It sounds like you are starting to receive a bit of that as "the writer". Don't put a down payment on that tour bus yet though.

Middy,

I did a blog a few years ago about how much better baseball is on radio than on TV. We have a good example right here in Phoenix as the TV guys (Grace, Sutton) are a couple of doofuses who do about everything BUT give an intelligent broadcast of a game. They are just screw offs. Greg Schulte and Tom Candiotti do a good job on radio. I have tried watching TV with the sound off and listening to them but they have that damn 7 second delay so the picture and sound are not coordinated.

As a kid in 1950s Cincy, I could walk down about any street in town in the summer when the Reds were playing a day game and hear it coming from houses and yards. Everyone followed the Reds and announcer Waite Hoyt.

When I was stationed in central Missouri in the 60s I could still pick up the Reds at night as they broadcast over WLW, a 50,000 watter. I also listened to many Cardinal games with Harry Caray and Joe Garagiola. Harry was the greatest. He also did U of Missouri basketball.

My friend Allen sent me that Willie Nelson clip. Very interesting bit from 1965. He sure changed his act and became quite an icon.

CJ,

100 comments, pretty good considering I don't have the coverage of the Republic blogs. Those were supposed to disappear on 2-22 but they are still there. No one posts though.

You guys are really loyal and I appreciate it.Jim McAllisterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13973524943250404193noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19126167.post-81193207823793582412012-04-18T09:47:37.464-07:002012-04-18T09:47:37.464-07:00#100. I suppose it's why I like the theater ...Yeah... I suppose it's why I like the theater of the mind approach, the phenomenon probably goes a long way to explain why baseball is no longer the numero uno sport- we have a society that demands visuals and the tv is just full of visuals that drown out the competition.
Radio catered to a different approach to baseball, you can listen to a game while you do something else.
Being a then Red Sox fan in LA I used to be able to catch an occasional radio game or listen to Vin Sculley work his magic, radio football or hockey doesn't have the magic on a lazy summer day as baseball and Vin Sculley.
Nothing says Willie better than "Blue eyes cryin in the rain"- here ya go...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8b8I2_Ik3E
That clip with Willie is classic, it was the stage he was just trying to get noticed, he was nervous but obviously had the tools, later on in his career he began stylizing to the now familiar Willie chord transitions and vocal inflections recognized we now recognize as his signature-
He is a national treasure.
If the state troopers would just quit pulling his tour bus over and tossing it that would help... after all there isn't a judge in Texas that will convict him over a minor violation of the failed war on drugs.midnightsstaffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02422533404545233402noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19126167.post-52806109066486317812012-04-18T07:43:14.336-07:002012-04-18T07:43:14.336-07:00Jim, Barbara Eden is a very sweet and genuinely ni...Jim, Barbara Eden is a very sweet and genuinely nice person. I think that Barbara reaches out to her fans sometimes to help them. Now, about Libby Stubbs; I guess she used to play in a popular band years ago and now she's solo, but no rock star is going to make her popular. I've discovered that famous celebrities make it partly because of the corporations, but mostly because they draw an audience. Libby is on on Youtube and she plays for free in the markets and she's gaining followers in Australia. Jon Seppanen is another artist who is quickly climbing the ladder and he needs almost NO Help at all! Jon is a military veteran and has been in numerous battles! He's another guy who believes that music is healing. I've got to go to Dell Mack's studio today and drop off an amp for an electric guitar that I gave to a woman so she and her son don't have to share the acoustic. The boy plays a chord, then his mother has to play the same chord in a game of their own invention. It brings back that togetherness that is missing in an impoverished family. They may never be rock stars, but it gives them hope and helps organize their thinking to make a better world. People give me the strangest looks in the store now, since I'm "that writer." The Secret Service agents assigned to the White House are the best of the best of the best. Those are good people. And the White House Secret Service has always been nice to me, regardless of the political party. People have no idea how much stress those agents are under. Those are the same agents that guard Republicans and Democrats. Those guys are really nice in person. They're very down to earth good people in the Secret Service and what if the story is bogus? What if Columbia just wanted to embarrass the United States and set them up? What if someone wants rid of the toughest agents and replace them with those loyal to another? They're hard working, dedicated soldiers of the finest sort, Jim. But they ain't angels by a far sight. These are the people who might have to kill someone, then go home and look their kids in the eyes. People have no idea the stress those guys are under. But I'm biased. They've always been good to me because of Reagan, the Bush family and the Clintons. I just sent a note to Rolling Stone ...Wish me luck. I just sent a note to Rolling Stone magazine concerning Dell Mack. Okay, listen. It's 1951, Dell Mack drives his car at 14-years-old from Crocker Missouri to Bluff City Tennessee, now known as Memphis to get recorded. I think it may have been 1952, since that's the year that the Phillips brothers started Sun Records. The people that Delbert McKinnon learned music from are legends today. Dell said that his father told him before embarking on his adventure, "Play in tune and play in time," in an era without electronic tuners and the 440 tuning fork. Musicians would be 'homeless' under the bridges and that's where Dell Mack began his career and he learned from the black artists. Elvis learned from the black artists as did Dell, but most likely Presley had to use a fake name or be caught by his parents under the bridges. His mother was apparently very protective of the boy, who pestered Judd, brother of Sam Phillips, to get recorded. Dell Mack said the strangest thing he ever saw was Jerry Lee Lewis signing his name all over the walls in tiny little signatures between the holes. I'm not so interested in getting famous from these legends, but music journalism gives me peace.Rick Kepplenoreply@blogger.com
