bigot.
I can like or dislike anyone I want. It's not up to you or anyone else to decide how I should think.
Jim' college football starts in a few weeks. That's what I live for. I gave up on pro sports years ago.
Thunderstorms moving in and I live on top of a ridge that hasn't seen a storm for a while. The last time this happened a lightning strike blew strips of bark off an oak tree and shrapnel went for 30 feet!
I'm rebuilding the cellar to be completely of concrete block, except the dainty little house on top with the strong wooden floor and beams for the cellar's roof/house floor. The Love Shack! Off grid of course. The B52's and Love Shack!

Not much on that shooting incident at the Family Values headquarters.
It is interesting how much different the mainstream media who usually jump to conclusions and are quick to hysterically blame the tea party and other conservatives for anything they can dream up than mainstream conservative media?
Consider the viewpoint Mark Levin made yesterday.
He said flat out this nutjob has nothing to link with the gays and lesbians or their issues even tho he worked as a volunteer at their headquarters.
And then Mark went on to make the point that blaming others by association is just a cheap attempt to affix blame where it usually isn't.
Is't that a lot of the problem today?
We get pulled into these phony battles over issues like the Treyvon Martin incident where objectivity is the first casualty.
And the monster that conceived this and other acts of domestic terrorism is now demanding we give him another term?- he needs a term alright, a life term- sure justice with no possibility of pardon or parole which means the firing squad.
It could be an HBO pay for view and we could at least put a dent in that deficit he created- I would gladly pay.
If you ask me and I'm sure no one really is, the primary reason for the utter corruption we see all around us in politics is due to the socialist agenda of our mainstream press and media outlets, without them propping up and ignoring to the point of covering up and sacrificing their integrity for the communist bastard he would have never gotten elected in the first place.
time for a resurgence in the guillotine industry, wouldn't you think?
If I lived anywhere near Missouri I would have a storm shelter for sure.. and not just a ditch with a bathtub liner... an honest to goodness underground bunker.
smartest thing you have ever said.
When I lived in Pekin, I worked detassling corn with a lot of other kids. Everyone worked hard and we didn't mind the heat.
Now they have immigrants doing that work. It was good money when there wasn't anything else.
It's pouring rain. It's supposed to rain all night long. I think I said August 6 and that was about when rain started coming in and it began cooling down. Now it's raining. Everyone is expecting a bad, snowy winter, but everyone always expects that. However, everyone is expecting higher food prices.
Romney should drop out now. He seems like a nice guy, but we're gonna need God on our side. I have a feeling that whatever happens, was orchestrated to happen. Only the weather is unpredictable. Certainly not politics.
Here ya go, Jimmy. Present for ya. http://youtu.be/cXz1beJe78I
I can't believe that no one commented on Mitt Romney talking about the beauty of America in the video present that I gave Jimbo. I'll bet he thought it was me on the guitar again. Nope. Or maybe me in the geezer militia. Not likely. Nope, just Mitt.
Jim should get a photo of him and Romney together with his arm around the guy. Maybe Mitt giving a secret Mormon hand gesture.
Rick,
I love "Love Shack" and am a fan of the B-52s.
Middy,
The line of the year: "If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon."
Today he says it's incorrect that he is trying to divide America. How does this guy sleep at night saying lies like that?
Does he have no shame?
Rick, Your You Tube from 5:21 won't come on.
Great lesson I shamelessly stole off the internet...
.."One day a farmer's donkey fell down into a well..
The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.
Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be
covered up anyway; it just wasn't worth it to retrieve the donkey.
He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed
a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey
realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's
amazement he quieted down.
A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He
was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his
back, the donkey was doing something amazing.
He would shake it off and take a step up..
As the farmer's neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step
up.
Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well, and happily trotted off!
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to
getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of
our troubles is a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest wells
just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.
Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
Free your heart from hatred - Forgive.
Free your mind from worries - Most never happen..
Live simply and appreciate what you have.
Give more. Expect less
NOW .......Enough of that crap. The donkey later came back, and bit the
farmer who had tried to bury him. The gash from the bite got infected
and the farmer eventually died in agony from septic shock.
MORAL FROM TODAY'S LESSON:
When you try to cover your ass, it always comes back to bite you!"
